Stop wearing the watch, keep it away from more water, and do not charge it. Wipe only the outside with a soft, lint-free cloth, then arrange an inspection with Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. A cracked case or screen can mean the seal is no longer reliable, even if the watch still works.
Do not try to dry it with heat, compressed air or sprays, and do not probe openings or shake the watch. Apple warns: “Don’t use a damaged Apple Watch, such as one with a cracked screen or case, visible liquid intrusion, or a damaged band, as it may cause injury.”
First, make the watch safe
A crack and liquid exposure require different observations, but the safest first response is the same: remove the watch from your wrist and stop exposing it to water. Broken glass can cut skin, while liquid inside the case can create electrical and corrosion hazards. A damaged band also matters because it can let the watch fall or expose you to broken edges.

If the Apple Watch SE screen or case is cracked
Keep it out of every kind of water
A visible crack should be treated as a potentially compromised seal. Do not swim with it and do not wear it in the shower, bath, pool, sea, rain or while washing dishes. Water can enter through a damaged display or case even when the crack appears small and the screen responds normally.
Check for injury risks, not just display symptoms
Look at the glass without pressing on it. Sharp edges, a lifting display, gaps around the screen or a case that has separated are reasons to stop handling the watch except to move it to a safe, dry place. Do not tape over the crack and assume the seal is restored; tape can hide damage and leave adhesive around openings.
Do not assume normal operation means normal protection
The watch may continue to show notifications, record a workout or accept taps after an impact. Those functions do not prove that the gasket and adhesive are intact. Apple’s safety guidance covers a cracked screen or case as a damaged watch, regardless of whether it still turns on.

Dry only the exterior
Blot the case, screen and band with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid rubbing grit across a cracked display. Do not attempt to dry the inside with heat, forced air or chemicals; these methods can push liquid deeper, damage seals or affect components.

Do not charge a wet watch
Keep the charger disconnected until the watch has been inspected. A wet charging connection can increase the risk of electrical damage. If the watch was wet and also has a crack, visible liquid intrusion or a lifting screen, treat the situation as both a sealing and safety problem and seek professional service promptly.
Use Water Lock only for clearing a speaker on an otherwise intact watch
On Apple Watch Series 2 and later, including the SE family, Water Lock prevents accidental taps and can play tones that expel water from the speaker. To use it, open Control Centre, tap Water Lock, then press and hold the Digital Crown until the watch unlocks and plays the clearing tones.
Water Lock does not dry liquid inside the case, repair a cracked display, restore a damaged seal or make the watch waterproof. Do not use the feature as permission to swim with a cracked or recently liquid-damaged watch.
What Apple’s water-resistance rating really means
Apple describes Apple Watch as water-resistant, not waterproof. Apple Watch Series 2 and later have a 50-metre water-resistance rating under ISO 22810:2010. That number describes a tested condition; it is not a promise that a watch will remain safe after an impact, crack or years of wear.

Apple also states that water resistance is not permanent and can diminish over time. Drops and other impacts can affect it. So can soaps, solvents, lotions, sunscreen, oils and similar chemicals. A watch that was safe for a particular activity when new may not retain the same protection after those exposures.
For that reason, a visible crack changes the decision immediately: keep the watch away from pools, showers, baths and rain until it has been examined. The 50-metre rating cannot be used to calculate a safe swimming depth for a damaged watch.
How to arrange Apple or authorised service
Start with an inspection, not a promised screen-only repair
Apple’s Apple Watch service process requires an inspection before the final service option and fee are determined. Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider can provide an estimate. Service may be arranged in person or through a prepaid mail-in box, depending on the location and available service route.

An inspection is particularly important after liquid exposure. A display that appears to be the only damaged part can have corrosion or other internal damage that is not visible from the outside. Tell the technician about every event you know about: the impact, the type of liquid, how long the watch was wet and whether it was charged afterward.

