If CHKDSK appears stuck at stage 4 in Windows 11, a motionless percentage alone does not prove that the scan has frozen or that the drive has failed. Stage 4 can take a long time when CHKDSK is using /r, which reads the disk to look for physical errors and attempt recovery from affected sectors. Microsoft does not specify a stage-4 time limit or a universal point at which it is safe to force the PC off.
If Windows still opens your files, copy important data to another drive before trying more repairs. Then decide what to do based on whether the scan shows progress, whether the disk is an HDD or SSD, and whether Windows reports a storage-health warning.
Why CHKDSK stage 4 can appear stuck
CHKDSK’s /r parameter looks for physical disk errors and attempts to recover data from affected sectors. Microsoft explains that the work can take considerable time: on a large-capacity HDD, physical read speed can be the bottleneck even if the disk has no errors and contains little data. The percentage on screen is not enough to tell you that the scan has stopped.
Microsoft’s CHKDSK command reference does not give a typical duration, a stage-4-specific runtime threshold, or a general safe forced-shutdown rule. Avoid deciding that the scan is frozen just because it has remained at one percentage for a while.

Protect files you can still read
If you can get into Windows and the files are accessible, copy important documents, photos, and other data to a separate storage device before further repair attempts. A backup protects your files; it does not repair the disk or guarantee recovery of data that is already unreadable.
If the drive is making unusual noises, repeatedly disappearing, or Windows displays a critical storage warning, prioritize protecting data and getting support rather than repeatedly running full scans. This is cautious troubleshooting: the warning is a reason to take the disk seriously, not proof that every file is lost.

Look for evidence of activity
Check whether the displayed percentage changes or whether there are other signs the PC is working. A static-looking screen by itself cannot establish that CHKDSK has hung. Because Microsoft provides no universal time limit or safe shutdown threshold, there is no reliable number of minutes or hours after which every user should force the PC off.

Is it safe to turn off my PC?
There is no universal answer based on the stage number or a stationary percentage. Microsoft’s CHKDSK guidance does not establish a safe point for forcing a shutdown during stage 4. If the scan may still be active, avoid treating the power button as the routine next step. Consider what data is at risk and whether the drive may be failing before interrupting it; forcing a shutdown cannot make an unhealthy disk safe or recover files.

Check for a Windows storage-health warning
When Windows is accessible, check the disk’s health details at Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes. Select the disk, open Properties, and review its health details if available.
Microsoft says a critical warning can indicate degraded reliability due to significant media-related errors or an internal NVM subsystem error. Its guidance is to back up data and contact support. Windows’ health-monitoring warning feature applies to NVM SSDs; it does not monitor SATA SSDs or HDDs through this feature. So, seeing a warning matters, but not seeing one does not rule out a problem with those other drive types.

What to do after CHKDSK finishes
Use the result of the completed scan and check its log instead of repeatedly rerunning full scans without a reason. Microsoft documents two ways to find CHKDSK results:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Event Viewer and filter Windows Logs > Application for the sources Chkdsk and Wininit.
- Retrieve the event with the documented PowerShell
Get-WinEventapproaches in Microsoft’s CHKDSK reference.
CHKDSK’s options do different jobs: /f corrects logical file-system errors, while /r looks for physical disk errors and attempts recovery from affected sectors. To make corrections, CHKDSK must be able to lock the drive; without /f, it can report errors without fixing them. Do not assume that a completed scan guarantees that files have been restored or that a drive is healthy.

Microsoft notes that repeated full-surface SSD scans, particularly with /r, could slightly increase write/erase cycles unnecessarily; occasional checks are not a significant concern. That is not a reason to assume one scan will damage an SSD, but it is another reason not to rerun scans without a clear need.
If Windows will not start
If the scan ends and Windows still does not boot, use the applicable options in Microsoft’s Windows recovery options guidance. Before choosing a recovery step, consider whether your files are backed up and whether you can access the BitLocker recovery key: Microsoft says most WinRE recovery options require that key for BitLocker-protected devices. Some recovery options can cause data loss, and reinstalling from installation media may erase everything, so reinstalling is not the first response to a long-running CHKDSK scan.
