If you shared fake news and discovered it was false, do not panic or argue. First verify the correction from a credible source, then correct the record promptly, acknowledge the mistake, and apologize to everyone who may have relied on your post. If you delete the original, leave a visible correction or acknowledgment when practical so people understand what changed.

“Fake news” is the familiar phrase, but UNESCO cautions that false content is not actually news. This guide uses the phrase readers recognize while focusing on false or misleading information, whether it was shared accidentally or without an intention to cause harm.

1. Pause before you post a second explanation

Your first task is to stop the error from spreading while you check what is true. Do not immediately share a screenshot, rebuttal, or alternative explanation simply because it agrees with what you now suspect. An incorrect correction can create a second falsehood and make the original harder to untangle.

Verify the original claim

Open the source behind the post and compare its claim with a credible, current source. Prefer an official agency, a reputable news organization with a corrections policy, a primary document, or a recognized fact-checking organization. Check the date, location, people involved, and whether the claim refers to a different event or jurisdiction.

UNESCO’s journalism guidance treats fact-checking and social-media verification as separate skills: verify the underlying evidence, not just whether several accounts repeat the same wording. A large number of identical posts can reflect copying rather than independent confirmation.

  • Read beyond the headline, image caption, or short video.
  • Check whether an old article or photograph is being presented as current.
  • Look for an original statement, dataset, court document, or agency notice where one exists.
  • Confirm that a correction itself has not been taken out of context.

If reliable sources disagree or the facts are still developing, say that uncertainty plainly rather than claiming a definitive answer. You can wait to publish until the essential point is established.

2. Correct the record clearly and quickly

Once you have verified the facts, publish a correction where the original audience can see it. PBS Standards describes its editorial practice as putting out correct information promptly, explaining what was wrong with the earlier post, and avoiding unnecessary repetition of the inaccuracy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lead with the accurate information

Put the correction first. Identify the earlier share briefly, then give the verified information and a credible source. Do not make readers repeat the false claim in order to reach the truth.

Correction: I shared an earlier post saying [brief identification of the claim]. That was wrong. The verified information is [accurate statement]. Source: [credible link]. I’m sorry for passing along the error.

The bracketed wording is a template: replace it with specific facts and a real source. If the false claim could cause immediate harm—such as a false emergency warning, dangerous health advice, or an accusation against a person—make the correction prominent and send it directly to people who may act on it.

Make the error unmistakable

Use words such as “wrong,” “false,” or “incorrect” when that is what your verification shows. A vague update such as “there may be more to this story” leaves readers unsure whether the original post still stands. Include the date or time if the facts changed during a developing event.

A prompt correction matters even if only a few people saw the original. PBS reports that 86 percent of respondents in a 2018 Gallup/Knight Foundation survey considered correcting errors quickly and openly “very important” to whether they trusted a news organization. That figure concerns news organizations, not a guarantee about personal relationships, but it illustrates why silence can damage credibility.

3. Decide whether to delete, edit, or preserve the original

There is no single universal rule because the right action depends on the platform, the audience, the harm, and your role. The eSafety Commissioner’s advice to a young person who accidentally shared false information is direct: delete the post and apologize. PBS’s newsroom standard says simply deleting an erroneous social post without a public record or acknowledgment is generally inappropriate in its editorial context.

These recommendations address different situations. Use the decision points below rather than treating either deletion or preservation as automatic.

Situation Practical response Why
The post is still spreading or could cause harm Remove or limit the original if the platform allows, then publish a visible correction and notify people who may have acted on it. Stopping further sharing reduces immediate risk, while the correction tells the audience what changed.
You can attach a correction, edit history, or reply to the original Use that feature, or leave a clearly connected correction before removing the post if removal is necessary. People who encounter the original link or screenshot can find the accurate information.
Your account is a newsroom, official organization, journalist, or high-reach channel Preserve an audit trail according to your editorial policy; record the original, correction, time, source, and who approved it. A publisher-like account has a stronger transparency and accountability obligation.
The share was a personal mistake with a small audience Delete it when appropriate, apologize, and send the correction to the same people or group. This follows the eSafety approach while ensuring recipients do not miss the update.

If you delete the post

Deleting can be sensible when the content is harmful, violates rules, exposes private information, or is likely to keep attracting shares. Before deletion, save a private record of what appeared, when you posted it, and what source you used, unless doing so would retain sensitive material you should not keep. Then add a correction or reply if the platform and circumstances make that possible. If no public record can remain, send the correction directly to the original audience.

If you leave the post visible

Do not leave a false post untouched while relying on a later correction that few people will see. Put the correction immediately above, below, or in a reply that is clearly connected to the original. If the platform offers an edit history, use it honestly; do not silently change a factual claim while pretending the original wording was never there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Apologize without making excuses

A short, direct apology is usually more useful than a long defense of how you were misled. The eSafety Commissioner specifically recommends deleting the post and apologizing for an accidental share. You can briefly explain how the mistake happened—such as trusting an outdated article or failing to check the source—but do not turn the explanation into blame or a reason the correction should be ignored.

I shared this earlier, but it was wrong. The verified information is [correction and source]. I’m sorry for passing it along.

Adapt the wording to your relationship and the seriousness of the error. If you sent the claim in a group chat, direct message, email, or private forum, correct it in that same place. People who never saw your public correction may still rely on the private message.

