If you changed your AT&T password and can no longer sign in, first type the AT&T ID and new password manually, check capitalization, and confirm you are using the ID for the correct account. Then replace the old saved password in your browser, phone, tablet, mail app, or other devices. If the new credentials still fail, use AT&T’s password-reset process, complete any extra passcode check, and update AT&T Mail credentials. Stop retrying a locked email account; AT&T recommends waiting an hour or resetting the password. Call 800.288.2020 if recovery options are unavailable or unsuccessful.
Start with the five-minute credential check
Most sign-in failures immediately after a password change come from an old autofill entry, a capitalization mistake, or using a different AT&T ID than the one tied to the account. Work through these checks before changing the password again.
- Open the AT&T sign-in page or app and clear the fields. Do not select a suggested password or saved username.
- Type the AT&T ID manually. Check every character, including periods, numbers, and the domain of an email-style ID.
- Type the new password manually. AT&T passwords are case-sensitive. Make sure Caps Lock is off and that your keyboard has not switched layouts. AT&T’s sign-in FAQ states: “Are passwords case-sensitive? Yes. Enter uppercase and lowercase letters carefully. Check that Caps Lock is off when you are typing a password for signing in.”
- Confirm the account. A customer can have more than one AT&T ID for separate wireless, internet, television, or legacy services. The ID shown in an app may belong to another account.
- Try one clean sign-in. If it works, continue by updating saved credentials everywhere else. If it fails, do not repeatedly guess; move to the reset procedure below.
AT&T’s password support page summarizes the first step this way: “Type in your AT&T ID and password manually to avoid auto-fill errors.”
Find the failure point before taking the next action

Update every place that stored the old password
Changing a password on AT&T’s website does not rewrite copies held by your devices. A browser may autofill the old value; a mail client may continue submitting it in the background; and a phone or tablet can keep retrying it until the account is temporarily blocked.

Browsers
- Delete the obsolete AT&T password entry from the browser’s password manager.
- Sign in once by typing the new password, then save the replacement only when the browser offers to do so.
- If the browser fills an old AT&T ID, remove that username too and enter the correct one.
Phones, tablets, and computers
- Open each device’s account or password settings and replace the AT&T credential.
- Check applications that connect to AT&T services, including billing, wireless management, and email.
- Restart the device after updating the credential so a stuck sign-in session is discarded.
Password managers
Edit the existing AT&T record rather than creating several similarly named entries. Verify the username and the password in the manager before pasting them into the sign-in form. A manager can preserve a typo just as easily as it can preserve a correct password.
Reset the password when the new one still fails
Use AT&T’s official “Change or Reset Your Sign-in Password” flow when a manually entered password is rejected. The recovery process asks for the AT&T ID and the last name associated with it, then presents the verification methods available for that account.
- Open the AT&T sign-in help or password-reset option.
- Enter the AT&T ID and the associated last name exactly as AT&T has them recorded.
- Choose an offered verification method, such as a text message or email, and complete the identity check.
- Enter a new password twice when prompted. Do not reuse the value that just failed.
- Sign in manually in a private or otherwise clean browser window to confirm the reset.
- Return to your other browsers, devices, and apps and replace their stored credentials.
Where AT&T offers it, you may receive a temporary password by text or email. Use that temporary value to sign in, then create a permanent password when AT&T prompts you. A temporary password is not a substitute for updating the saved credentials on your devices.

Meet AT&T’s password rules without making the password weaker
AT&T lists a sign-in password length of 8–24 characters (AT&T service rule, 2026). It can contain uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and these listed special characters: +, =, #, ?, *, $, !, underscore, and hyphen.
- Avoid names, birthdays, addresses, phone numbers, and other personal details that someone could guess.
- Avoid obvious sequences such as consecutive numbers or repeated characters.
- Stay within the 8–24-character limit while choosing a long, unique phrase or a randomly generated value.
- If the reset form rejects a password, check its length and allowed characters rather than removing security features or choosing a predictable phrase.
Complete an additional security or wireless passcode check
Some AT&T accounts require a second passcode after the main password. This is separate from the sign-in password. Use the code-delivery method shown on the sign-in screen and enter the current code before it expires.
If you can sign in but need to replace a wireless passcode, AT&T’s sign-in FAQ directs you to the security settings and the “Get new passcode” option. If you cannot sign in at all, finish account recovery first; changing the wireless passcode is not a way around a failed password reset.

