If someone claiming to be ICE or another immigration authority is threatening you, do not pay or share personal information under pressure. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. For a suspicious call, text, or email, stop responding, save the evidence if safe, and verify any claim using contact details you find independently on an official agency website—not a number or link the person sent you.

What to do right now

  1. Get to safety. If someone is threatening immediate harm, trying to force entry, or you otherwise face an emergency, call 911 when you can. ICE’s tip form also directs people with emergencies to 911: ICE Tip Form.
  2. End suspicious contact. Do not pay, share financial or identity information, click links, or keep replying because the person is pressuring or frightening you. The FTC advises hanging up on unsolicited callers demanding money or sensitive details and not responding or paying in threat scams: FTC: Scammers impersonate US immigration officers and FTC: Threatening phone scams are targeting parents and immigrants.
  3. Do not rely on what appears on your screen. Caller ID can be spoofed, and a badge image, official-sounding title, or phone number supplied by the caller does not prove who they are. Find the agency’s website and contact information independently, then use those details to ask whether the claim is genuine.
  4. Keep evidence if it is safe. Save texts, emails, voicemails, usernames, payment instructions, receipts, and the dates and times of contact. Do not put yourself at risk to collect evidence.
  5. Report through the channel that fits the conduct. Immediate danger belongs with emergency services; suspected scams can be reported to the FTC; immigration-services fraud and suspected unauthorized legal practice can be reported to EOIR. The routes are explained below.

How to recognize an impersonation attempt

In FTC-described scams, someone claiming to be ICE or USCIS may say you violated immigration law, that your identity information is wrong, or that you owe a fee or immigration bond. They may threaten arrest or deportation unless you pay or disclose information. The FTC says ICE and USCIS do not call out of the blue to demand money, and do not accept gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers as payment. Its guidance also warns that caller ID can be falsified, including to look like an agency number: FTC guidance on immigration-officer impersonation.

EOIR has separately warned about callers spoofing the immigration court’s phone number and posing as employees to request money. Its notice said EOIR personnel do not call individuals about compromised Social Security numbers or ask them for money. That notice dates to 2022, so use the current official EOIR website to confirm case-information options and contact details: EOIR Fraud and Abuse Prevention Program.

A threat can be targeted, not just a mass scam

A threat framed as immigration enforcement may be directed at a particular person. In a September 30, 2026 release, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York reported that a former NYPD sergeant pleaded guilty to falsely posing as an ICE official and telling a victim and her family to report to an ICE office or face further legal action and enforcement measures: DOJ case announcement. The case demonstrates that such intimidation can be personal; it does not establish how frequently it occurs.

If the person comes to your home

In-person contact calls for a different response than a suspicious message. ACLU immigrant-rights guidance recommends staying calm, not running, arguing, resisting, or obstructing, and keeping your hands visible. You can ask whether the person is an immigration agent and ask to see identification through a window or peephole. If they seek entry, ask whether they have a warrant signed by a judge and request to inspect it through the window or under the door: ACLU: Know Your Rights—Immigrants’ Rights.

The ACLU explains that an ICE administrative warrant, including Form I-205, does not by itself authorize entry into a home without consent. The effect of a document depends on its type and terms and the circumstances, so this general guidance cannot determine the legal status of a particular encounter. Do not lie, provide false documents, or sign anything before speaking with a lawyer. If someone is forcing entry or presents an immediate safety threat, prioritize physical safety and call emergency services when possible.

Situation What to do
Immediate danger or threat of violence Call 911. FTC guidance on threatening scams also recommends reporting threats to local police.
Suspected consumer scam or threatening demand for money or information Report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. FTC guidance says not to respond or pay even when the scammer makes threats.
Suspected immigration-services fraud or unauthorized practice of law Submit a complaint to EOIR’s Fraud and Abuse Prevention Program. EOIR asks for details such as dates, locations, identifying information, and available evidence.
Suspected benefit fraud involving a USCIS application Use the tip process on the official USCIS website. This route is for suspected benefit fraud related to USCIS applications, not a substitute for emergency response.
Information about suspected criminal activity for ICE Use the ICE Tip Form, which accepts anonymous tips. ICE says tip submitters should not expect an individual status update; call 911 for emergencies.
Question about an immigration court case Check EOIR’s official website for current case-information options and contact details. An EOIR warning from 2022 listed an automated hotline and online system, but those details can change.

These steps do not decide an immigration case

This guidance is for people in the United States facing suspected impersonation or threats. It cannot establish whether a particular person, document, or enforcement contact is genuine, or provide legal advice for an individual case. If you need advice about your circumstances, speak with a qualified immigration lawyer or an accredited representative. A suspicious call does not prove that every enforcement contact is fraudulent, and reporting an incident cannot guarantee a particular outcome.
