If an online travel agency (OTA) has acknowledged your booking but you cannot tell whether the airline, hotel, or other provider has it, verify the reservation directly before assuming it is confirmed. Check your records, ask the OTA for a written status and the provider’s reference, then contact the provider using official contact details. A missing email alone does not prove the booking failed, and there is no universal confirmation window or remedy.
First, find out what status you actually have
An OTA receipt, a card authorization, and a provider-confirmed reservation are different things. For a flight, an itinerary or booking reference does not by itself establish that an e-ticket has been issued. The UK Civil Aviation Authority says, “There is no set legal period when tickets should be issued.” That is UK guidance, but it illustrates why a universal wait time should not be assumed. Check every record and message
- Sign in to the OTA account and review the trip’s status, itinerary, and any notices that it is pending, failed, or awaiting ticketing.
- Search your inbox, spam, and other filtered folders for messages from both the OTA and the provider.
- For a flight, look for an e-ticket number as well as the booking reference. For lodging, look for the property’s own reservation reference.
- Save the booking receipt, payment record, confirmation or status screens, the terms shown when you booked, and all support messages. Keep the date and time of each contact.
Identify who sold the trip
The OTA may be the contracting seller, or it may only have introduced you to another provider. The contract terms and the seller named on your receipt can affect who must handle questions or a refund. Japan’s Tourism Agency explains that travel reservation sites can operate under different models and that contract conditions vary by site. Ask the OTA for a clear, written answer
Contact the OTA promptly through its official app, website, or published support channel. Include the itinerary number and passenger or guest name, but do not send payment details or identity documents unless the official channel requires them.

Ask the OTA to answer these questions for every part of the trip:
- Is the flight, room, or other service confirmed with the provider?
- For each flight, has an e-ticket actually been issued? If so, what is the ticket number?
- What is the airline’s or property’s own reference, if different from the OTA itinerary number?
- If it is not confirmed, will the OTA complete the booking or cancel and refund it? What process and date should you expect?
Request a case number and keep the reply. If support gives only a vague status, ask it to state plainly whether the provider can locate the reservation and whether the ticket has been issued.

Verify with the airline, property, or each package provider
Use the provider’s official website or contact details you find independently—not a phone number or payment link in an unexpected message. Give the provider the name on the booking, travel dates, and reference numbers, then ask whether it can locate the reservation and whether it is active.

Contact the airline that will operate the flight. Ask it to check the booking reference and confirm ticket issuance for each passenger and flight segment. If the airline cannot find the booking or ticket, return to the OTA with that information and request a written explanation and resolution. Accommodation
Contact the property through its official website or an independently verified phone number. Confirm the guest name, dates, room or booking details, and whether the property has the reservation in its system. Check the booking terms for payment, cancellation, refund, and check-in conditions; these are specific to the accommodation and applicable local rules. New Zealand Consumer Protection: accommodation.
Packages and multi-stop trips
Check every component separately: each airline segment, hotel, transfer, tour, or other service. One confirmed element does not establish that the rest of a package is booked. Keep a note of which provider has verified each component and which has not.

If the provider cannot find the booking
Ask the OTA, in writing, to say whether it will complete the reservation or refund the payment, and to explain the relevant process. Preserve the provider’s response and your records. A missing email is not conclusive, but if the provider confirms that no reservation exists, treat that as a substantive problem and seek a resolution promptly.

Escalate through the right local route
Work out which company is the legal seller or contracting party from the receipt and booking terms, then check the consumer, aviation, or travel-protection rules in the relevant jurisdiction. Do not treat another country’s complaint route as a universal remedy.
- United Kingdom: The CAA describes different routes for particular travel-agent failure situations, including distinctions involving ATOL holders, airlines, and trade associations. Check which category applies to your booking before making a claim. CAA guidance on problems with a travel agent.
- British Columbia: Consumer Protection BC describes possible access to the Travel Assurance Fund for consumers who meet its conditions, after other steps. It is a local scheme, not an automatic or worldwide entitlement. Consumer Protection BC: what to do if your travel agency closes.
In Japan, the National Consumer Affairs Center reported that consultations about travel booked online in fiscal year 2022 were approximately twice the 2021 level. That is a relative comparison, not an absolute count or a measure of an individual booking’s likelihood of failure. Japan National Consumer Affairs Center notice, September 20, 2023.
If departure or check-in is close
Make verification urgent. Contact the OTA and provider through the fastest official channels available, state the departure or check-in time, and ask for a definite status in writing. If you are considering buying a replacement, first establish whether the original booking is still live and whether it can be canceled or refunded; the available guidance does not establish a universally safe rule for duplicate bookings.
Watch for fake payment demands
Do not pay an unexpected “confirmation,” “release,” or “reactivation” charge through a wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, or payment-app-only request without independently verifying it. The FTC identifies unusual payment methods as scam warning signs in travel-rental contexts.
