If someone uses your voice in an AI deepfake, save evidence first, report the content to the platform hosting it, and verify any urgent request for money or information through a trusted channel. If the deepfake is part of a suspected scam, report it to the appropriate U.S. authorities as well. A report may prompt review, but it does not guarantee that content will be removed or money recovered.
1. Save evidence before reporting
Record what you found while it is still available. Keep the original files where possible, and note when and where you found each item. Do not put yourself at risk or access accounts or systems without authorization to collect evidence.
- The post or media URL, account or channel name, and handle.
- The date you found it and, if visible, the date it was posted.
- Screenshots and a copy of the audio or video, if lawful and safe to retain.
- Related messages, email addresses, phone numbers, payment demands, and links or accounts the content directs people to.
The FBI advises people reporting incidents involving synthetic content to retain identifying information and materials such as usernames, email addresses, websites or platform names, photos, and videos. See the FBI guidance on synthetic content.

Use the platform’s own reporting process. Depending on the service and the circumstances, the relevant option may be privacy, impersonation, or synthetic-media reporting. These processes are separate from reporting a scam or crime to authorities, and their outcomes are not guaranteed.

YouTube: privacy complaint for realistic synthetic content
YouTube lets a person request review of realistic AI-altered or synthetic content that looks or sounds like them through its privacy complaint process. YouTube says the person must be uniquely identifiable and that voice may be considered identifying information. Its review can take account of whether viewers are told the content is synthetic, how realistic it is, whether it is parody or satire, and whether it has public-interest value, among other context. YouTube: channel impersonation report
If the copied voice is used to make a channel appear as though you own or authorized it, YouTube’s impersonation policy may also apply. YouTube says unauthorized AI copying of a person’s voice or likeness that falsely implies channel ownership or authorization can violate that policy. Reporting an impersonating channel is distinct from submitting a privacy complaint about a particular video; choose the route that fits what is happening, and consider both when appropriate. These are YouTube-specific procedures, not universal rules for other platforms. Check the host’s current help center for its available reporting categories and requirements.
3. If the voice is being used to trick people, verify before acting
Treat requests delivered by a familiar-sounding voice as unverified if they ask for money, passwords, one-time verification codes, or personal information. Call the person using a number you already know is theirs, or contact them through a previously confirmed channel. If they cannot be reached, check with a trusted mutual contact. Do not rely on a phone number or link supplied in the suspicious message.

The FBI warns that cloned voices can sound nearly identical to a real person’s voice and recommends independently verifying requests. The FTC also advises calling a purported relative or friend at a known number. See the FBI’s guidance on voice-cloning scams and the FTC’s family-emergency scam guidance.
If you think one of your accounts may have been accessed, go to the service’s official recovery or security page independently—not through a message link. Change compromised passwords and enable multifactor authentication where available. Malicious links and social engineering can be used to steal credentials or authentication codes, so do not share a code with a caller or message sender.

4. Report suspected scams or internet-enabled crime in the United States
Government reports serve different purposes from a platform takedown request. You can use the relevant route in addition to reporting the content to its host.

- Suspected scam: Submit a report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Suspected internet-enabled crime: File a report with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The FBI also provides field office contact information.
Include the saved URLs, account identifiers, messages, and other relevant materials. Reporting an incident does not itself ensure that content will be removed or funds recovered. These agencies and routes are U.S.-oriented; options elsewhere depend on your country.

5. Treat AI-voice detector results as clues, not proof
A detection tool’s result cannot establish by itself that a recording is genuine or synthetic. In an April 2024 analysis, the FTC described a range of effectiveness among real-time detection approaches and cautioned that techniques for evaluating existing audio may become less effective as cloning advances. It concluded that there is no single solution to voice-cloning harms. See the FTC’s analysis of voice-cloning harms.
Do not let a detector result delay preserving evidence, reporting harmful content, or independently verifying a request for money or sensitive information.
What removal and legal action can—and cannot—be assumed
Platforms assess reports under their own policies and may weigh identifiability, context, disclosure, realism, parody, satire, and public interest. Some synthetic content may be protected expression, and legal rights depend on the jurisdiction and circumstances. There is no universal guarantee that a platform will remove a particular post or that an authority will investigate it; the FBI says it may investigate when the associated facts indicate potential federal criminal violations.
