Stop communicating with the person, do not send more information or money, and call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) if you think someone else may use your number. TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048. A disclosure does not prove that anyone has used your number, and it does not automatically put your benefits at risk. Medicare can review the situation, explain whether a number change is appropriate, and tell you how to report suspected misuse.
Do these things first
- End the contact. Hang up, stop replying to messages, and do not click links or send additional documents, account details, gift cards, or payments. Save the caller ID, phone number, email address, messages, and any paperwork before deleting or blocking the contact.
- Write down what happened. Record the date and time, how the person contacted you, the name or organization they claimed to represent, what information you disclosed, and any threats or promises they made. This is practical preparation for a report, not a Medicare-required form.
- Call Medicare through a number you obtained independently. Use 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), not a callback number supplied by the caller. Explain that you gave your Medicare Number to a person you now suspect was a scammer. Ask whether Medicare sees signs of misuse and whether the circumstances warrant a replacement number.
- Check your medical paperwork and claims. Look for services, supplies, diagnoses, prescriptions, or providers you do not recognize. Keep copies of anything questionable and mark the date you noticed it.
- Broaden the response if other data was exposed. If the person also received a Social Security number, bank or card details, an email password, an insurance login, or identity documents, contact each affected institution using a known official channel and follow the Federal Trade Commission’s identity-theft recovery guidance.
Medicare says, “If you think that someone else is using your Medicare Number, call us at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).” Calling does not mean you are asserting that fraud definitely occurred; it starts an appropriate review.
What to ask when you call Medicare
Tell the representative exactly what was disclosed and why the contact seemed fraudulent. For example, explain whether the caller demanded immediate payment, threatened to cancel benefits, claimed to need information for a new card, or contacted you unexpectedly. Ask the representative to:

The available Medicare guidance does not say that every disclosure automatically qualifies for a new number. Do not promise yourself that a number will be changed, and do not assume that requesting a card replacement changes the number. Medicare decides what action applies to the individual case.

If Medicare issues a replacement card or number, your coverage and benefits stay the same. If you are enrolled in Medicare Advantage, you continue using your plan’s member ID card for plan services even though Medicare handles the underlying beneficiary record.
Check whether the number was actually misused
Review statements and receipts
Compare every Medicare statement, explanation of benefits, and provider receipt with the care you actually received. Look for a clinic you have never visited, a date when you were elsewhere, duplicate services, equipment you did not order, or a diagnosis, medication, or treatment that is not yours. An unfamiliar provider name can sometimes be a billing company’s name, so investigate before concluding that a claim is fraudulent.
Use your secure Medicare account for Original Medicare claims
People with Original Medicare can sign in to a secure Medicare.gov account to see claims as they are processed. Medicare’s current sign-in choices include ID.me, CLEAR, and Login.gov. Medicare recommends an email address that is not shared with another person. Connecting an existing Medicare account to one of these identity services changes how you log in, so keep your new sign-in details secure.

If you cannot safely complete online identity verification or do not have a computer or smartphone, call Medicare for help instead of asking an unverified caller to create or access an account for you.
Allow time for legitimate claims to appear
A claim that is not yet visible is not proof that nothing happened; processing takes time. Continue checking statements as they arrive. Keep the originals or clear copies of disputed documents so you can compare later updates and show exactly what was incorrect.
What to do when a claim or medical record is wrong
Contact the provider first about the record
Call the provider’s billing or records department using a number from a statement, the provider’s established website, or another trusted source. State which service, diagnosis, medication, date, or charge is wrong and ask the provider to investigate and correct the record. Request written confirmation of the correction or the provider’s decision, and keep the name of the person who handled your call.

Notify your health insurer
Send the same information to your health insurer, including Medicare Advantage or Part D when applicable. Ask how the insurer wants disputed claims documented and whether it can place an alert on your file. If Medicare covers the service, call Medicare as well; a provider or private plan cannot substitute for Medicare’s own fraud-reporting channel.
Follow medical identity-theft recovery steps
The FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov medical identity-theft process advises reviewing medical records, reporting incorrect treatments, diagnoses, medications, and charges to the providers involved, notifying the health insurer, and calling Medicare when Medicare is your coverage. Medical identity theft means someone uses personal information without consent to commit Medicare fraud or another crime; a suspicious contact alone does not establish that this occurred.
If the scammer received more than your Medicare Number
The right response depends on the additional information. Medicare reporting addresses Medicare-related exposure, but it does not secure every other account.

Do not send a copy of your driver’s license, Social Security card, or bank statement to a person who says they need it to “fix” the original problem. Verify every follow-up contact independently.

Agency numbers, login methods, and online procedures can change. Check the relevant agency’s current page when you make a report, and never rely on a phone number or link supplied by the suspected scammer.

Your Medicare Number is unique to you and is different from your Social Security number. A lost or damaged card is a routine replacement-card issue; a number that may have been exposed or used is a separate question. Do not confuse the ability to print or order another card with an automatic change to the beneficiary number.

If Medicare sends a replacement-card letter, the official instruction is to securely destroy the old card and start using the new one. Coverage and benefits remain the same. Ask Medicare whether the replacement involves only a new physical card or a new number for your situation.
Recognize the warning signs of the original scam
Medicare says, “Medicare will never call you uninvited and ask you to give us personal or private information.” There are limited situations in which Medicare or a plan may contact a beneficiary, but an unexpected demand for your Medicare Number, payment, or immediate action is a reason to stop and verify.
- Hang up when a caller asks for information or money and threatens to cancel benefits, stop a payment, or send law enforcement.
- Call Medicare yourself rather than pressing a callback option or accepting a transfer from the caller.
- Do not let a caller remain on the line while you look for your card, sign in, or contact your bank.
- Do not “confirm” a number by reading back digits the caller already recited; that can validate information they obtained elsewhere.
Medicare’s practical rule is to share personal information only when you initiated the contact and permitted the follow-up. A legitimate representative should not object when you end an unsolicited call and dial the published number yourself.

Keep monitoring after you report
Continue reviewing Medicare statements, provider bills, and plan communications for unfamiliar activity. Respond promptly to a new discrepancy, even if you already reported an earlier one. Keep a single incident file containing your notes, claim numbers, correspondence, and the dates of every call. That record helps Medicare, a provider, an insurer, or an identity-theft specialist distinguish a corrected billing error from continuing unauthorized use.
The essential distinction is simple: sharing the number calls for a direct Medicare conversation and careful monitoring; an unfamiliar claim or record requires provider, insurer, Medicare, and FTC recovery actions; exposure of other credentials requires separate account protection. Taking those steps quickly limits confusion without assuming that misuse has already occurred.
