If your bank raises your loan EMI after an RBI repo-rate hike, first check your loan’s benchmark, spread and reset date, then ask for the calculation and a revised repayment schedule in writing. A repo-rate increase does not automatically change every loan payment immediately; the effect depends on your loan terms and when its interest rate resets.
Why a repo-rate hike may change your EMI—or not
The RBI repo rate is one possible benchmark for specified floating-rate loans. Some covered loans may instead use certain Treasury-bill yields published by FBIL, while loans linked to MCLR follow the reset terms in their agreements. For loans under the external-benchmark framework, the interest rate must reset at least once every three months; the cited RBI guidance sets a reset periodicity of one year or less for MCLR loans. Those intervals do not establish the exact date or amount of a change to your particular EMI.
Your loan’s benchmark, the spread added by the lender, the contractual reset date and the terms for adjusting repayments all matter. Check your agreement and the bank’s notice rather than assuming that the policy announcement itself explains a new payment. See the RBI directions on external benchmark-based lending and its MCLR directions.

- Confirm the rate type and benchmark. Check whether the rate is fixed or floating, and, if floating, whether it is repo-linked, linked to another external benchmark or tied to MCLR.
- Find the spread and reset clause. Note the spread, the date the revised rate takes effect, and the agreement’s rules for changing EMI or tenure.
- Ask the bank to show its calculation. Request a written explanation of the revised rate and payment, plus an updated repayment schedule. For covered EMI-based floating-rate personal loans, the lender must promptly communicate an increase in EMI or tenure under the RBI circular.
- Request a current loan statement. Ask for the outstanding principal, current rate and effective date, EMI, instalments remaining, proposed tenure, and any charges for switching or prepayment.
The RBI says quarterly statements for borrowers covered by its rules should show principal and interest recovered to date, the EMI, remaining EMIs and the annualised rate. Review those figures against the bank’s revised schedule. The RBI’s August 18, 2023 circular and its FAQ on floating-rate EMI loans describe these requirements.

Compare the repayment options available to you
For loans covered by the RBI circular, borrowers must be given options that include raising the EMI, extending the tenure, or combining both; part or full prepayment must also be available. At a rate reset, the lender must offer an option to switch to a fixed rate under its board-approved policy. That policy may limit how many times you can switch, and applicable switching or administrative charges must be disclosed.
| Option | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Increase the EMI | Whether the higher monthly payment fits your budget, and the remaining interest and fees shown in the bank’s schedule. |
| Extend the tenure | The resulting monthly payment, new repayment end date, and remaining interest and fees. |
| Combine a higher EMI with a longer tenure | The monthly payment and total remaining cost against each alternative. |
| Prepay part or all of the loan | The effect on principal and remaining cost, plus any applicable charges and the cash you need to retain for emergencies. |
| Switch to a fixed rate at reset | The fixed-rate terms, any limit on switching under the lender’s policy, and disclosed switching or administrative charges. |
Use the bank’s actual figures, not a generic EMI estimate. Compare monthly affordability, total remaining interest and fees, repayment period, rate certainty and exposure to future resets. A longer tenure can keep payments lower while extending repayment; a higher EMI can increase monthly pressure. Prepayment may reduce what remains to repay, but consider charges and preserve a suitable emergency reserve. No one option is best for every borrower.

Check whether the RBI protections apply to your loan
The August 18, 2023 circular concerns equated periodic instalment-based personal loans. The RBI FAQ says it applies whether a covered loan uses an external or internal benchmark, but it does not cover every loan product. Do not assume that every home loan—or every other type of loan—is automatically covered. Check your loan category, lender and contract; the FAQ discusses home loans as an example in connection with a class-wide reset, but that does not extend the circular to all home loans.
What to do if the figures or process seem wrong
- Compare the notice with your contract’s benchmark, spread and reset clause.
- Send the bank a written request for an explanation, corrected figures if needed, and an updated repayment schedule. Keep the notice and your correspondence.
- If your loan is covered and the lender has not provided a required communication or repayment option, raise the issue through that lender’s grievance process.
The applicable requirements depend on the loan’s scope and terms. The RBI materials cited here establish lender obligations but do not set out one complaint-escalation route that applies uniformly to every lender.
