If self-checkout charged you twice for one item or charged you for an item you did not receive, first compare the itemized receipt with your purchase and payment account. Save the records, ask the retailer to correct the specific error, and contact your card issuer or bank promptly if it remains unresolved. In the U.S., credit-card billing-error procedures differ from debit-card electronic-transfer rules, and deadlines can apply.
First, identify where the error appears
Check the itemized receipt against what you bought and took home. Note the item description, quantity, price, transaction date, store location, and register or lane number if shown. Then check your payment account: a duplicate line on a receipt is not the same as two separate entries on a card or bank account.
- Duplicate on the receipt: The item may have been scanned more than once. Record the incorrect line and amount.
- Charge for an item you did not receive: Check whether the receipt lists the item. If it does, explain that you were charged but did not get it; if it does not, describe what happened at checkout.
- Two account entries: Note whether each entry is pending or posted. If an entry is pending, monitor the account to see whether it posts or disappears; there is no universal timeline established here for pending entries to resolve.
Keep the receipt or e-receipt, a screenshot or statement showing the relevant account entry, and any messages or case number from the store. The FTC recommends keeping receipts and communications when documenting a purchase issue: FTC guidance on credit and debit card charge errors.

Start with the store’s customer-service desk, a manager, or its customer-support channel. Give the date, location, transaction details, and the exact amount in question. Ask the retailer to review the transaction and refund or correct the disputed amount. Request written confirmation or a case number, and keep a note of when you spoke and with whom.

The CFPB advises consumers to contact the company that sold the product or service first and ask it to refund the money or undo the charge: CFPB guidance on getting money back for a charge you did not accept. If the store does not promptly fix a posted error, move to the payment provider rather than letting an extended store discussion put a dispute deadline at risk.
If you paid by credit card
A duplicate billing or charge for something you did not receive may qualify as a billing error under the U.S. Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA) process for credit cards and other revolving credit. For that formal process, the FTC says to send a written notice to the issuer’s billing-inquiries address. Explain the error and include copies, not originals, of supporting documents. The issuer should receive the letter within 60 days after it sent the first statement containing the error.

Under the FTC’s description of the process, the issuer must acknowledge the complaint within 30 days unless it has already resolved it, and resolve it within 90 days. While the issuer investigates, you may withhold the disputed amount and related charges, but you must pay the undisputed portion of the bill. See the FTC’s FCBA billing-problem guidance. The CFPB also says to send a billing-error notice within 60 days of the charge appearing on the statement; follow your issuer’s instructions and do not delay.

Debit-card protections and procedures are different. Contact the card issuer, usually your bank, promptly and ask which dispute process applies to your situation. Follow up in writing if instructed, and describe the facts accurately. The FTC cautions that you may not have the same ability to obtain a refund for non-delivery with a debit card as you do through the credit-card billing-error process: FTC guidance on credit and debit card charge errors.

CFPB timelines for electronic-transfer claims concern the procedures described for unauthorized transactions, not every merchant complaint. The CFPB says a bank generally has ten business days to investigate an unauthorized electronic-transfer report, subject to exceptions and process conditions; some point-of-sale debit-card cases can take up to 90 days for final resolution. Those figures should not be treated as a blanket deadline or outcome for a self-checkout merchant error. Explain what happened and ask the bank how it classifies the claim: CFPB guidance on problems with electronic funds transfers.
Keep the claim specific and truthful
Dispute only the incorrect amount or transaction. Do not call a merchant scanning mistake fraud or an unauthorized transaction unless that is what actually happened. For a credit-card billing-error claim, keep paying amounts not in dispute as required, and retain copies of every submission and response.

Some states provide remedies for particular scanner errors, but the rules are state-specific and may not cover a missed item or every duplicate scan. Michigan’s Attorney General describes a Scanner Error Bill of Rights for a qualifying shelf-price overcharge: the automatic checkout scanner charged more than the displayed shelf price, the transaction was completed, and the shopper has a receipt identifying the item and charged price.
In Michigan, the shopper must notify the seller within 30 days. The state says the seller may refund the difference plus a bonus equal to ten times that difference, with a $1 minimum and $5 maximum, within two days after notice; it also describes a possible court remedy if the seller does not provide the refund and bonus. These terms apply to the Michigan shelf-price framework described by the state, not automatically to bagged-but-missing items, all duplicate scans, or shoppers elsewhere. See the Michigan Attorney General’s Scanner Error Bill of Rights. If you live elsewhere, check your state attorney general or consumer-protection agency for applicable rules.
