If you think you have found a fossil, photograph it where it lies, note its location, leave it undisturbed, and report it to the authority responsible for that land. Do not pick it up, clean it, or try to confirm what it is yourself: its original position and surrounding context can matter as much as the object.
What to do first
- Stop before touching it. Do not pry, brush, clean, or move the object. If you can do so without trespassing or damaging the site, discourage others from disturbing it.
- Photograph it in place. Take a close photo and wider photos showing the surrounding area. If convenient, include an ordinary object such as a hand or water bottle for scale; a special ruler is not required.
- Record the location and date. Note the date and use a map or phone to save the location. GPS coordinates can be helpful. In Badlands National Park, the National Park Service (NPS) suggests using a trail map or phone to mark the spot; do not build a cairn, write on a formation, or otherwise mark the site physically. NPS Badlands Fossil Lab FAQ.
- Report it to the appropriate authority. Contact the land manager or local paleontology authority, share the location and photos, and follow its instructions.
- Ask before anything is collected or moved. Rules depend on the country, state or province, landowner, and land agency. Do not assume you may keep the specimen.
Who should you contact?
If the find is in a U.S. national park
Tell a park ranger and leave the fossil where you found it. NPS guidance for national parks says: “If you discover a fossil in a national park, take a photograph of it, mark its spot on a map or record its position with a GPS or smartphone, leave it where you found it, and tell a ranger.” National Park Service: About Fossils
If the find is in Utah
The Utah Geological Survey (UGS) encourages people to contact its State Paleontologist or paleontology staff about fossil discoveries. First establish which agency or owner manages the land: UGS describes different requirements for Bureau of Land Management land, Forest Service land, state trust lands, and private property. Its guidance says permission from the landowner is required to collect on private land. Confirm current rules with the relevant land manager and landowner before taking any action. British Columbia asks members of the public to report fossil discoveries to the BC Fossil Management Office, the Royal BC Museum, or a local museum. Its reporting form emphasizes recording where the fossil was found and photographing it in place. Government of British Columbia: Fossil Reporting

If you are somewhere else
Contact the authority that manages the land and ask which local or regional geological survey, museum, or paleontology office handles discoveries. The reporting route and collection rules are location-specific; the examples above are not universal legal guidance.
Why leaving it in place matters
A fossil’s position and the material around it can help establish its geological context. NPS describes fossils and fossil sites as nonrenewable resources, and British Columbia’s reporting process asks for an in-place photograph. Moving the object may remove information that cannot be recovered from the specimen alone.

Can you keep a fossil you find?
Do not assume that finding a fossil means you can collect or keep it. In U.S. national parks, NPS prohibits fossil collecting for recreational, commercial, or educational use; scientific collection requires a permit approved by the park. That rule applies to national parks, not automatically to every parcel of land in the United States. In Utah, requirements vary by land category, and private-land collection requires landowner permission under UGS guidance. Elsewhere, check with the responsible land manager before moving or collecting anything.
