Stop communicating with the supposed recruiter, contact any bank or payment provider involved, secure exposed accounts, and report the scheme. Sharing information does not prove it has already been misused, but the right response depends on exactly what the scammer received: bank details, money, your Social Security number, an identity document, a password, or access to a device.
This guide is for people in the United States. Use your bank’s official app or the number on your card—not contact details in the suspicious message—and use the federal reporting and recovery services below.
Take these actions first
- End contact with the recruiter. Do not click more links, send additional documents, pay for equipment or training, or accept a promised reimbursement. Block the contact after saving the relevant messages. If you want to check whether the job exists, find the employer’s website and phone number independently rather than using details in the message.
- Call your bank or credit union immediately if banking information was exposed. Use the number printed on your card or the institution’s official app or website. Explain what you shared, review recent transactions and account changes, report anything unauthorized, and ask which protective steps it recommends.
- Contact the payment provider if you sent money. Call the card issuer, bank, wire-transfer company, payment app, or gift-card issuer involved. Give the transaction date, amount, recipient and any confirmation number, and ask whether the payment can be reversed or refunded. Recovery is not guaranteed, but speed improves the chance that the provider can act.
- Use the appropriate identity-theft route if you shared a Social Security number. If you know or suspect it has been misused, start at IdentityTheft.gov. If you do not know of misuse, follow the FTC’s exposed-information steps at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach.
- Change every exposed or reused password. Create a new, strong password for the affected service and for every other account where the old password was reused. Turn on two-factor authentication. If the scammer changed the password or recovery details, use the service’s official account-recovery process.
- Secure a device the scammer accessed. Update its security software, run a scan, remove detected problems, change passwords and enable two-factor authentication. If you need malware-removal help, contact the device maker or a trusted person—not an unsolicited “helper.”
- Report the job scam. Submit a report to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Save the listing, emails, texts, call details, documents and payment records so you can answer questions from your bank, payment provider or investigators.
These steps are protective measures, not proof that identity theft has occurred. Continue monitoring for unauthorized activity and respond to concrete warnings as they appear.

If bank or payment information was shared
Call through a trusted channel
Do not reply to the recruiter’s email or use a phone number in the job message. Use the number on your card, a statement, or the bank’s official app or website. Tell the representative whether you disclosed an account number, routing number, card number, online-banking login, one-time code or security answers. The distinction helps the institution choose the right response.

Review activity while you are on the call
Check recent transactions, pending transactions, new payees, transfers, address changes, phone-number changes and login alerts. Report each transaction you do not recognize. Ask the institution which protective measures are appropriate for the information exposed; it may explain how to replace a card, secure online access or monitor the account.
If you paid the scammer
Contact the provider that moved the money, even if the transaction appears complete. For a card payment, call the card issuer; for a bank transfer or wire, call the sending bank and the transfer service; for a payment app, use its official fraud process; for a gift card, contact the issuer and keep the card and receipt. Provide complete transaction details and ask whether a reversal, recall or refund request is available. A scammer may tell you to send another payment to unlock a refund; do not do so.
If you shared your Social Security number or identity documents
Choose the correct FTC path
If you know the number was used or you suspect misuse, IdentityTheft.gov can create an FTC Identity Theft Report and a personalized recovery plan. If the number was exposed but you have no evidence of use, the FTC directs you to IdentityTheft.gov/databreach for protective steps. The distinction matters: an exposed number deserves protection and monitoring, but exposure alone does not establish that someone has opened an account or filed a return.

