Downloading a fake GTA 6 file is not the same as running it. If you only downloaded the file and never opened it, delete it without launching it and scan as a precaution. If you ran or installed it, treat the Windows computer and accounts used on it as potentially compromised: stop logging in, scan the device, reset passwords from a different clean device, revoke active sessions, and review account security settings. An unfamiliar Android app needs a separate response using app removal and Google Play Protect.
Start with the risk state: downloaded, or executed?
The most important fact is whether the file or app actually ran. Malwarebytes documented a fake GTA 6 campaign in which an unofficial “Play Now” link delivered a Windows executable named gta6_installer.exe. Its analyzed sample was a Vidar information stealer, but the theft behavior depended on the executable running. A file that was downloaded and never opened is a different situation from one that was installed or executed.

I downloaded a fake GTA 6 build. What should I do?
If you did not open the file
- Do not double-click it, inspect it by launching it, or try a second download from another mirror.
- Use the normal file controls in Windows to delete the downloaded executable, archive or disk image. Emptying the Recycle Bin is sensible if you want the file removed from the computer.
- Do not return to the page, social-media post, torrent, chat or advertisement that supplied it. Fake pages can redirect you to additional downloads or ask for information.
- Run a scan anyway, particularly if you are not completely certain the file never ran. Microsoft documents both scanning an individual file and starting a quick scan in the Windows Security app under Virus & threat protection: Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance.
Deleting a file is a cleanup step, not proof that no process started and no other software was installed. If the download was an archive or ISO, check that you did not open it, mount it, or run an installer extracted from it.
What if I ran the GTA 6 installer?
Use the following order if you opened, executed or installed the purported game. Do not use the affected computer for banking, email recovery or other sensitive logins while you work through the response.

- Stop sensitive activity. Disconnect from websites that contain valuable accounts and avoid entering more passwords on the potentially affected Windows machine. If it is a work-managed computer, notify your IT or security team promptly.
- Scan with a trusted security product. Open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, and start a scan. Microsoft’s instructions cover a quick scan and how to scan a particular file. Allow detections to be quarantined or removed, and follow any restart request. A paid antivirus purchase is not a prerequisite for this first response; Windows includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus controls documented by Microsoft.
- Use a different, clean device for account recovery. Start with the primary email account because it can reset other accounts. Then address financial and payment services, identity-related accounts, and game accounts such as Steam or Epic if you used them in a browser on the affected computer.
- Change passwords and revoke sessions. Set a new, unique password for each important service. Then use that service’s account-security page to choose sign out everywhere, revoke active sessions or remove remembered devices. A password reset alone may not invalidate a stolen browser session token.
- Inspect account settings. Look for unfamiliar logged-in devices, recovery email addresses, phone numbers, authorized applications, API keys and email-forwarding rules. Remove anything you do not recognize. Enable two-factor authentication where the service offers it, preferably before continuing ordinary use.
- Monitor for follow-on abuse. Watch payment alerts, password-reset messages, new-device notices and sent-mail folders. Preserve suspicious emails and security logs if you may need your bank, employer, platform support or an incident-response professional to investigate.
Can a fake GTA 6 app steal my passwords?
In the specific Windows campaign analyzed by Malwarebytes, yes. Its sample was identified as the Vidar information stealer and was reported to target saved browser passwords, session cookies, browsing and download history, autofill information and FTP-client credentials. Malwarebytes observed targeting across 19 browser applications or profiles in that sample; that is a finding about the analyzed installer, not a claim that every fake GTA 6 file targets exactly 19 browsers. The reported executable was 1.1 MB, a campaign observation rather than a malware-size test or a minimum size for a real game.
Cookies matter because a stolen authenticated session can sometimes be reused without repeating the ordinary password-and-two-factor login sequence. That is why account recovery must include session revocation and review of account settings, not only a password change. There is no verified victim, infection or financial-loss count established for this campaign in the available reporting. The 19-browser figure and 1.1 MB file size should not be presented as prevalence statistics.
Is the Cyberleek app real?
The name alone does not establish what an app contains. The documented Windows sample and an Android app using the Cyberleek name should not be treated as the same malware without evidence. Avoid installing an app because it promises an unreleased game, a leaked build, an “extended look” or a special access code, especially when it is offered outside an official app store.

