If sports betting is affecting your finances, mood, relationships, work, or daily routine, stop the current session and put distance between yourself and the next bet. You do not need a diagnosis—or proof that things are “bad enough”—to ask for help. Start by protecting essential money, telling someone you trust, and contacting a gambling support service. If you may harm yourself or cannot stay safe, seek urgent local mental health or emergency help now.
What should I do right now if I feel out of control?
- Stop the session. Close the betting app or website, leave the betting shop, and avoid trying to win back losses. Chasing losses can deepen the financial and emotional harm.
- Make the next bet harder to place. Use an operator’s self-exclusion option, install blocking software, and ask your bank whether it offers a gambling transaction block. These are barriers, not a complete treatment plan. The UK Gambling Commission explains how self-exclusion works; check the current terms and coverage of any scheme.
- Ask someone you trust for practical help. You could ask them to sit with you while you block access or help protect money needed for bills. This is an option, not a substitute for specialist support. GamCare’s FAQ for people experiencing harm describes ways to create distance from gambling.
How can I tell whether betting is causing harm?
Warning signs can include betting more money or for longer than you intended, thinking about betting much of the time, difficulty stopping, increasing stakes to get the same feeling, chasing losses, borrowing or selling things to gamble, or hiding how much time or money you spend. You may also notice anxiety, mood changes, sleep problems, missed bills, or withdrawal from friends, family, or work. These are reasons to seek support, not a diagnosis. See GamCare’s signs of gambling harm.
The NHS has a self-assessment that asks about affordability, chasing losses, borrowing or selling items, stress, financial problems, and guilt. Its scoring guidance says a score of 8 or higher suggests gambling-related harms are likely; a score of 1–7 may still indicate a negative impact. It is a screening aid, not a diagnosis or a test you must pass before getting help. Read the NHS guidance on help for problems with gambling.

How do I protect bills and deal with debt?
Treat betting as a financial risk, not a way to earn money or recover losses. GamCare puts it plainly: “Gambling should never be viewed as a way to make money or overcome financial difficulties.”

Which barriers can help me stop betting?
Choose barriers based on where you bet and what access you need to interrupt. Availability, coverage, and duration vary; check the current rules directly with the relevant provider or scheme.
Rank #2
| Barrier | What it can block | Coverage and geography |
|---|---|---|
| Self-exclusion with an operator | Access to that operator’s betting services | One operator; available terms depend on the operator and location. |
| Multi-operator self-exclusion | Access across participating operators, rather than just one | The Gambling Commission describes schemes including GAMSTOP ONLINE for online operators. Check scheme coverage and current terms. |
| Blocking software | Access to gambling websites or apps on devices where the software is installed | Coverage depends on the software and setup; it is not a substitute for support. |
| Bank gambling transaction block | Eligible gambling transactions on the account or card | Ask your bank what it blocks and how to activate it; availability and scope vary by bank. |
For UK options and formal self-exclusion information, consult the Gambling Commission’s self-exclusion guidance. The Commission describes self-exclusion as a tool for people who have recognised that gambling is harmful to them.

In the UK, the NHS lists the National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare, at 0808 8020 133. The NHS says it is free and available 24/7; GamCare describes its support as free and confidential. Contact details and opening arrangements can change, so check the NHS page or GamCare’s FAQ for current information.

The NHS also describes gambling treatment clinics in England. The services and contact details on that page are not a directory for every country. If you are outside the UK, look for a local public health service, gambling-harm support organization, and debt-advice service. GamCare’s recovery resources are available through its self-help and recovery toolkit page.

If you may harm yourself, feel unable to stay safe, or face an immediate emergency, contact emergency services or the urgent mental health service where you are. Do not wait for a gambling helpline to respond, and do not treat it as a replacement for emergency care. In England, the NHS gambling page directs people whose mental health is seriously affected to urgent mental health help; NICE’s guidance on gambling-related harms covers identification, assessment, and management.
