Stop using the LED face mask while your skin is irritated or dry. Keep your routine gentle, pause products that may irritate skin, and give the area time to heal. Contact a healthcare provider for hives, inflammation, pain, a rash, or redness after LED treatment; if the problem does not improve or gets worse after a few days, consult a dermatologist. Symptoms alone cannot identify the cause.
What to do right now
- Pause the mask. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises stopping at-home light devices until facial skin heals. This is cautious skin-care guidance; it does not establish that LED light caused your symptoms. Read the AAD’s advice for face-mask skin problems.
- Simplify your routine. Cleanse gently and avoid scrubbing or adding new active products to try to fix the reaction. The AAD advises pausing potentially irritating products such as salicylic-acid acne treatments, anti-aging products, peels, and scrubs while skin heals.
- Protect raw spots. For raw, irritated areas, the AAD says petroleum jelly can help protect the skin as it heals. It is supportive care, not a way to diagnose or remove the underlying cause.
When to seek medical advice
Contact a healthcare provider if you develop hives, inflammation, pain, a rash, or redness after LED therapy, as advised by Cleveland Clinic. If your skin does not improve after a few days of gentle care, or it worsens, consult a dermatologist, following the AAD’s guidance. There is no established recovery timeline that applies to every reaction.

What might be behind the irritation?
Dryness or irritation alone cannot show whether the mask, a skin-care product, sensitivity to the mask material, a medicine, an underlying condition, or another factor is responsible. The available guidance does not establish the cause for an individual case.

The FDA’s photobiomodulation guidance says this type of treatment is not recommended for people with photosensitivity disorders, people taking photosensitizing medication, or people with an active infection, wound, or lesion in the treatment area. The AAD also advises discussing red-light use with a dermatologist if you have a condition such as lupus or take medicine that increases light sensitivity: AAD red-light therapy guidance.

Individual reports in the FDA’s MAUDE database illustrate why an account should not be treated as proof. In a 2026 report involving a HIGHERDOSE red and infrared mask, the manufacturer said the cause was still under investigation; preliminary possibilities included photosensitivity or silicone allergy. A separate Currentbody-mask report records a user’s account of a rash, first-degree burn, and blisters after use following tretinoin. These are individual reports, not proof that a device caused an event and not a measure of how often such reactions occur.

Do not restart on a universal schedule. Wait until your skin has healed, and ask a clinician for advice if you are unsure whether your skin condition or medication affects light sensitivity. Before any future session, follow the exact instructions for your device, including its treatment duration, frequency, and specified eye protection. The FDA notes that light-based procedures can injure eyes, and eye-protection requirements can vary by device.

The AAD says FDA clearance indicates a device is considered low risk; clearance by itself does not establish effectiveness. It also advises people with darker skin tones to speak with a dermatologist before home red-light use because visible red light may increase the risk of hyperpigmentation. If irritation returns or you are uncertain whether it is safe to resume, stop and seek medical advice rather than testing the mask again.
