If you still have one of your PlayStation Network two-step verification (2SV) backup codes, use it at sign-in: choose Trouble Receiving Code?, then Sign In Using a Backup Code. Each account has 10 single-use codes. If the phone or mobile number is gone and you have no unused backup code, PlayStation’s documented recovery route is its Online Assistant, where you must verify your identity. You cannot display your backup codes online while locked out.
Choose the recovery route that matches what you still have
Your next step depends on whether any trusted sign-in method remains available. Use this decision table before changing SIM cards, reinstalling an authenticator app, or creating a new passkey.

Use a saved backup code first
A backup code is the fastest way around a lost 2SV phone. PlayStation provides 10 codes, and every code works only once. A code that was already used cannot be reused, so keep track of the remaining set as you work through recovery.

- At the PlayStation sign-in screen, enter your account credentials.
- When the two-step verification prompt appears, select Trouble Receiving Code?.
- Select Sign In Using a Backup Code.
- Enter one unused code and select Verify.
- Continue signing in, then update the 2SV method once you are inside the account.
Do not spend time looking for a separate online page that lists the codes. PlayStation states that a person who cannot sign in cannot check backup codes online. The codes must have been saved before the lockout, such as in a password manager, printed recovery record, or another secure location.

PS5 path
- Open Settings.
- Choose Users and Accounts.
- Open Account, then Sign In.
- At the 2SV screen, enter the saved backup code when prompted.
If the PS5 displays the standard 2SV prompt rather than a direct backup-code field, use Trouble Receiving Code? and then Sign In Using a Backup Code.
PS4 path
- Go to Settings and select Account Management.
- Choose Sign In.
- At the 2SV screen, press Triangle on the controller.
- Select Trouble Receiving Code?, choose the applicable reason, and select Sign In Using Backup Code.
- Enter an unused code and complete sign-in.
After a backup-code sign-in
A backup code gets you through the prompt; it does not repair the missing phone. Once signed in, deactivate 2SV and reactivate it with the new phone. Reactivating 2SV generates a fresh set of backup codes, including when most of the old codes have already been consumed. Save the new set before signing out.
Use another device that already has the verification method
A lost phone does not necessarily block you if the same verification method is registered on another device. For example, another device may still hold the registered authenticator method or another approved sign-in method. Use that device to sign in through its normal PlayStation flow.
Register a passkey while you still have access
- Sign in on the device that still has the registered verification method.
- Open the account-security controls and choose the option to register a new passkey.
- Finish the passkey enrollment on that device or the device where you want to use the passkey.
- Test the passkey sign-in before removing the old 2SV method.
PlayStation’s recovery guidance specifically describes this route for a lost phone: sign in using the device with the same verification method, then register a new passkey. A passkey is useful for future sign-ins, but registering one after the lockout is not an independent bypass; you need an already working sign-in method or account recovery first.

Troubleshoot a delayed verification code
If you still control the phone or mobile number but the message or authenticator code has not appeared, treat this as a delivery problem rather than an account-recovery case.
Check the 10-minute validity window
PlayStation says a verification code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt. If that period has passed, request a fresh code instead of repeatedly entering the expired one.
Use PlayStation’s delivery checks
- Select Resend Code once the option is available.
- Restart the phone.
- Confirm that airplane mode is off.
- Check that the phone has a usable mobile-network signal.
- Enter the newest code within its 10-minute validity period.
These checks apply only when the phone or number is still under your control. They do not restore access when the device and number are both gone.

If you cannot receive the 2SV prompt and have no unused backup code, PlayStation directs you to its Online Assistant to restore account access. PlayStation lists both “I don’t have backup codes” and “I don’t have access to my phone or mobile number” as situations that require contacting support.

What the support route does
- Open PlayStation Support’s Online Assistant.
- Explain that the 2SV phone or mobile number is unavailable and that you have no backup codes.
- Follow the assistant’s account-recovery prompts.
- Complete the identity verification requested by PlayStation.
- After access is restored, replace the 2SV method and create new backup codes.
PlayStation does not publish a universal response time or a single list of identity documents for every account and region. Do not rely on a promised turnaround or assume that one particular document will always be accepted; follow the instructions shown for your account and location.
Information to have ready
Use the account details you can accurately provide during the support conversation. The purpose of the process is to establish that you are the account owner. If the assistant cannot verify ownership, repeating the same sign-in attempt will not create a new recovery option; continue with the support instructions instead.
Why a replacement phone or SIM may not solve the lockout
Installing the same authenticator app on a replacement phone, obtaining a replacement SIM, or buying a hardware security key is not automatically a recovery method. Those options work only when the relevant verification method was already registered in a way that PlayStation can recognize, or after the account has been recovered and the new method is enrolled.

- Replacement SIM: can help only if it restores control of the exact mobile number receiving 2SV messages; it does not reveal saved backup codes.
- New phone: does not automatically inherit an authenticator registration that was stored on the lost device.
- New authenticator installation: is not proof of ownership unless the account’s existing registration can be transferred or you first regain access.
- Hardware security key: cannot be assumed to work unless that key was already registered to the PSN account.
- New passkey: must be registered from an existing authenticated session or after support restores the account.
These limitations are why PlayStation’s no-code, no-phone guidance points to identity verification through support rather than a self-service replacement.

Secure the account immediately after recovery
Replace the lost 2SV method
Once you can sign in, deactivate the old 2SV configuration and reactivate 2SV with the phone you will actually keep available. This removes the lost device’s role and gives you a current verification method.
Generate and protect a new code set
Reactivation produces a new set of 10 backup codes. Store them in a location you can reach without the phone used for 2SV. Because each code is single-use, mark or remove a code after using it and avoid relying on a screenshot that could disappear with the lost device.
Add a passkey
Register a passkey while you are authenticated. PlayStation identifies a passkey as the method to add when another device still has the same verification method, and it can provide another sign-in option in a future phone-loss situation. Enroll it on a device you control and test it before you disable any remaining method.
Confirm that recovery works
- Sign out of the device where you made the changes only after saving the new backup codes.
- Test the replacement 2SV method or passkey from a second sign-in screen.
- Keep at least one backup code separate from the phone and console used for everyday access.
Common situations and the correct next move
“I found one old code, but I am not sure whether it was used.”
Try it once at Trouble Receiving Code? > Sign In Using a Backup Code. If PlayStation rejects it, do not treat that rejection as evidence that the account is permanently lost; use another unused code if you have one. If none works and the phone is unavailable, move to the Online Assistant.

“I have the console, but not the phone.”
The console does not bypass 2SV by itself. On PS5, use the sign-in path under Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Sign In and provide a backup code. On PS4, use Settings > Account Management > Sign In, press Triangle at the 2SV screen, and choose the backup-code route. Without a code or another registered device, use support.
“I changed my phone number after losing the old one.”
A changed number becomes useful only after you regain access and enroll it as the new 2SV method. It does not let you view old backup codes or bypass the existing 2SV challenge while you are locked out.
“The code arrives after I already requested another one.”
Use the newest code and stay within the 10-minute validity period measured from the sign-in attempt. If delivery continues to fail, restart the phone, check airplane mode and signal, and use Resend Code. If you no longer control that number, stop troubleshooting delivery and contact support.
