If Sony denied your PS5 warranty claim, first ask for the specific reason, the warranty term Sony relied on, and any inspection evidence supporting the decision—in writing. Then compare that explanation with the warranty for the country where you bought the console and gather your purchase and repair records. A Sony warranty denial does not automatically settle whether you have a separate claim against the retailer under local consumer law.
1. Get Sony’s reason and the warranty clause in writing
Ask Sony to identify the exact reason for the denial, the provision of the applicable warranty it relied on, and any inspection finding or photo supporting its conclusion. Request a case or reference number and ask whether Sony will review the decision. Sony’s published warranty terms describe coverage and service conditions; they do not promise a formal appeal process or a guaranteed escalation ladder.
Keep the request concise and factual. If Sony gives only a general explanation, ask what specific condition it found and how that condition relates to the fault you reported.

Sony’s US and Canada warranty terms require a valid, dated bill of sale or retailer receipt for warranty service: Sony PS5 warranty terms for the United States and Canada. That requirement should not be assumed to describe every country’s process.
3. Check the terms that actually apply
Use the warranty issued for the country where the PS5 was purchased, not a warranty page for another region. Check the purchase date, whether the claimant is the original purchaser, the covered fault, and the exact exclusion Sony cited. Sony warranty terms differ by jurisdiction.

United States and Canada
Sony’s published US and Canada warranty covers the original purchaser for one year from the original purchase date for defects in materials and workmanship, subject to its terms. The policy lists exclusions that include specified misuse or accidental damage, alteration or removal of the serial number, certain unauthorized service or opening, and some damage caused by unlicensed peripherals. The policy is valid only in the United States and Canada; it cannot be generalized to other regions. See Sony’s US and Canada PS5 warranty.

Sony’s published EEA commercial guarantee is additional to statutory consumer rights and provides a one-year manufacturer guarantee in the territories listed, subject to its terms and proof-of-purchase requirements. A denial under that guarantee does not by itself decide whether a separate claim against the seller is available. Check Sony’s EEA guarantee terms for the applicable territory.

Find the country-specific Sony warranty and official consumer guidance for the place of purchase and your residence. Do not apply US, Canadian, or EU terms by analogy; local coverage, deadlines, and remedies may differ.
4. Respond to the reason Sony gave
Address the factual basis of the denial directly, using dated records where possible. Ask Sony to explain the evidence behind its finding if the explanation does not show how it reached that conclusion.

- Impact or liquid damage: Provide relevant dated photos, video, or repair evidence. Ask what inspection finding supports the conclusion.
- Purchase date or ownership: Send the dated invoice or receipt and, if needed, the order confirmation or seller record.
- Unauthorized repair or modification: Ask what specific evidence Sony found and whether it believes the work caused the fault being claimed.
Do not assume an exclusion is automatically invalid or that Sony’s conclusion is necessarily correct. The facts, the applicable warranty, and local law matter.
5. Ask for a case review, but do not assume one is guaranteed
Send Sony a single, organized submission with the denial, your evidence, and a short explanation of what you believe the records show. Ask a supervisor or case reviewer to reconsider the decision and request Sony’s written final position. Treat this as a reasonable request, not an entitlement: the published sources do not establish a guaranteed escalation process or that escalation will change the outcome.

6. Consider a separate claim against the seller
A manufacturer’s commercial warranty and a seller’s statutory responsibilities are different routes. If you bought the console in the EU, Sony’s legal-guarantee guidance says to report non-conformity to the seller. Depending on the facts and applicable national rules, remedies may include free repair or replacement, and in some cases a price reduction or reimbursement. The European Commission describes a minimum two-year legal guarantee in the EU, with national implementation varying. This is a seller-focused legal guarantee, not a universal two-year Sony manufacturer warranty. See Sony’s EU legal-guarantee information and the European Commission’s guidance on guarantees and returns.
For US consumers, the Federal Trade Commission advises contacting a state consumer-protection office or a lawyer about possible implied-warranty coverage. The FTC’s July 2024 statement that warning letters put companies on notice about repair restrictions concerned general right-to-repair concerns; it is not a ruling on any particular Sony denial. For EU cases, Your Europe and the relevant national consumer body can explain local implementation. In other countries, use the official local consumer-protection authority. Without the country, purchase location, retailer, and denial reason, a specific legal deadline or complaint route cannot be stated responsibly. See the FTC’s warranty guidance and Your Europe consumer guidance.
7. Protect the console, your evidence, and your data
Before opening the console or sending it to a third-party repairer, check the precise denial basis, the applicable warranty, and local law. Sony’s US and Canada terms exclude certain damage connected to unauthorized service or opening; that wording is not a universal rule for every warranty. Preserve the console’s condition and records while the dispute is unresolved. Before authorized service, back up what you can and remove private materials: Sony warns that service may change settings or cause data loss.
