If an EEG sleep headband causes pain or uncomfortable pressure, take it off and stop using it; do not try to sleep through the discomfort or tighten it to improve the fit. If the band feels comfortable but audio, tracking prompts, or worry about the results is keeping you awake, simplify or pause those features and compare with a night without the device. Muse-specific settings and fit instructions apply only to Muse models; persistent sleep problems deserve a conversation with a medical provider, not just another device adjustment.
First, decide whether to stop for the night
Remove the headband if it causes pain, uncomfortable pressure, or worsening physical discomfort. Muse’s health and safety guidance specifically tells users experiencing pain or discomfort to stop using the device and contact its support team. For Muse, the listed options are customercare@choosemuse.com or its Contact Support form. Follow the safety directions for your own device if it is not a Muse product.
Do not treat pain as a normal adjustment period, and do not pull the band tighter in an effort to force better sensor contact. Comfort is a prerequisite for trying a device again; it is not something to trade for a better-looking sleep score or signal reading. If you feel unwell or have a health concern, seek appropriate medical advice rather than relying on troubleshooting tips for a consumer device.
Muse notes that comfort can improve after a night or two as the experience becomes more familiar. That is not a reason to continue through pain, uncomfortable pressure, or worsening sleep. You can pause use and decide later whether a comfortable retry makes sense; you are not required to wear it every night while you adjust.

Work out what is actually interrupting sleep
“My sleep headband is keeping me awake” can describe several different problems. The next step depends on whether the disturbance is physical, comes from optional audio or prompts, or is caused by watching and worrying about tracking results. Change one factor at a time where it is comfortable and safe to do so; otherwise, it will be hard to tell what helped.
- Physical discomfort: Pressure, irritation, or an uncomfortable fit is a reason to take the device off. Do not continue the session to collect data.
- Audio or sleep experience: If the band itself feels comfortable, lower the volume or turn the optional audio off. On Muse S, Muse says sleep can be tracked without selecting a sleep experience, so a tracking-only session is an option.
- Awareness of the device: A headband or headphones can feel unfamiliar. Muse says users may become more aware of wearing them during early sessions, but that does not guarantee that you will adjust or that sleep will improve.
- Tracking-related worry: If scores, prompts, or thoughts about sleep are keeping you alert, step away from tracking rather than adding more settings to monitor.
Do not assume that another manufacturer offers Muse’s audio controls or tracking-only mode. Check the instructions for the exact model and distinguish optional features from the device’s basic tracking function.
It may help to separate “the headband is uncomfortable” from “the experience around the headband is distracting.” Audio can be turned down or disabled on a model that offers those controls; tracking prompts or app checking can be paused; and the entire device can be left off for a comparison night. These are different tests, not competing fixes. If the band itself is painful, skip the feature tests and stop wearing it.
Try a low-pressure troubleshooting sequence
There is no need to keep wearing a device every night while you troubleshoot it. A simple comparison can help identify whether a feature or the device itself seems to be contributing, without treating the result as a medical test.
- Stop if uncomfortable. Take the band off for the night if there is pain or uncomfortable pressure. Do not resume until you are comfortable and have followed the manufacturer’s safety guidance.
- If comfortable, remove optional audio from the test. For Muse S, lower the volume or select no sleep experience to test tracking without the sleep audio. Other devices may have different controls, so use their own instructions.
- Compare with a night without the headband. If sleep remains disrupted, or you want to see whether the band itself is part of the problem, take a night off from it. You do not need a device reading for that night to count as useful information about how you feel.
- Review the pattern in the morning. Note whether you slept more comfortably, whether the band felt physically irritating, and whether audio or monitoring seemed distracting. Avoid checking sleep results in bed if doing so makes you anxious or more alert.
- Decide whether a retry is worthwhile. Retry only if wearing it feels comfortable. If the problem persists or your sleep is getting worse, pause use and consider medical advice rather than repeatedly changing settings.
This comparison can help you make a practical decision; it cannot establish that an EEG headband caused a sleep problem or diagnose why you are sleeping poorly.
Keep the comparison simple and low pressure: quieter audio, no audio, or no headband are possible options, depending on what seems to be bothering you and what your model supports. You do not need to buy accessories or replacement equipment to test whether optional sound is the issue. Nor do you need to chase a particular score; the useful observation is whether you feel more comfortable and rested, not whether one night’s data looks ideal.

