Check Isle of Man Steam Packet’s Latest Sailings page and the text or email linked to your booking, then contact the operator before arranging replacement travel. Ask whether your booking qualifies for the next available sailing or a refund, and confirm any help with meals or accommodation before spending money. Refunds, rerouting, care and late-arrival compensation are separate rights with different conditions.
What to do first if your ferry is delayed or cancelled
- Check the latest status. Use the Steam Packet’s Latest Sailings information and check the messages and contact details supplied with your booking. Do not treat a weather forecast as confirmation of cancellation: the operator says decisions may be made close to departure to account for current conditions. It says passengers should be told of a cancellation or departure delay as soon as possible, and no later than 30 minutes after the scheduled departure. - Contact Steam Packet about your specific booking. Ask what the next available crossing is and whether you can rebook or request a refund. The operator says staff can help move passengers to the next available sailing, on the same day or another day. Find current contact details on the Steam Packet contact page; its disruption advice lists 01624 645745 for reservations, while the contact page also lists IOM.Reservations@steam-packet.com, UK phone 08722 992 992 and Isle of Man phone (01624) 661661. Listed opening hours are weekdays 08:30–18:00 and weekends 09:00–18:00. Contact details and hours can change, so verify them on the operator’s site.
- Ask what assistance is available while you wait. Steam Packet says it provides snacks, meals or refreshments free when facilities are reasonably available if departure is delayed by more than 90 minutes. If the disruption means you may need to stay overnight, ask the operator to arrange accommodation and explain what it will cover before you book your own.
- Protect onward plans. Notify hotels, car-hire companies, event organizers and onward transport providers as soon as you know your arrival may change. Steam Packet says it will try to advise about alternatives if you miss a connection, but it does not accept responsibility for additional onward transport costs. Check your travel-insurance policy for ferry disruption, accommodation and extra transport coverage.
- Keep evidence. Save your booking confirmation, operator notices, messages, receipts and correspondence. They may help when asking for a refund or compensation, dealing with insurance, or making a complaint.
Should you rebook or ask for a refund?
Compare the earliest realistic arrival on a replacement sailing with the value of continuing the trip. Consider whether the new crossing still works with onward connections, what refund applies to your ticket, and whether weather or another exception affects assistance. Ask Steam Packet which option applies to your booking before paying for replacement transport.
What Steam Packet says about refunds and rebooking
The operator says passengers booked on a cancelled sailing are entitled to a full refund. It also says that if a cancellation or departure delay exceeds 90 minutes and voids the reason for travel—for example, a day trip—the unused portion of the ticket can be fully refunded within 28 days on application. Where appropriate, it says it will provide a return service to the first point of departure. Its staff can also help rebook passengers onto the next available crossing. For journeys covered by the rules, GOV.UK says a cancellation or an expected departure delay exceeding 90 minutes gives passengers a choice: rerouting to the final destination at no extra cost, under comparable conditions and at the earliest opportunity, or reimbursement of the ticket price plus a free return to the first point of departure. The passenger-facing guide says refunds should be made within seven days using the original payment method. Coverage depends on the journey and circumstances; the rules have conditions and exceptions, so do not assume every booking is covered. What help is available while you wait?
Food and refreshments
Steam Packet’s published disruption advice says free snacks, meals or refreshments are provided when facilities are reasonably available if departure is delayed by more than 90 minutes. GOV.UK’s passenger guide describes light refreshments at 90 minutes, a snack or light meal at four hours, and a hot meal at eight hours, with the sequence restarting for each further four-hour period. It also says a carrier need not provide refreshments when facilities are unavailable. If you need food or have a dietary requirement, ask staff what is available at the port or onboard.
Overnight accommodation
Steam Packet says that when disruption not caused by weather or extraordinary circumstances requires an additional night, it will offer adequate accommodation free. Its published limit is €80 per passenger per night, or the sterling equivalent, for up to three nights; transport to the accommodation is excluded from that limit. Steam Packet disruption advice

GOV.UK’s statutory guidance instead describes adequate accommodation and transport to and from it, subject to a maximum of £70 per person per night for up to three nights. It says this assistance does not apply when weather conditions endanger safe ship operation; the passenger guide also describes a £70 nightly maximum and weather-related exceptions. Because the operator and government pages publish different limits and describe the details differently, ask Steam Packet what it will arrange and confirm the applicable passenger-rights guidance before incurring hotel costs. Can you claim compensation if the ferry arrives late?
Compensation for a late arrival is a separate issue from a refund for a cancelled sailing or a trip made unusable by delay. Steam Packet says eligible passengers must request compensation. Its published thresholds are based on the scheduled duration of the affected journey leg:

The 25% or 50% is calculated against the affected leg’s ticket price. The first two duration bands and the operator’s exceptions appear in Steam Packet’s disruption advice; the longer-duration bands are listed in GOV.UK’s passenger-rights guidance. The operator says its compensation provisions do not apply when delay is caused by weather or extraordinary circumstances. It also excludes stand-by passengers and open tickets without a reserved departure time from the listed assistance and compensation. Start by contacting the carrier. GOV.UK says complaints should first be sent to the carrier within two months of the date the service was, or should have been, performed. Steam Packet accepts service feedback by email and through onboard feedback forms. Its disruption page lists IOM.reservations@steam-packet.com for disruption enquiries and passenger.services@steam-packet.com for feedback; confirm the current route on the contact page.