When AT&T Mail or Currently.com is involved
AT&T and AT&T Mail can use the same AT&T ID and password. That shared credential also applies when the mailbox is accessed through Currently.com. A password change that fixes the main AT&T account therefore requires an update in every email client using that mailbox.
Update mail applications
- Open the account settings in your mail app.
- Replace the saved password for the AT&T mailbox with the new one.
- Save the setting and send a test message to confirm authentication.
- Repeat on desktop mail software, phones, tablets, and any other device that checks the mailbox.
If the web mailbox accepts the new password but a mail app repeatedly reports an error, remove the account from the app and add it again only after confirming the correct AT&T ID. Repeated background retries with an old password can trigger a lock.
What to do when an AT&T email account is locked
After too many unsuccessful attempts, AT&T Mail may display a protection notice such as: “For your protection, your account was locked.” Stop entering passwords while the lock is active. AT&T’s email guidance lists two immediate options:

- Wait one hour, then try once with the correct ID and password.
- Reset the password through AT&T’s recovery flow instead of continuing to guess.
If AT&T indicates that the account is inactive, or if you suspect someone else attempted access, follow the security and support instructions shown during recovery. Change the password only through AT&T’s official sign-in and recovery pages, and review which devices and mail apps still contain the old credential.

If the AT&T app will not respond or will not accept a known-good password
- Force-close the app and restart the device.
- Remove old AT&T IDs saved in the app, then enter the current ID manually.
- Check the app store for the latest AT&T app version and install it.
- Retry the sign-in. If the app remains unresponsive, uninstall and reinstall it, then sign in again.
These steps address local app data; they do not repair an incorrect password. Confirm the credentials in a browser before concluding that the account itself is unavailable.

- Try a different, up-to-date browser.
- Clear the affected browser’s cookies and cache for the AT&T mail site.
- Make sure JavaScript is enabled.
- Temporarily disable extensions that modify pages, scripts, privacy controls, or sign-in forms.
- Enter the ID and password manually rather than accepting autofill.
If a clean browser session works, the account credentials are valid and the original browser profile needs correction. If every browser fails after a reset, return to account recovery rather than repeatedly changing local settings.

Know when to contact AT&T
Escalate when you cannot receive a recovery code, no verification method is offered, the reset process ends without restoring access, or a correct password fails after the account has been unlocked. AT&T lists 800.288.2020 for customers who lack a password-recovery option or continue to have sign-in trouble.
Before calling, have the affected AT&T ID, the service or mailbox you are trying to reach, the approximate time of the password change, and the exact error message available. Do not read a full password or one-time verification code aloud unless AT&T’s authenticated support process explicitly requires a secure entry method.
Prevent the next password-change lockout
- After changing the password, update the browser manager, phone, tablet, computer, and mail apps before opening them repeatedly.
- Keep a single, clearly labeled AT&T entry in your password manager and remove obsolete duplicates.
- Record which AT&T ID belongs to each service if your household has multiple IDs.
- Check that recovery email addresses and phone numbers remain accessible before you need them.
- When a sign-in fails unexpectedly, stop after a careful manual attempt and use recovery rather than guessing.
AT&T’s password and sign-in support pages were listed as updated April 3 and April 10, 2026; its app troubleshooting page was updated July 13, 2026, and its email troubleshooting page March 24, 2026. Recovery methods and support details can change, so follow the current instructions displayed by AT&T when you perform these steps.