If you installed it on Android
- Uninstall the unfamiliar app through Android’s app settings. If Android refuses removal because the app has elevated privileges, first revoke any device-administrator or accessibility access it was granted, then uninstall it.
- Open Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, choose Play Protect, and run a scan. Google says Play Protect analyzes installed apps and can warn about or block certain high-risk installations that request sensitive permissions. Its current guidance is at Google Play Protect Help.
- From a separate trusted device, change every password typed into the app or its associated website. Revoke active sessions and remove unfamiliar devices in those services’ security settings.
- Review Android permissions, notification access, accessibility services, VPN settings and installed apps for anything you did not authorize. Keep monitoring the affected accounts for unusual activity.
These steps address an unfamiliar Android installation without asserting that it has the Windows installer’s Vidar behavior. If the phone shows persistent pop-ups, unauthorized transactions or unexplained account changes after removal, seek professional mobile-incident assistance.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Quick scan for a broad initial check, or use the scan options to scan a particular downloaded file or folder.
- Review the results and let Defender quarantine or remove detected threats. Restart when prompted, then run another scan if the product requests it.
A clean result is useful evidence, but it cannot tell you whether a password or session cookie was copied before detection. Complete the account-protection steps whenever the installer actually ran, even if the scan finds nothing.
When is a full reimage or professional help justified?
Do not automatically wipe every computer that merely downloaded a file. Reimaging is a higher-severity recovery measure that erases the system and reinstalls the operating system; it is not a universal requirement for an unopened download.

- Disconnect and escalate if the computer shows continuing suspicious activity, repeated detections, unknown remote-control software, disabled security tools, unexplained administrator accounts or signs of ransomware.
- Prefer a complete reimage when a trusted security professional or your organization’s security team cannot establish that the system is clean after execution, especially if the machine contained sensitive work or financial data.
- Protect evidence first on a work or legal matter. Do not wipe a managed device before consulting the responsible IT or incident-response team, because logs and disk evidence may be needed.
TechRadar’s September 10, 2026 report summarized Huntress findings about fake GTA 6 ISO packages that included remote-access trojans, infostealers and ransomware, and reported guidance to disconnect and completely reimage infected systems in that context: TechRadar’s report on fake GTA 6 malware. Those findings concern the analyzed ISO campaign and should not be merged with Malwarebytes’ separate Vidar-installer analysis.
How to avoid another fake build
Verify release information on Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page rather than trusting a download page, influencer post or “leak.” At the time of the cited Malwarebytes report, Rockstar had not announced a GTA VI demo or PC version. The official page currently lists a November 19, 2026 release and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms; availability and platform details can change, so check the page again before acting: Rockstar Games: Grand Theft Auto VI.
- Do not disable Windows security warnings to make an unofficial installer run.
- Do not enter an email password, payment-card number or recovery code into a “beta access” or “verification” page promising a leaked build.
- Be suspicious of tiny installers, password-protected archives, ISO files and sideloaded mobile packages presented as a complete unreleased game. File size by itself does not prove malware, and a large file is not automatically safe.
- Keep game launchers, browsers and operating systems updated, and obtain software from the publisher or the platform’s official distribution channel.
What not to do after a suspected infection
- Do not continue logging into accounts on the affected computer just to test whether the game works.
- Do not assume that changing one email password protects every service if browser sessions remain active.
- Do not reuse a password from the compromised machine on the clean device.
- Do not install multiple random “cleaner” programs advertised by pop-ups; they can add another unwanted download and complicate the investigation.
- Do not buy a console accessory, security key or other product expecting it to remove malware or revoke stolen sessions. The built-in Windows and Android security controls provide the relevant first actions.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The strongest documented claim is narrow: Malwarebytes analyzed one fake GTA 6 Windows installer and identified Vidar behavior targeting browser and FTP credentials, cookies and related data. A separate report covered different fake ISO packages with several malware categories. Neither report proves that every file using GTA 6 or Cyberleek branding is identical, and neither supplies a verified total victim count. Match your response to what actually happened on your device: download-only, executed Windows file, or installed Android app.
