There is no single response for every infectious-disease exposure. What to do depends on the suspected infection, how and when the exposure happened, whether you have symptoms, your vaccination or immune status, your health risks, and local public-health guidance. Contact a healthcare professional or public-health authority promptly for advice specific to your situation. If you have severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, seek urgent medical care and tell them about the exposure.
What to do right away
- Get urgent help for severe symptoms. Call emergency services or go to urgent emergency care as appropriate. Explain what you think you were exposed to, how it happened, and when.
- Contact a healthcare professional or local public-health authority promptly. Do not wait for symptoms if the suspected exposure could have a time-sensitive preventive treatment. A clinician can assess whether you need testing, treatment, preventive medication, or specific precautions.
- Write down the details. Note the suspected disease or source, date and time, route of exposure, duration or intensity if known, and any symptoms. Include relevant vaccination or immune status and health conditions.
- Ask what to do next. Find out what symptoms to watch for, how long to monitor, whether testing is useful now or later, what precautions to take around other people, and whether vaccination or medication is indicated.
Do not take leftover prescription medicine or start post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) on your own. Whether an exposure qualifies for a preventive treatment, and which one is appropriate, requires clinical assessment.
If blood or body fluids were involved
Give first aid immediately
- For a puncture or cut, wash the area with soap and water.
- For a splash to the nose, mouth, or skin, flush with water.
- For an eye splash, irrigate with clean water, saline, or sterile irrigant.
CDC NIOSH advises people to report the incident and immediately seek medical care to determine the risk. If it happened at work, use your employer’s exposure-reporting or occupational-health channel as well as getting prompt clinical care. Healthcare-worker guidance calls for exposure evaluation, assessment of the source, testing and follow-up as needed, and prophylaxis or treatment when indicated.
Why timing and exposure type matter
Specific recommendations can differ substantially by pathogen and setting. These examples are not a universal schedule or a way to diagnose your risk; they show why it is important to name the suspected exposure when you contact a clinician.

| Exposure context | What the cited CDC guidance says | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Possible HIV exposure | CDC’s 2025 clinical PEP guidance calls for rapid assessment when care is sought within 72 hours. The 2025 nonoccupational recommendations say that, if nPEP is indicated, the first dose should be given as soon as possible and not delayed while the source’s HIV status is investigated. | Seek assessment promptly; these recommendations do not mean PEP is appropriate after every exposure or that it will be prescribed. |
| Hepatitis C after an occupational exposure | CDC’s 2020 guidance recommends baseline testing of an exposed healthcare worker as soon as possible, preferably within 48 hours. In cases where follow-up applies, it recommends HCV RNA testing at 3–6 weeks and later testing at 4–6 months. | These intervals concern occupationally exposed healthcare personnel, not every person with a possible HCV exposure. The cited guidance does not recommend HCV PEP. |
| Respiratory-virus exposure in healthcare personnel | CDC says antiviral PEP is generally not routine after these exposures, though it may be considered in certain circumstances, such as risk of severe disease or an outbreak. | This is healthcare-personnel guidance, not a blanket rule for the public. |
| Recent COVID-19 exposure | CDC says testing may help inform next steps, including reducing the chance of spreading infection and seeking treatment when someone is at risk of severe illness. | A COVID-19 test does not determine whether you were exposed to another infectious disease. |
For possible HIV exposure, do not wait for symptoms or for testing of the source before seeking care. CDC’s 2025 occupational HIV PEP guidance also emphasizes prompt reporting and starting PEP when indicated.
Testing, precautions, and follow-up are pathogen-specific
A test’s usefulness depends on the infection and when the test can detect it. A clinician or public-health authority can advise whether testing is useful immediately, should be repeated later, or is not indicated. The occupational HCV schedule above should not be applied to other infections or to the public in general.

Do not assume that every exposure requires isolation, work restrictions, a set monitoring period, or preventive medication. Ask what precautions apply to the particular infection and your setting, and follow current local public-health instructions. CDC’s COVID-19 guidance describes testing as one tool for deciding next steps; it does not make a COVID-19 test a general test for exposure to infection.

- What infection or source you suspect, and how certain that identification is.
- When the exposure happened and how long ago it occurred.
- How it happened: for example, respiratory contact, a blood or body-fluid splash, a needlestick, a bite, or potentially contaminated food or water.
- How long or intense the exposure was, if known, and whether symptoms have started.
- Your relevant vaccinations, immune status, health conditions, and any precautions already taken.
