If smoke may be coming from a neighbor’s home, move away from danger and call your local emergency number or fire department now. Do not go inside to investigate. If smoke or an alarm affects your own building, get outside by a safe route and stay outside; tell responders where the smoke is and whether anyone may be inside.
What to do first
- Move clear of smoke and heat. Do not approach visible flames or heavy smoke, and do not enter the neighbor’s home. If your own home or building is affected, leave by a route that is safe to use.
- Call emergency services. In the United States, call 911; elsewhere, use your local emergency number. Give the address, explain that you smell smoke and where it seems to be coming from, and tell the dispatcher if you know someone may be inside or trapped. Do not delay the call to confirm the source. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) advises people who are unsure whether it is safe to use an extinguisher to leave and call 911: Choosing and Using Fire Extinguishers.
- Warn others only if you can do so without entering danger. Do not re-enter a smoke-filled area or put yourself at risk to alert someone. Give responders any information you have about occupants.
- Stay outside until responders say it is safe. Do not go back in for people, pets, or belongings. Tell firefighters if anyone may remain inside.
If smoke affects your building
When you have a safe exit
Leave promptly, close the door behind you if you can, and use stairs in a multi-unit or high-rise building. Do not use an elevator unless firefighters direct you to. Go to the outside meeting place, stay there, and tell the fire department if anyone is trapped. Follow responders’ instructions if they differ from general guidance. See USFA’s Home Fire Escape Plans.

USFA says residents could have less than two minutes to escape a home fire once a smoke alarm sounds. This is general preparedness guidance, not a prediction of how much time anyone will have in a particular fire.
When smoke or heat blocks your route
Do not try to move through smoke or heat. Close the door between you and the fire, cover vents and cracks around it with cloth, call 911 or your fire department, and clearly report your location. Signal at a window with a light-colored cloth or flashlight. These steps follow USFA’s If You Cannot Escape From A Fire guidance.

Why smoke is an emergency
Smoke can be dangerous even when flames are not visible. USFA states that “Smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do” in its Learn About Fire guidance. Treat unexplained smoke as potentially serious rather than waiting to see whether it clears.
Prepare before there is smoke
Smoke alarms are for early warning and preparedness, not something to buy or install during an active emergency. USFA recommends alarms on every level of the home and inside and outside sleeping areas, interconnected so that when one sounds they all sound, and replacement ten years from manufacture. Its Smoke Alarms page was last reviewed May 9, 2023.
