Stop, give the snake room, and move away calmly. Do not touch, approach, catch, or kill it. Keep children and pets back; if someone is bitten, seek emergency medical care immediately.
What should you do when you encounter a snake?
- Stop and give it space. Do not approach to identify it, provoke it, or try to handle it. CDC advises that people keep pets away and slowly walk around a snake; the National Park Service also cautions visitors not to get close to identify or handle one. CDC wildlife safety guidance and National Park Service snake guidance explain these precautions.
- Move away calmly. Take a route that increases distance without stepping close to the snake. Avoid sudden attempts to scare it off or capture it.
- Keep others away. Call children and pets back, and do not let a pet investigate the snake.
Identifying the snake is not worth getting closer. If you can observe it from a safe distance, that may be useful to responders or clinicians later, but do not pursue it for a photo or attempt to handle it.
What if a snake is blocking a trail?
Stop at a safe distance and wait for the snake to cross completely. Do not step over it, walk close beside it, or try to make it move. The National Park Service’s Little River Canyon guidance says: “If a snake is blocking a trail, patiently wait for it to fully cross ahead of you before you walk by.” That advice is park-specific, but waiting rather than approaching is the prudent response to a trail obstruction.
What should you do if there is a snake in your yard or home?
If it is outdoors
Keep your distance and bring children and pets indoors or away from the area. Do not try to catch or kill the snake. If it leaves on its own, let it go. To make a yard less inviting, CDC recommends managing brush and log piles and reducing rodent attractants, since rodents can draw snakes.

How can you reduce the chance of an encounter?
- Before going outdoors, learn which venomous snakes occur in your area using local official wildlife resources. Do not approach a snake to identify it.
- On trails, stay on designated paths and keep hands and feet where you can see them.
- Keep pets leashed, and prevent them from putting their faces into logs, dense bushes, or other places you cannot see into.
- Around the home, manage brush and log piles and reduce rodent problems.
- For outdoor activities, CDC recommends carrying a first-aid kit. It is general preparedness, not snakebite treatment, and does not replace emergency medical care.
The guidance here is U.S.-oriented. Emergency numbers, wildlife rules, and animal-control services differ by location; check local official guidance for contacts and regulations.
