If you have severe pain or unexpected symptoms after a hair transplant abroad, contact the operating clinic promptly. If you suspect a complication, symptoms are urgent or worsening, or the clinic cannot be reached, seek medical care where you are rather than waiting for a response from overseas. The CDC advises medical tourists not to delay care when they suspect a complication.
Get medical help promptly if something seems wrong
The NHS advises contacting the clinic where you had the transplant as soon as possible for severe pain or any unexpected symptoms. That does not mean you should wait for the clinic before seeking help: if you think a complication may be developing, or you cannot get timely advice, contact a local healthcare professional or urgent-care service. A clinician needs to assess your specific symptoms; this article cannot determine whether they are safe or diagnose their cause.
The NHS lists bleeding, infection and an allergic reaction to anaesthetic among possible hair-transplant risks. It also notes that a transplant may not take or may leave a noticeable scar. Tightness, aching, swelling and temporary scabbing can occur after surgery, but those general descriptions cannot establish whether an individual symptom is harmless.

When you contact the clinic, ask to speak with the clinician responsible for your procedure. Explain what has changed, when it began and whether it is getting better or worse. Ask how the clinic can arrange a clinical assessment and what follow-up is available. NHS guidance cautions that an overseas clinic may not provide follow-up, or may not provide it to the same standard as care in the UK.

A remote message or call may help coordinate care, but it should not replace prompt local assessment when symptoms seem urgent or are worsening. If you are in the UK, the NHS advises asking where follow-up will take place, what happens if complications require more surgery, how return travel would work and what it would cost. These are useful questions wherever you live, but the answers depend on the destination, clinic and your circumstances.
Give the local clinician a clear account of the procedure
Tell the clinician that you had a hair transplant abroad. Share the procedure date and destination, when symptoms began, what treatment you have received since, and the medicines you take. Bring or send your operative, discharge and follow-up records if available. The CDC recommends obtaining medical records in English and giving them to healthcare professionals who provide care after medical travel.

Ask the clinic for any missing records, including a clear account of who performed the procedure and what care was provided. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery warns that unlicensed personnel performing substantial medical aspects of hair-restoration surgery can put safety and outcomes at risk. That general warning does not establish the qualifications of any particular clinic or staff member; clear records help subsequent clinicians understand what was done.
Keep track of care, costs and communications
- Keep copies of the clinic’s contact details, medical records, prescriptions, receipts and messages.
- Contact your insurer and care provider directly to check whether follow-up, emergency treatment or additional travel is covered. Coverage depends on the actual policy terms.
- If you are in the UK, NHS guidance says travel insurance does not normally cover problems arising from surgery. Check your own policy rather than assuming this applies in the same way elsewhere.
- For UK readers, government guidance notes that the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office usually cannot assist with commercial disputes or costs related to planned medical treatment. Legal and regulatory routes vary by destination and by your home country.
The CDC cautions that follow-up and emergency care after medical tourism can be costly and may not be covered. Confirm practical arrangements with the insurer and provider instead of relying on assumptions about what a clinic or policy will pay.

Understand what broader medical-tourism warnings do—and do not—show
The CDC describes infection-related and noninfectious complications among medical tourists generally. Infection-control problems can expose patients to surgical-site or bloodstream infections and, in some settings, antimicrobial-resistant organisms; broader medical-tourism complications can also include blood clots and wound dehiscence. These are general risks, not evidence that a particular hair-transplant patient has one of them.
A CDC news release dated June 2, 2026 describes reports involving U.S. residents with infection or other complications after travel-related cosmetic procedures, including liposuction, abdominoplasty, breast augmentation and gluteal augmentation. It does not establish a hair-transplant-specific complication rate. The available evidence here supports no numerical estimate of the risk after hair transplantation abroad.
