If contamination is credible or an official notice has been issued, stop using the water for drinking, cooking, beverages, ice, and toothbrushing until the responsible authority tells you what is safe. Use bottled water or another source explicitly approved for the affected uses. Then find out whether your property is served by a public water system or a private well: the utility handles incident information for public water, while well owners should contact local or state health officials and arrange appropriate testing.
What to do first
- Use an approved alternate source for ingestion. Until you know what happened and what uses are safe, use bottled water or another source approved by the water utility or health department for drinking, cooking, making beverages or ice, and brushing teeth. The restrictions in an official notice take precedence over general advice. EPA customer guidance identifies three public-water advisory types with different restrictions.
- Identify your water source. Check a recent bill or ask your landlord or property manager whether the property is connected to a public water system or uses a private well. If you are unsure, contact the utility serving the address.
- Contact the responsible authority. For public water, call the utility even if it has not issued an advisory. For a private well, contact your local health department or state drinking-water program.
- Do not try to make unknown water safe with a generic home remedy. Boiling and household disinfection can address many disease-causing microorganisms, but they do not remove heavy metals, salts, and most other chemicals. EPA’s emergency disinfection guidance warns that boiling or disinfection will not destroy these contaminants.
Public water or private well: who to contact and what to expect
| Water source | Who to contact | How safety is assessed |
|---|---|---|
| Public water system | Call the water utility if you suspect contamination, including when no advisory has been issued. | Follow the utility’s incident-specific notice, restrictions, clearance updates, and any instructions to flush plumbing or appliances. EPA customer guidance. |
| Private well | Contact the local health department or state drinking-water program. | Arrange testing through a laboratory certified for drinking-water testing. Choose tests based on the suspected contaminant and local conditions, then follow health-official advice on treatment and retesting. EPA private-well guidance. |
For a spill or suspected release affecting a well or groundwater, ask local health or environmental officials which agency handles the incident. There is no single nationwide property-spill reporting route established in the guidance cited here.
How to follow a public-water advisory
Read the notice itself rather than assuming that every advisory means the same thing. Ask the utility whether the incident affects your address, which uses are restricted, and what conditions must be met before normal use resumes.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Notice type | What it means for household use |
|---|---|
| Boil Water | Follow the utility’s specified boiling directions for affected uses. Do not substitute a different treatment method unless the utility or health department approves it. |
| Do Not Drink | Use bottled water for drinking and other uses named in the notice. The notice may also restrict bathing or dishwashing. |
| Do Not Use | Use bottled water and do not use tap water for any purpose while the notice applies. |
These categories and precautions are described in EPA’s customer FAQ on water decontamination. A boil-water instruction should not be carried over to a suspected chemical incident: boiling does not remove most chemical contaminants, heavy metals, or salts.

How to arrange private-well testing
Private wells are not regulated by EPA in the same way as public water systems, and well owners are responsible for testing. EPA recommends testing annually for total coliform bacteria, nitrate, total dissolved solids, and pH. Arrange prompt testing if there is a known local groundwater or drinking-water problem, flooding, nearby land disturbance, construction or industrial activity, well repairs, or a change in the water’s odor, color, or taste. Use a laboratory certified to test drinking water; a local health department may offer testing. EPA’s private-well guidance.
Choose tests for the suspected source
A broad “test everything” approach is not a substitute for choosing a relevant panel. EPA gives the following examples to guide screening; they do not diagnose what is in any particular well:

| Clue or nearby activity | Contaminants EPA identifies as potentially relevant |
|---|---|
| Recurring gastrointestinal illness | Coliform bacteria |
| Intensive agriculture | Nitrate, nitrite, pesticides, and coliform bacteria |
| Nearby mining | Metals and pH |
| Gas drilling | Chloride, sodium, barium, and strontium |
| Fuel tanks, gas stations, landfills, factories, or dry cleaners | Volatile organic compounds and other contaminants identified for those potential sources |
Ask the laboratory which contaminants its panel covers, how to collect and transport the sample, and whether the report compares results with applicable health standards. Results should include contaminant concentrations and may indicate whether a national primary or secondary drinking-water standard is exceeded. If a result exceeds a health standard, contact public-health officials for contaminant-specific next steps and arrange confirmation testing. EPA guidance for private wells.
What to do after a flood or a confirmed well problem
If floodwater has reached a private well, contact state or local health officials. EPA directs well owners to disinfect and test the water after flooding, but the right response depends on the well and possible contaminants; do not treat generic disinfection advice as a substitute for instructions tailored to the situation. EPA emergency disinfection guidance.

Do not select a filter or treatment device until testing establishes what needs to be removed. EPA notes that some problems may be addressed with disinfection, distillation, or filtration, while others may require a new water source or well. Treatment depends on the contaminant, its concentration, and the well’s condition. Follow public-health advice and use a qualified water-treatment professional where appropriate. EPA private-well guidance.
How public-water cleanup and clearance work
For a confirmed public-system incident, EPA describes remediation in three phases. They may overlap, and some systems may need monitoring after service is restored. EPA’s overview of water remediation explains the phases:

- Characterization: identify the contaminant, its concentration and extent, and the risks.
- Decontamination: select treatment and, if needed, clean or replace affected infrastructure and manage resulting waste.
- Clearance: sample and review results against clearance goals.
There is no universal cleanup timetable. EPA says a utility incident can take hours to months or years when infrastructure replacement is needed. Let the utility provide the incident-specific status and clearance instructions rather than estimating safety from elapsed time.

An advisory being lifted does not necessarily mean every faucet, pipe, and connected appliance is ready for immediate use. Contaminated water may have entered home plumbing during the incident. The utility may direct residents to flush a service line, indoor plumbing, or connected appliances; instructions and flushing times vary with the property’s plumbing and outlets. Follow the utility’s directions for your address before resuming normal use. EPA customer guidance.

Keep a clear record of the incident
Save official notices and utility updates, note when you observed a change or learned of a spill, and record relevant nearby activity and any laboratory reports. Share those facts with the utility for public water, or with local health or environmental officials for a private well or suspected property or groundwater release. This helps the responsible authority assess the event and direct the next steps.
