If an oil supply shock pushes fuel prices up, start by reducing avoidable driving, then check what help is available where you live. Combine errands, use another travel option when it is practical, and check official local updates if you suspect an actual shortage. Household changes can reduce fuel use and spending, but they cannot replace oil supply lost in a major disruption.
First, separate higher prices from a local fuel shortage
A disruption to oil supplies can tighten global markets and raise prices for crude oil and refined products such as diesel. That does not, by itself, show that fuel is unavailable at a particular station. The International Energy Agency (IEA), in its 20 March 2026 report, described disruption affecting crude oil and products including diesel, jet fuel and liquefied petroleum gas; the report is not a live update on prices or station availability. Check current government, local authority and fuel-retailer updates for your area if you need to know whether a local shortage exists. IEA report and demand-side options
Reduce the fuel you need for necessary trips
Combine errands and choose another mode for suitable trips
Group errands into one outing rather than making several separate car journeys. For short trips, walking, cycling or public transport may be practical alternatives, depending on route availability, safety, accessibility and weather. These are among the demand-reduction options identified by the IEA; no single option suits every location or household. IEA transport measures
Work remotely if your job allows it
For workers whose jobs permit it, the IEA estimates that three additional remote-work days could cut national oil consumption from cars by 2%–6%, with an average potential reduction of around 20% for individual drivers. These are estimates for the measure, not a guarantee of an equivalent saving for any particular household. IEA estimate and qualifications
#1 Best Overall
- Smooth 6 L/min Pouring: This metal can delivers up to 6 L/min with a wide 20 mm hose and snap spout, giving you smooth, splash-free pours without the annoying "glug"
- Compact Size: This 5.3Gal/20L metal can (14.2 x 7.1 x 20.1 inches) slips into your trunk with ease. Lightweight yet practical, it's ideal for road trips, camping, or outdoor work
Share rides and drive efficiently
Car sharing can reduce the number of vehicles making the same trip. Smooth, efficient driving is another immediate road-transport measure in the IEA’s options. The IEA source does not establish a specific percentage saving for an individual who shares a ride or changes driving style.
Follow posted speed limits
The IEA estimates that reducing highway speed limits by at least 10 km/h could lower an individual driver’s oil consumption by 5%–10%. This is an estimate tied to a speed-limit measure, not advice to break local rules or drive at a speed that is unsafe for road conditions. Follow posted limits and drive safely. Check whether financial support is available to you
Look up current national, regional or local government programs and consumer-protection guidance. Eligibility and availability depend on where you live and your circumstances, so do not assume a temporary benefit or subsidy applies universally. The IEA emphasizes targeted consumer support because public funds are limited. For EU member states, the European Commission describes possible approaches including income support and energy vouchers; that does not establish that a particular program is currently open or that every reader qualifies. What household actions can—and cannot—do
Demand-side changes can reduce consumption and help ease affordability pressure, but they cannot replace supply lost during a major disruption. The IEA’s 20 March 2026 report says restoring disrupted transit is the single most important action for returning flows to stability. The agency also said that about 45% of global oil demand is accounted for by road transport, which is why many of its immediate demand measures focus on how people travel.
