To stop a Google Maps location share, open your profile menu, choose Location sharing, select the person, and tap or click Stop. On Android, you can also use Settings > Location > Location services > Google Location Sharing, select the recipient, and tap Stop. If the share appears to remain active, check every Google account and device that may be signed in. Google’s Location Sharing controls are specific to both account and device, so stopping it on one phone does not change another device’s setting.
Stop the share with the specific person
The per-person Stop command is the definitive way to end an ongoing Google Maps Location Sharing connection. It removes that recipient from the active share instead of merely pausing future location updates.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Location sharing.
- Tap the person whose access you want to end.
- Tap Stop and confirm if Maps asks.
Repeat those steps for every person listed. Stopping one recipient does not automatically stop other people with whom you shared your location.
Android
Android’s documented system route is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Location.
- Tap Location services.
- Choose Google Location Sharing.
- Select the person.
- Tap Stop.
You can also open Google Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, choose Location sharing, select the recipient, and use Stop when that control is shown.

Computer
- Open Google Maps in a browser and sign in to the Google account that created the share.
- Open the profile menu and choose Location sharing.
- Find the person in the list.
- Click Stop next to that person.
If the person is not listed, you may be viewing a different Google account from the one that started the share, or the active connection may be on another device.
Choose the control that matches what you want to stop
Google exposes several controls that sound similar but have different effects. Use the narrowest control that solves the problem.

If the share still appears to be active, check the account and device
Location Sharing is both account-specific and device-specific. Google’s help documentation says that if you are signed in on more than one device, you must adjust the setting separately on each device. A share can therefore seem impossible to turn off when you stopped it on one phone but another phone, tablet, or browser session is still using the same account.

- In Google Maps, tap your profile picture or initial and read the account email currently selected.
- Switch to each other Google account you use in Maps and inspect Location sharing.
- Repeat the per-person Stop action for every recipient shown.
- On each phone or tablet signed in to those accounts, open the relevant Location Sharing controls and repeat the check.
- If you use Google Maps in a browser, verify the browser is signed in to the same account and stop any remaining person-level share there.
Do not assume that signing out of one device changes the sharing configuration on another. The setting must be managed where that account/device combination is active.

Understand Android’s “Use Location Sharing” switch
Android’s master switch is useful for pausing updates, but it is not an account-wide delete button. When Use Location Sharing is off, Google says that your existing shares are not stopped; recipients simply stop receiving updated real-time location until you turn the setting back on. The pause applies separately to each Google account on a device.
Pause updates temporarily
- Open Settings > Location > Location services > Google Location Sharing.
- Select the Google account you want to control if Android presents more than one.
- Turn Use Location Sharing off.
Use this only when retaining the configured recipients is acceptable. If your goal is to remove someone’s access permanently, return to the person’s entry and tap Stop instead.
Stop a navigation trip-progress share separately
Sharing your progress to a destination during active navigation is a separate action from a standing Location Sharing connection. If that is what people are seeing, stop it from the navigation screen:
- While navigation is running, swipe up on the navigation information card.
- Choose Stop sharing.
Google says trip-progress sharing also ends when navigation stops or when you reach the destination. If a person still appears in your ordinary Location Sharing list, stop that person there as well; ending trip progress does not replace the per-recipient control for a standing share.

Use device Location only as a broad fallback
Turning off the device’s main Location setting can prevent Google Maps from sharing a location from that device, but it affects much more than one recipient. Other apps lose access to device location, and location-based features such as navigation, local search, weather positioning, or emergency functions may be impaired until Location is restored. Because of those side effects, use the per-person Stop command first and reserve the device switch for situations where you deliberately want location access disabled across the phone.
What this fallback does not solve
- It does not remove the configured recipient from your Google account’s share list.
- It does not change a share originating from another phone or tablet.
- It does not stop a different Google account on the same device.
After re-enabling device Location, review Location Sharing again and stop each recipient whose access you no longer want.
Do not confuse notifications with sharing
Location-sharing notifications are only alerts about sharing activity. Disabling those notifications does not revoke a recipient’s access and does not pause location updates. Google states that notifications stop automatically when the underlying share stops, so change the share itself rather than silencing its alerts.

Google notes that Location Sharing may not be available for some supervised accounts, certain Google Workspace domains, or some regions. A parent or guardian can control a supervised account, while a Workspace administrator may restrict the feature for an organization-managed account.

Signs that an account restriction may be involved
- The Location Sharing option is absent even after you confirm the correct account.
- The control is visible but cannot be changed.
- You are using a school or work account rather than a personal Google account.
- The account is supervised by a parent or guardian.
In those cases, check with the parent, guardian, or Workspace administrator who manages the account. Changing the phone’s general Location setting will not remove an administrator-imposed restriction.
A complete check when someone says they can still see you
Use this sequence to avoid stopping the wrong feature or the wrong account:
- Identify the type of sharing. Decide whether it is a person-level Location Sharing entry or trip progress from active navigation.
- Stop the narrow share. Use Stop beside the person, or Stop sharing on the navigation card for trip progress.
- Check the selected account. Open the Maps profile menu and confirm the email address.
- Inspect other accounts. Switch accounts and repeat the check if you use more than one.
- Inspect other devices. Repeat the process on every phone, tablet, and computer where those accounts are signed in.
- Use Android’s master switch only for a pause. Remember that it leaves existing shares configured.
- Use device Location only if you accept system-wide effects. Restore it when you need navigation and other location-dependent functions.
- Reopen Location sharing. Confirm that the intended person is no longer listed as an active share and that no separate trip-progress share is running.
Why the obvious fixes fail
Turning off notifications
This removes alerts but leaves the share intact. It changes what you are told, not what the recipient can access.

The Android switch pauses updates only. The recipient remains configured until you select that person and tap Stop.

Stopping the share on one phone
Because the setting is device- and account-specific, another signed-in device can continue to publish location. Repeat the stop action for every relevant combination.
Stopping navigation but not a standing share
Ending trip progress handles the current route. It does not remove a person from your ordinary Location Sharing list, which requires its own Stop action.
Disabling device Location and overlooking the consequences
The broad switch can block location access for every app and disable location-based features. It is a privacy fallback, not the cleanest way to revoke one recipient.

What success looks like
After you use Stop, the selected recipient should no longer appear as an active person-level share in that account’s Location Sharing controls. If navigation was sharing trip progress, the navigation card should no longer offer an active share for that route. If either condition is not true, repeat the check with the correct account on each signed-in device before changing broader phone settings.