Understand warranty and AppleCare coverage
Apple’s standard warranty does not cover accidental damage. An AppleCare plan may provide accidental-damage service, but fees and availability depend on the plan and region. Do not assume that a cracked screen qualifies for a free warranty repair.
Authorised providers can set their own service fees, and the final amount depends on the inspection. There is no single worldwide Apple Watch SE screen-repair price that applies to every model and country. Apple’s service-parts and service guarantee is 90 days or the remaining Apple warranty term, whichever is longer.
Have these details ready when requesting an estimate
- The exact Apple Watch SE generation.
- The case size: 40 mm or 44 mm.
- Your country or service region.
- Whether AppleCare coverage is active.
- Whether the watch has been exposed to fresh water, salt water, pool water, soap, lotion or another liquid.
- Whether the display is cracked, the case is bent, the screen is lifting or the watch shows signs of liquid intrusion.
These details help the service team identify the correct device and explain the available route. The provider’s estimate, rather than an online generic price, is the figure to compare with replacement cost.
Choosing between service, replacement and DIY repair
Use the following decision factors in order. Safety and sealing come before convenience or the lowest initial price.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
| Decision factor | What to evaluate | Why it changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Safety and sealing | Cracked glass, a separated case, a lifting display or suspected liquid inside | Professional inspection gives the best chance of identifying hidden liquid intrusion. Opening the watch yourself can further damage it and compromise water resistance. |
| Coverage and cost | AppleCare status, standard-warranty status, exact SE generation, case size, country and the provider’s inspection estimate | Accidental damage is generally outside the standard warranty. AppleCare fees and service availability are plan-specific. |
| Speed | In-person service, mail-in service and any replacement option available in your location | Local stock and regional service routes determine how quickly you receive a working watch; no single turnaround applies everywhere. |
| Device value | Compare the estimate with the cost of a replacement SE, especially for an older generation or liquid-damaged unit | A high repair estimate may make replacement more sensible than repairing a watch with uncertain internal condition. |
| Compatibility | SE generation and 40 mm or 44 mm case size | A display assembly must match both. A part for another generation or case size is not a safe substitute. |
When professional service is the sensible default
Choose Apple or an authorised provider when the watch was wet, the case is cracked, the screen is lifting, you need reliable water resistance, or you are not accustomed to opening small sealed electronics. Professional assessment also makes more sense when the watch contains important health or activity records and you cannot confidently diagnose whether the display is the only failed component.
When replacement may be better than repair
Compare the written service estimate with the price of a replacement Apple Watch SE that fits your needs. Replacement deserves more weight when the watch is an older generation, has both liquid and impact damage, has a damaged case or band in addition to the screen, or would require a service fee close to the value of another watch. Make that comparison only after you know the actual estimate; a generic screen price cannot account for hidden damage.

A dedicated iFixit guide covers Apple Watch SE screen replacement for a broken, cracked or defective display. The phrase Apple Watch SE replacement screen can describe a compatible display assembly, but compatibility must be checked against the SE generation and 40 mm or 44 mm case size before purchase.

The trade-offs are substantial
- Opening a sealed watch is delicate work and can cause cuts, additional component damage or damage to the battery and connectors.
- Separating the display and case can permanently remove the original water resistance, even if the new screen works.
- A replacement display does not prove that liquid damage elsewhere has been repaired.
- A watch opened for DIY service should not be treated as suitable for swimming unless a qualified service provider has verified its condition and sealing.
For most owners, especially after liquid exposure, professional service is the safer path. Reserve DIY work for an experienced repairer who accepts that the result may no longer be appropriate for water activities and who can work safely with a small, sealed device.
If you proceed despite the risks
Confirm the exact model and case size, use a repair guide intended for that generation, and work in a clean, well-lit area with the watch disconnected from power. Do not improvise with household blades, sprays or heat. Plan for the possibility that the watch will need further service if liquid intrusion, damaged connectors or a deformed case is found. Tools can help with disassembly; they cannot restore a compromised seal or make a wet watch safe.
Common situations and the appropriate response
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Small crack, watch appears dry and works normally | Stop wearing it in water, avoid charging if the damage is visible, and request an inspection. Normal operation does not confirm intact water resistance. |
| Watch was splashed but has no visible crack | Wipe the exterior, keep it off the charger while wet, and avoid heat, compressed air, sprays, probing and shaking. Water Lock can clear the speaker on an intact Series 2-or-later watch. |
| Cracked screen and liquid exposure | Do not wear or charge it. Dry the outside only and arrange professional assessment; hidden liquid damage may be present. |
| Screen is lifting or the case has separated | Stop handling it except to place it safely. Do not press the display back into place or seal it with household adhesive; seek service. |
| Band is damaged as well as the screen | Do not continue wearing it. Apple specifically includes a damaged band among conditions that can make use unsafe. |
Questions to settle before you approve a repair
- Is the quote for inspection, repair, replacement or another service outcome?
- Does the estimate account for liquid intrusion or only the visible display damage?
- What service guarantee applies, and is it 90 days or the remaining Apple warranty term, whichever is longer?
- Will the serviced watch be suitable for water exposure, and what does the provider actually guarantee?
- Would the same fee buy a newer or replacement SE that better fits your needs?
Ask these questions before authorizing work, particularly when the watch has been opened previously or has suffered both impact and liquid exposure. A display that lights up after repair is not, by itself, evidence that the case has regained its original resistance.
Bottom line for a cracked or wet Apple Watch SE
Keep the watch off your wrist and away from water, wipe external moisture with a lint-free cloth, and do not charge it while wet or visibly damaged. Apple’s 50-metre rating applies to tested water-resistant conditions, not to a watch with a compromised seal. Arrange an Apple or authorised-service inspection, then compare the estimate with the watch’s age, coverage and replacement value. DIY screen replacement is possible for experienced repairers, but it carries real injury, damage and permanent water-resistance risks.
