If you tapped a suspicious banking link, stop interacting with it and contact your bank through its official app, website, or the number on your card or statement. Don’t use the link or phone number in the message. A tap alone does not prove your account or phone was compromised, but anything you entered should be treated as exposed.
What should I do first after tapping a suspicious bank link?
- Stop. Don’t reply, tap again, enter more information, download anything else, or call a number shown in the message.
- Contact your bank independently. Use the number on your card or statement, or open the bank’s official app or website yourself. Tell the bank you tapped a suspicious link, what information you entered, and whether anything downloaded or installed. Ask what protections it can apply; available controls vary by institution.
- Preserve the message. Keep it long enough to report it. Don’t forward it to other people or use its links to investigate.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says, “Banks and credit unions never ask for account information through email or text message.” Its guidance is to contact the institution using a phone number from another source.
What to do depends on what happened
If you tapped the link but entered nothing
Close the page and don’t interact with it further. Contact the bank if you are unsure whether the page submitted anything or if you see unusual account activity. A tap by itself does not establish that credentials were stolen or that malware was installed.

- Tell the bank exactly what you provided, including any one-time code, and ask it to secure the account.
- Change the bank password using the official app or website reached independently. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too.
- Turn on the bank’s available two-factor authentication. Never share a new verification code with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- Review recent account activity and report transactions or changes you did not authorize.
If you entered card or account information
Tell the bank which details you submitted and ask what steps it recommends for the affected card or account. Monitor activity and report unauthorized transactions promptly. The bank decides which protections are available for your account.

If you downloaded or installed something
This is also a device-security concern. The FTC recommends updating security software and running a scan. If you need help finding or removing suspicious software, seek trusted manufacturer or technical support. Don’t install a security app offered by the suspicious message or by an unsolicited caller.
If you sent money or see an unauthorized transaction
Contact the bank immediately and report what happened. If you paid by bank transfer or debit card, ask whether the payment can be reversed or refunded; recovery is not guaranteed. For a fraudulent wire transfer or account takeover, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) also directs victims to report to ic3.gov.

How to report the suspicious message or scam
- Suspicious text: Forward it to SPAM (7726).
- Phishing or scam: Report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Sensitive identity information exposed: Use IdentityTheft.gov for a response plan based on what was exposed.
- Fraudulent wire or account takeover: Contact your bank immediately; report the internet crime to IC3 as well.
These reporting routes are U.S.-specific. Outside the United States, use your bank’s official fraud channel and the relevant local consumer-protection or cybercrime service. Reach government sites by typing the address or using a trusted bookmark.

Watch for follow-up impersonation attempts
Scammers may follow up pretending to be your bank, a government agency, or technical support. Don’t share one-time codes or move money to a supposed “safe” account because of an unsolicited text or call. End the contact and verify the request using a trusted channel you find independently.