When the mistake affected someone directly

If the false post identified, accused, or embarrassed a person, contact them privately as well as correcting the public record. Remove identifying details where appropriate, avoid repeating the allegation, and follow the platform’s rules for harassment, privacy, or impersonation. A correction does not erase every consequence, so focus on stopping further distribution and repairing the relationship.

5. Avoid amplifying the false claim

UNESCO’s media-literacy guidance recommends countering misinformation without unnecessary amplification. A correction should contain enough of the original wording for readers to identify what you are correcting, but not so much that your correction becomes a new vehicle for the falsehood.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Lead with the accurate statement, not a sensational headline.
  • Use a short description rather than copying the entire false post.
  • Do not tag large numbers of people who never saw the original.
  • Avoid quote-posting a harmful image or video when a text description will identify it.
  • Do not encourage readers to “share this everywhere” unless there is a clear safety reason.

If the original content is already widely circulating, link to a reliable explainer that addresses it rather than embedding or screenshotting the misleading material. Consider whether your correction will reach a larger audience than the original; match its visibility to the people who need the information, not to the drama of the claim.

6. Report the content when reporting is appropriate

If the original item remains online and appears to violate platform rules or could harm people, use the service’s reporting function. The World Health Organization has advised reporting false or misleading content to the hosting platform in its public-health guidance. Its examples concern COVID-19, while the general principle applies more broadly.

Reporting does not replace your correction. Moderation may take time, and a platform may decide that content does not violate its rules. Use the current in-app help or safety center for the exact steps because menus, labels, and eligibility differ by service and can change.

  1. Stop sharing. Do not forward the claim, screenshots, or an unverified rebuttal while you investigate.
  2. Locate the original source. Note the publication date, author or issuing body, and the evidence it cites.
  3. Verify independently. Compare the claim with a current, credible source and check relevant location and time details.
  4. Assess the risk. Consider whether the post could affect health, safety, voting, money, employment, reputation, or someone’s privacy.
  5. Choose the handling method. Decide whether to delete, edit, reply, or preserve the post based on the platform and your audience.
  6. Publish the correction. State what was wrong, give the accurate information, and identify the earlier share as mistaken.
  7. Apologize. Keep the explanation brief and accept responsibility for passing it along.
  8. Reach the original audience. Correct group chats, direct messages, email recipients, and private communities as well as public followers.
  9. Report harmful content. Use the platform’s current reporting path when the original remains online or violates rules.

8. Common mistakes that make a correction worse

Deleting silently

A silent deletion can leave people who saw the post unsure whether it disappeared because it was false, because of a technical problem, or because someone objected. When feasible, pair removal with a correction or acknowledgment.

Arguing about intent

“I didn’t mean to mislead anyone” may be true, but intent does not make the information accurate. Misinformation commonly means false information shared without an intention to cause harm; terminology varies among organizations. Address the factual error first.

Overexplaining the falsehood

A long retelling can make the inaccurate claim more memorable. Give readers the minimum identification they need and spend the space on verified facts and what they should do next.

Using an unreliable fact-check

A correction based on another unverified post can compound the problem. Check the source’s evidence, date, expertise, and correction policy before relying on it.

Correcting only in public

If the original was sent privately, a public post may never reach the people most affected. Contact the same recipients directly, especially when they could make a decision based on the claim.

9. Prevent the next accidental share

Build a short verification pause into your normal posting routine. Before sharing, ask who created the content, what evidence supports it, when it was published, and whether a primary source confirms it. Reverse-image search or other verification methods can help with visuals, but a matching image does not prove that its caption is true.

For people who publish frequently or manage an organization’s account, write a correction policy in advance. Define who verifies breaking claims, where corrections appear, how deleted posts are logged, and how private recipients are notified. UNESCO’s Journalism, Fake News & Disinformation: Handbook for Journalism Education and Training is a 128-page 2018 resource with lessons on fact-checking and social-media verification; it is optional background reading, not a requirement for fixing one personal post.

Keep a list of dependable official sources for the subjects you commonly discuss. Subscribe to their alerts instead of relying on viral summaries. Most importantly, treat a pause as a normal part of sharing: speed is less valuable than giving your audience information you can defend.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. When the facts are still developing

Some claims cannot be settled immediately. In a developing emergency, election, court case, or public-health event, credible sources may update their information. If you have already shared an unconfirmed claim, say that verification is ongoing, remove or label the earlier post as unconfirmed, and publish a dated update when reliable facts emerge.

Do not convert uncertainty into certainty merely to appear decisive. A transparent statement such as “I cannot verify this claim; I will update when an official source confirms it” is safer than a confident correction built on incomplete evidence.

11. How to judge whether your correction worked

Success is not measured only by likes or replies. Check whether people who saw the original can find the correction and whether anyone acted on the false information. Respond to sincere questions with the same verified source, but avoid prolonged arguments that repeat the claim.

  • Was the correction posted where the original audience will encounter it?
  • Did you clearly identify the earlier information as wrong?
  • Did you provide a credible, current source?
  • Did you contact private recipients or people at direct risk?
  • Did you remove or report content that could continue causing harm?
  • Did you keep a record if your account has a publisher-like responsibility?

If new evidence changes the correction, date the update and explain what changed. That approach is more trustworthy than quietly replacing one unlabelled assertion with another.
