First find out whether your account is closed, temporarily restricted, or affected only by a hold on one deposit. Those situations have different remedies. Contact the bank through a verified channel, ask what is blocked and why, protect essential payments, and keep a record of every notice and conversation. There is no universal deadline for a bank to release funds during a fraud or identity review.

What should you do first?

  1. Contact the bank safely. Use the number on the back of your card, a secure message in the bank’s app or website, or a branch. Do not rely on contact details in unsolicited texts, emails, or social posts. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) warns that impostors may pose as official contacts. Never post account numbers or identity documents publicly.
  2. Get the exact status. Ask whether the account is closed, temporarily restricted, under an identity or fraud review, or subject to a hold on a specific deposit. Ask what prompted the action, what is blocked, what amount is available, whether pending payments or deposits will be processed, what documents are needed, when the bank expects to review the case, how any remaining balance will be returned, and how to appeal or complain. Request the answers in writing.
  3. Protect incoming money and essential bills. List payroll and benefit deposits, rent, utilities, checks, subscriptions, and automatic debits. Contact employers, benefit administrators, and billers to redirect payments or arrange another method. Ask the bank what will happen to items already pending. Returned checks or automatic payments may lead to fees and other problems.
  4. Keep your records. Save notices, statements, deposit receipts, screenshots, and correspondence. Record the date and time of calls, the representative’s name, any case number, and what the bank said. If you see an unauthorized transaction, report it promptly and follow the bank’s dispute process.

These steps reflect CFPB guidance on account closures, deposit holds, and unauthorized electronic transfers. The bank’s stated status determines which path below is relevant.

If the bank closed your account

A bank or credit union can close a checking account without your permission. CFPB examples include writing bad checks, not having enough money to cover fees, and leaving an account dormant for a long time. Whether advance notice is required may depend on state law; do not assume the bank always has to warn you first. The CFPB states, “Yes, a bank or credit union can close your account without your permission” in an answer last reviewed August 30, 2024.

Request the final account details

Ask for the effective closure date, a final statement and transaction history, an itemized explanation of any fees or negative balance, and instructions for receiving any money left in the account. If you believe a transaction, fee, or balance is wrong, dispute it in writing and keep proof that you sent your dispute.

Check for payments that may still arrive or leave

Review pending checks, deposits, automatic payments, and fees. Contact the payers and billers affected, and ask the bank whether pending items will be paid, rejected, or returned. CFPB guidance warns that returned checks and automatic payments can cause additional fees and may make it harder to open another account.

If the bank says the account has a negative balance, ask how it calculated the amount and whether it has reported the balance to a checking-account reporting company. Address the balance promptly and save the bank’s response.

If the bank reopened an account you had closed

If you requested closure and the bank later reopened the account to process a debit or deposit, preserve proof of your closure request and records of the later activity. CFPB Circular 2023-02 says reopening an account in these circumstances can be an unfair practice under the Consumer Financial Protection Act. Raise the issue through the bank’s complaint channel and, if unresolved, consider a CFPB complaint.

If the bank froze access or is reviewing your account

Ask whether the restriction applies to the whole account or only certain transactions. For a fraud or identity review, use a verified bank channel, ask which identity or transaction documents are required, submit copies securely, and request a case number and a review date. The bank may not disclose every investigative detail. Available guidance does not establish a universal deadline for ending this kind of restriction, so do not rely on a promised release date unless the bank gives you one for your specific case.

If an electronic transfer was unauthorized, notify the bank as soon as possible and follow up in writing if requested. CFPB guidance says the bank generally has ten business days to investigate after receiving notice. Regulation E’s limits on consumer liability depend on circumstances such as whether an access device was involved and when you reported the problem; there is no single liability limit that applies to every case. Keep your report and the bank’s response.

If only a deposit is on hold

A hold on a particular deposit is not necessarily a freeze on the whole account. Availability depends on the deposit type, timing, and the institution’s policies, as well as circumstances that can permit a longer hold.

CFPB deposit-hold guidance, last reviewed August 28, 2026, says that cash deposited in person, certain smaller checks deposited in person, electronic payments, and specified official checks generally must be available by the next business day. The guidance also describes possible longer holds for situations such as a new account, repeated overdrafts, suspected fraud, an emergency, or a large check. Ask the bank which rule applies to your deposit and the specific date it expects the funds to be available. That ordinary deposit timetable does not establish when a separate account-wide restriction will end.

If a court order, garnishment, or levy caused the restriction

A legal restraint is different from a bank-initiated fraud review. Ask the bank for the issuing court or agency, the order or case number, the date it received the order, the amount restrained, any response deadline, the creditor’s identity, and instructions for claiming exemptions. Procedures and deadlines depend on the order and applicable state law, so contact the court, creditor, legal aid, or a lawyer promptly rather than relying on a general deadline.

Federal rules require a financial institution to review accounts receiving qualifying federal benefit payments by direct deposit and protect qualifying benefits deposited during the preceding two months. FDIC compliance materials describe notice information that includes the protected amount and the account holder’s ability to claim additional exemptions through the applicable local process. If more money is restrained than the protected amount, seek guidance promptly about asserting any further exemption.

Will a closed checking account hurt your credit?

A checking-account closure by itself usually does not appear on the three major traditional credit reports. However, specialty checking-account reporting companies collect banking history, and an unpaid negative balance or suspected fraud may be reported there. If a negative balance is sent to collections, the debt may also affect traditional credit reports.

If a bank denies your application based on a report, its adverse-action notice should identify the reporting company. Request a free copy of that report, check it for errors, and dispute inaccurate information with both the reporting company and the bank or other company that supplied it. CFPB guidance says most negative information on checking-account reports cannot be included after seven years, subject to the rules that apply.

How to open another account if you were denied

If you cannot qualify for a standard account, you can ask banks and credit unions whether they offer second-chance checking. These accounts are generally designed for people with banking-history problems and may have reduced services or different fees. Eligibility and terms vary, so compare the details before applying.

  • Monthly and transaction fees, plus any minimum opening deposit
  • Eligibility rules and how the institution treats a prior negative balance
  • Overdraft policy and whether overdraft coverage can be declined
  • Access to branches and ATMs, direct deposit, check writing, and bill pay
  • Whether account activity is reported to specialty checking-account reporting companies

How to escalate an unresolved problem

Start with the bank’s formal complaint channel and keep the case number and written response. The CFPB accepts complaints about checking and savings accounts and other banking services. If the issue involves a national bank and remains unresolved, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) identifies its Customer Assistance Group as a possible next contact. A credit union or state-chartered bank may have a different regulator, so identify the institution’s charter or regulator rather than assuming the OCC supervises it. A complaint may prompt a response, but it does not guarantee that access will be restored or funds returned.