Check for employment misuse
A stolen Social Security number can be used to obtain a job. Review your earnings and employment records through your my Social Security account. If the record contains an employer or wages that are not yours, contact the Social Security Administration and follow its instructions to correct the error.
The FTC also says an E-Verify account can lock a Social Security number against employment use. When an employer using E-Verify encounters a locked number, it must obtain additional information from the person attempting to use it. Treat this as one available protective option, not as a substitute for reviewing your records.
Recognize tax-identity warning signs
Tax misuse may first appear when an electronically filed return is rejected as a duplicate, or when the Internal Revenue Service sends a notice about earnings or a duplicate filing that you did not submit. Follow the instructions in the IRS notice. IdentityTheft.gov can produce an FTC Identity Theft Report, an IRS Identity Theft Affidavit and a recovery plan; the FTC says it can submit the affidavit to the IRS online if you choose.

If you gave the scammer a password or account access
Replace the password everywhere
Start with the account named in the message, then list every service where you used the same password or a similar variation. Change each one to a unique password. Do not reuse the new password on another site, and do not send a password or verification code to someone claiming to be support.

Turn on two-factor authentication
Use the account’s security settings to enable two-factor authentication. An authenticator app or security key can provide an additional barrier when available; text-message codes are still better than no second factor. Review recovery email addresses, phone numbers, active sessions and connected applications, and remove anything you do not recognize.
Recover an account you lost
If the scammer changed your password or recovery information, type the service’s address yourself or use its official app and select account recovery. Follow the provider’s identity checks. Warn contacts through another channel if messages were sent from the compromised account, and avoid links in unexpected password-reset messages.

If the scammer accessed your phone or computer
- Disconnect from the internet temporarily if remote control is still active or the device is behaving suspiciously.
- Remove remote-access software you did not install for a legitimate reason, then update the operating system, browser and security software.
- Run a full security scan and remove detected malware according to the security tool’s instructions.
- From a clean device when possible, change important passwords and enable two-factor authentication.
- Contact the device maker or a trusted technician if you cannot determine whether the device is clean. Do not accept help from a caller or message that appeared because you reported the scam.
Keep evidence before deleting suspicious files or messages. Screenshots, sender addresses, phone numbers, job postings, payment receipts and remote-support names can help your financial institution or investigators understand what happened.

A polished briefing, a virtual interview, a listing on a real job board or an employer logo does not authenticate the offer. The FTC warns that fake recruiters may request a driver’s license, Social Security number or bank details before a genuine interview or hire. Its consumer guidance states: “Scammy recruiters ask for your personal information up front.” The FTC also says, “Real employers won’t ask for that kind of information before they’ve actually interviewed and hired you.”

Verify the company using contact information you found independently and ask whether the advertised role and recruiter are real. Do not treat branding, urgency or a professional-looking email address as independent verification.

Report the incident and organize your records
File the report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Include the job title, company name used, recruiter’s details, dates, requested information, copies of messages and every payment record. Reporting does not guarantee reimbursement, but it gives the FTC information about patterns and creates a record you can refer to when dealing with a provider.
Keep a private incident log with the date and time of each call, the department contacted, case or confirmation numbers, promised follow-up and actions you completed. Store it securely; do not send the log or identity documents to an unsolicited person claiming to investigate your case.
Watch for recovery scams
After you report a job scam, another criminal may pose as a government employee, bank investigator, lawyer or “recovery specialist.” The FTC warns that these impostors may demand an upfront fee or ask for more personal and financial information in exchange for recovering money. An unexpected recovery contact is not proof that the person knows what happened. End the conversation and contact the bank, payment provider or agency through a number you locate independently.
When to get additional help
- Contact your bank, credit union or payment provider immediately for unauthorized transactions or exposed credentials.
- Follow the IRS or Social Security Administration instructions when you receive a notice or find incorrect earnings information.
- Use the affected service’s official recovery process for a hijacked account.
- Ask the device maker or a trusted technician for help when you cannot remove suspected malware.
- Consider an optional identity-monitoring service only after completing the free official steps; no paid product is required to report the scam, change passwords, contact a bank or use IdentityTheft.gov.
This guidance is specific to the United States. Readers elsewhere should contact their local bank, national identity-theft authority, tax agency and fraud-reporting service.
