If you find ash-like material in soil near your home, avoid disturbing it, keep children and pets away, and contact your local health or environmental department for advice. Its appearance alone cannot identify what it is or whether it is hazardous. The appropriate tests and cleanup steps depend on the material’s source, the property’s history, and local guidance.

What to do first

  1. Keep people and pets out of the affected patch. Dust, soil on hands, and accidental ingestion can create exposure. Do not let children play there.
  2. Leave the material undisturbed. Avoid digging, tilling, raking, dry sweeping, or otherwise stirring it up.
  3. Contact your local health or environmental department. Describe where the material is, how much you found, any nearby fire or ash-producing activity, and whether anyone may have contacted it. Ask whether qualified sampling is appropriate and which tests to request.
  4. Pause food gardening in that spot until local advice or test results support a plan. Do not spread suspected fire ash as fertilizer or soil conditioner.
  5. Ask before disposing of it. There is no single disposal rule for unidentified ash-like material; local requirements and accepted waste facilities vary.

Can you tell whether it is dangerous by looking?

No. Color and texture do not establish what the material is or whether it contains contaminants. Ash from burned structures may be more hazardous than ash from trees, shrubs, and other natural materials, according to the EPA. But an ash-like patch could have other sources, and its appearance cannot confirm any of them.

The EPA says the contaminants likely to be present depend on a property’s history and use. A generic garden soil test therefore should not be treated as proof that unknown ash is safe. The source and intended use of the area help determine what to test.

How to arrange useful soil testing

Ask local officials or a qualified environmental professional to recommend the analytes and sampling approach. A useful test plan should match the suspected source and answer the question you have about the site—for example, whether a particular patch is appropriate for gardening. Sampling locations and depths matter, so ask who should collect samples and how results will be interpreted against local criteria.

  • Quick, at home results for Soil pH, Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potash Innovative and inexpensive soil test kit features an easy-to-use capsule system and patented color comparators
  • Contains all components needed for 20 tests. 5 for each of pH, N, P and K
  • Contains all components needed to test all variables in several spots in the yard or garden
  • Simple, detailed instructions included. Great for beginners and experienced gardeners alike.
  • Soil pH preference list for over 450 plants included
  • For possible lead: EPA identifies laboratories accredited under its National Lead Laboratory Accreditation Program (NLLAP) as an option for soil lead analysis. Some local health departments may also offer soil lead testing. Confirm that a lab’s accreditation covers the analysis you need.
  • For an unknown source: Do not assume a lead-only test or any other standard panel covers every possible concern. The right panel cannot be specified without information about the source and site.
  • When comparing testing options: Check the lab’s relevant accreditation, whether the panel fits the suspected source, whether the sampling plan covers the locations and depths that matter, and whether local officials can interpret the results for your intended use.

Children and adults may be exposed to lead in contaminated soil through play or gardening, dust, or soil swallowed from hands or food. If someone has had significant contact or develops symptoms, wash exposed skin and hands and contact a health professional or local poison or public-health service.

What to do about gardens and outdoor use

Keep suspected fire ash out of vegetable beds and do not mix it into soil as an amendment. If contamination is a concern, wait for local advice or results before growing food in the affected spot. The EPA recommends testing soil used for food crops and taking measures to protect crops where lead contamination is a concern.

If local officials say the area may be affected but can still be used with precautions, covering bare soil or growing in raised beds or containers filled with clean soil can reduce contact. Those barriers do not remove contaminants from the underlying soil. Follow local advice on produce handling, including washing harvested produce.

If handling cannot be avoided

Ask local officials whether you should handle the material yourself at all. If handling is unavoidable, reduce dust, wear protective clothing, and use a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator that fits properly and is worn according to its instructions. CDC gives this respirator guidance for wildfire-ash cleanup; it does not establish that soil is safe or replace professional handling when that is warranted. Wash ash from skin promptly, and keep dusty shoes, clothes, and tools from tracking material into clean indoor areas.

Soil Test Kit 140 Tests (2026 Updated Instructions) – pH, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium & Ammonia – Garden, Lawn & Plant Soil Tester Kit for Accurate Fertility Analysis
  • Comprehensive Soil Analysis: Liquid soil test kits offer a comprehensive analysis of essential soil parameters, including pH, ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Having all these measurements in one kit provides a holistic understanding of the soil's fertility and health.
  • Customized Fertilizer Recommendations: With data on pH and nutrient levels, liquid soil test kits help users apply the right type and amount of fertilizers, optimizing plant growth, and preventing over-fertilization, which could harm both plants and the environment. Whether its for lawns, garden, grass, plants, vegetables, turf, flowers, compost trees vines ornamental landscape house plants or hydroponics you will be able to get the results you want.
  • Time and Cost-Effective: Liquid soil test kits are relatively quick and easy to use, saving time for gardeners and agricultural professionals. Compared to sending samples to a laboratory, these kits provide rapid results, allowing for prompt action. Additionally, they are cost-effective for routine testing, making it feasible to monitor soil health regularly.
  • Optimal Plant Health and Yield: By knowing the soil's pH and nutrient levels, gardeners and farmers can fine-tune their agricultural practices to create an environment conducive to optimal plant growth. Adequate levels of ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are essential for healthy plant development and higher crop yields.
  • Accurate and Precise Results: Liquid test kits are designed to provide accurate and precise measurements when used correctly. They are calibrated to detect specific nutrient levels, ensuring reliable data for informed decision-making in plant nutrition and soil management. You get a total of about 140 test. which is 40 test for each parameter and about 20 or so for nitrogen

CDC notes that wildfire ash can irritate the eyes, nose, or skin and may cause coughing and other health effects. Do not use a generic mask as a substitute for a NIOSH-approved respirator where one is recommended.

Why results from another property may not apply

Test results and cleanup thresholds are tied to specific sites, sampling plans, and intended uses. For example, the EPA’s 2026 Eaton Fire follow-up sampled 100 randomly selected properties in the Eaton Fire area in California, using 4,200 soil borings. Its May 19 release reported that 98 of the 100 sampled properties were below the federal lead screening level in subsurface soil and 95 of 100 were below it in surface soil. For those sampled properties, the reported median lead concentrations were 31 mg/kg in surface soil (0–1 inch) and 21 mg/kg in subsurface soil (6–7 inches), compared with the cited screening level of 200 mg/kg.

Those figures describe a particular cleanup and sampled properties, not soil near every home. A screening level is not a universal declaration that soil below it is safe for every person or use. Do not apply another property’s result or cleanup threshold automatically to your yard.
