If Chromecast with Google TV became sluggish or started rebooting after an update, work through Google’s recovery order rather than assuming the update is defective: restart from Settings > System > Restart, force-stop recently used apps, finish app and system updates, and distinguish a network problem from a software problem. A progressing update can take 10–12 minutes, while a slowly progressing download may take 20–30 minutes. If the device repeatedly reaches Android recovery or cannot complete the process, a factory reset is the final software step and erases all user data.
Google’s release notes do not establish that a particular firmware release causes the exact combination of lag and repeated restarting. Treat the timing as a useful clue, not proof of causation.
First, identify which problem you actually have
“Slow” can describe several different failures. The correct fix depends on whether the Google TV interface is delayed, the video stream is buffering, an update is still progressing, or the device is trapped in a boot loop.

When contacting support, note whether your unit is the HD or 4K model. The two models share the current production build listed by Google, but identifying the exact hardware removes ambiguity.

Check the update state and installed build
Chromecast with Google TV checks its system software on the television itself. Google says Chromecast with Google TV updates do not appear in the Google Home app.
- From the Google TV home screen, open Settings > System > About > System update.
- Read the status and the installed system build. Do not start casting or repeatedly interrupt the device while an update is actively installing.
- Compare the displayed build with Google’s Chromecast with Google TV release-notes page. That page was last updated 23 June 2026 and lists production build UTTC.250917.004 for both Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV (HD).
The listed build includes an Android security patch level from October 2025, along with other bug fixes and performance improvements. Google releases firmware in stages, so a device may not show that build immediately. A missing build number by itself does not prove that the update failed.
Restart the device correctly
For ordinary menu lag, Google’s direct first step is an in-system restart.

- Confirm the restart and wait for the home screen to return before opening several apps at once.
If the interface will not respond, remove power from the Chromecast for one full minute, then reconnect it. Disconnecting the Chromecast from the television’s HDMI port alone does not reboot it; the power source must be removed. Use the supplied power arrangement or another source that can provide the device’s required power, and make sure the cable is firmly seated.

A restart clears a temporary stalled process without deleting your apps or account setup. It is therefore the least disruptive step and should come before a reset.
Reduce app load and finish app updates
Recently opened apps can continue consuming memory or leave a process stuck after a system update. Force-stopping them does not uninstall the app or remove its account data.
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select each recently opened or obviously misbehaving app.
- Choose Force stop, confirm, and return to the home screen.
Then finish pending application updates:
- Open Google Play Store.
- Select your profile icon.
- Choose Manage apps & games > Updates > Update all.
- Leave the device connected to power while updates complete.
Google warns that Google TV can be slower while app updates are in progress. Let the queue finish, then restart once and test the menus with only one app open. If one app remains slow while the rest of the interface is normal, its own update or data is a more likely cause than the system firmware.

Check and complete the system update
After app updates finish, return to Settings > System > About > System update and follow the on-screen instructions. Keep the Chromecast powered and connected to the network until the process reports completion.

Google’s Chromecast update help says, “The update typically takes 10-12 minutes.” That is a typical duration, not a guarantee for every connection or installation. If a download is moving slowly, Google’s guidance allows roughly 20–30 minutes before treating the progress as unusually long.
If the progress screen appears stuck
- Look for movement in the percentage or status instead of judging by the clock alone.
- Confirm that the Chromecast’s power adapter and cable are connected securely.
- Check that the home network is working on another device and that the router has not changed its Wi-Fi settings.
- If the update has taken substantially longer than the normal window, disconnect power for one minute and reconnect it. Google documents this as a way to restart the update automatically.
Do not repeatedly pull the HDMI plug or cycle power while the installation is actively changing screens. An interruption can leave you with a recovery prompt, whereas a slow but progressing download may complete if left alone.
Recover a device that keeps rebooting
If the Chromecast never reaches Google TV and instead returns to Android recovery, use the choices on that screen rather than treating every reboot as a network issue.
- Select Try again first.
- Allow the device to boot completely.
- If it returns to recovery, select Factory data reset.
The recovery reset is destructive: it removes user data and requires the device to be set up again. If “Try again” succeeds, allow the device to finish booting and check the system-update screen before reinstalling a large number of apps.

When the screen is black or the loop does not show recovery
First perform the one-minute power disconnect described above. Reconnect power and wait through a complete boot attempt. If the same cycle repeats, record the exact message or screen, whether the reboot occurs during the Google logo, during update installation, or only after launching an app, and proceed to the reset options rather than repeatedly interrupting it.
Factory-reset options and consequences
Factory reset is an escalation, not a routine performance tweak. Google describes it this way: “A factory reset returns the settings of your Chromecast or Google TV Streamer device to its default factory settings.” It clears installed apps, accounts, preferences, downloaded content, and other user data, and it cannot be undone.
Reset from Google TV settings
Use this path when the interface is usable:
- Open Settings > System > About > Factory reset.
- Read the warning and confirm the reset.
- Keep power connected while the device erases data and restarts.
Reset with the physical button
Use the device button when menus are unavailable:
- Leave the Chromecast plugged in and powered.
- Press and hold the button on the device.
- Continue holding until the LED turns solid white.
- Release the button and allow the reset and reboot to finish.
Afterward, complete setup, sign in again, reinstall only the apps you need, and check for system updates before restoring your full app load. For update trouble, Google recommends setting the device up again and, if available, using a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network during setup.

If menus open promptly and only playback buffers or stutters, a factory reset or app force-stop is unlikely to repair the underlying issue. Restart the router, verify that other devices can reach the internet, and test the Chromecast close enough to the access point for a reliable signal.

Google documents Ethernet through a separately sold adapter as an option for reducing home Wi-Fi problems. Check the adapter’s exact compatibility and power requirements before buying or connecting one. Ethernet can help buffering caused by wireless conditions; it will not repair slow menus, a failed firmware installation, or a reboot loop.
Use the current firmware information without over-interpreting it
Google’s firmware notes page, updated 23 June 2026, lists UTTC.250917.004 as the production build for both the 4K and HD Chromecast with Google TV models. The notes identify an October 2025 Android security patch level and additional bug fixes and performance improvements. Because rollout is staged, your device may receive the build later than another unit.
Those release notes do not identify a specific update as causing the exact pattern of post-update lag and repeated restarts. The fact that symptoms began after an update is worth recording for support, but it is not confirmation of a Google-wide update bug.
What to record before escalating
If restarting, app cleanup, update checks, and the appropriate recovery step do not resolve the problem, gather details before contacting Google:
- Model: Chromecast with Google TV (HD) or (4K).
- System build shown under Settings > System > About, including whether it is UTTC.250917.004 or another build.
- The exact on-screen message, percentage, or Android recovery option.
- Whether the reboot happens during startup, while an update is installing, after opening a particular app, or only during streaming.
- Whether menus are slow independently of video playback.
- Whether power was disconnected for one minute and what happened afterward.
- Which apps were force-stopped, whether Play Store updates completed, and whether a factory reset was performed.
Google directs unresolved cases to the Google TV Help Community, its feedback channels, or the device manufacturer. Providing the model, build, timing, and steps already attempted helps support separate a software loop from a power, network, or hardware fault.
