If a caller uses a familiar voice to claim a loved one has been kidnapped or is in danger and demands money, do not pay during the call. End or pause the conversation, then verify the person’s safety using a phone number or contact method you already trust. A convincing voice is not proof of identity: scammers can use a short audio clip and voice-cloning software to imitate someone.
What to do during the call
- Pause the demand. Do not send money, share financial details, or follow payment instructions while the story is unverified. If you can, hang up. If you do not feel comfortable ending the call, tell the caller you will call back.
- Verify the loved one independently. Call or message them using a number already saved or otherwise known to be correct—not a number the caller gives you. The FTC’s advice is direct: “Don’t trust the voice. Call the person who supposedly contacted you and verify the story.” (FTC, “Scammers use AI to enhance their family emergency schemes,” March 2023.)
- Bring in another trusted person if needed. If you cannot reach the supposed victim, contact another family member or friend who may be able to check. Do not let a demand for secrecy stop you from verifying the claim.
- Do not use the caller’s payment route. The FTC identifies pressure for immediate payment by wire transfer, cryptocurrency, payment app, or gift card as warning signs in family-emergency scams. Do not send money by any method the caller specifies while you are checking the story.
A scammer may sound convincing, know personal details, insist there is no time, or say the matter must remain secret. Those details do not independently establish that the caller is your loved one or that the claimed emergency is real.
How to verify without relying on the caller
Use contact information you already trust: a saved phone number, a previously used messaging account, or another established way to reach the person. If the person does not answer, try another independent route and ask someone else you trust to help check. Avoid calling a number supplied by the caller or relying on details the caller provides as proof.

If you remain on the call because hanging up feels unsafe, the FTC suggests asking a question only the real person would know the answer to, such as, “What kind of dog do you have?” (FTC, “Scammers Use Fake Emergencies To Steal Your Money,” September 27, 2023.) Treat an answer as one check, not a substitute for contacting the person through a known channel.

What if you already sent money?
- Contact the provider immediately. Call the bank, payment app, wire-transfer service, or gift-card company used. Explain that you believe the payment was fraudulent and ask whether it can be stopped or reversed.
- Report the suspected scam. In the United States, file a report with the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC also advises reporting it to your state attorney general.
Whether a payment can be recovered depends on the payment method, provider, and timing. A reversal is not guaranteed.
When the threat may be real
A suspicious or cloned voice does not prove that your loved one is safe. Verify promptly through an independent contact method. If, after checking, you have credible reason to believe someone faces immediate physical danger, contact the appropriate emergency service or local authority where you are. The right number and procedure depend on your location; U.S. consumer-fraud guidance does not establish a universal emergency number for every kidnapping threat.