If you retry Muse S, adjust fit without overtightening
The following fit directions are specific to Muse S. They should not be transferred to other headbands, whose sensor placement and fit may differ. Follow the instructions for your exact model, and stop if an adjustment creates discomfort.
- Center the pod on your forehead.
- Position the band behind your ears and low at the base of your skull.
- Check that the sensors touch your skin, with loose hair cleared from between the sensors and skin.
- Make small adjustments until the band is comfortably snug. Do not overtighten to improve sensor readings.
Muse notes that a few adjustments may be needed for signal quality. If your problem is a poor signal rather than disrupted sleep, Muse’s signal guidance says a small amount of water on the forehead and sensors can improve initial signal detection by improving conductivity. That is a signal-quality suggestion, not a treatment for discomfort or evidence that the headband will improve sleep. If Muse S signal trouble remains after following the model’s instructions, contact Muse customer care.
In other words, fit troubleshooting and sleep troubleshooting are not interchangeable. A change that helps sensors detect a signal does not necessarily make the device more comfortable or make sleep better. If you are already comfortable and only seeing poor signal, consult your model’s directions; if you are uncomfortable, prioritize stopping rather than trying more adjustments.
Can you turn off sleep sounds and still track?
For Muse S, yes: Muse’s setup guidance says users can track sleep without choosing a sleep experience. That lets you test whether optional audio is distracting without abandoning tracking, provided the band itself is comfortable. You can also adjust the volume so audio feels calming rather than distracting, or choose no experience. These controls are Muse-specific; confirm the available options for any other device.
If even the tracking process is making you focus on whether you are asleep, a tracking-only session may not solve the underlying distraction. In that case, pause tracking too and see how you feel without the headband or its feedback. There is no need to buy another accessory or replace the device just to test whether optional audio is the issue.
Recommended Free Tools
Muse suggests sleep-friendly earbuds or soft headband-style headphones for people who choose sleep audio. That is a conditional option for someone who wants audio but finds the supplied listening setup uncomfortable; it is not the first response to audio that is keeping you awake. First try lowering or turning off the sound. Do not treat extra headphones as a solution to pain from the EEG band itself.

Step back if sleep tracking is making you anxious
Sleep data can become counterproductive when it prompts you to lie awake checking whether you have slept enough or achieved a particular score. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) advises that tracking should enhance sleep rather than add stress. Its 2026 public guidance says that someone lying awake worrying about sleep duration or quality may need to step back and consult a health care professional.
“However, it’s important that tracking enhances sleep and doesn’t cause more stress about it. If you find yourself lying awake worrying about your sleep duration or quality, it may be time to step back and consult with a health care professional about your concerns.”
Practically, that can mean turning off bedtime prompts, not opening the app at night, or pausing tracking. If you still choose to collect data, review it in the morning rather than using live results as a test you have to pass before you can sleep. A tracker’s estimate is not a diagnosis, and a disappointing number does not by itself tell you what caused a poor night.

This is a reason to change your relationship with the data, not a reason to keep checking more often for reassurance. You might take a break from scores, alerts, and sleep-duration goals, then decide later whether the information is useful to you. If worries continue or affect your sleep, discuss them with a health care professional rather than trying to interpret the tracker alone.
Know when to ask a medical provider
Talk with a licensed medical provider if sleep problems continue, you are dissatisfied with your sleep, or you experience excessive daytime sleepiness or fatigue. The AASM recommends discussing these concerns regardless of what a consumer wearable reports. Consumer sleep technology cannot replace clinical evaluation; it should not be used on its own to diagnose a sleep disorder or rule one out.
Do not wait for a headband’s score to confirm that a persistent problem matters. If you have relevant symptoms or concerns, describe what you are experiencing and how long it has been happening to a clinician. The device may provide consumer data, but it does not determine the appropriate evaluation or treatment.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
As AASM President Dr. Ilene Rosen put it, “While technology is advancing rapidly, and we are following the trends closely, consumer sleep devices currently are unable to diagnose sleep disorders.” That limitation matters whether a tracker reports a reassuring result or a concerning one: neither should replace clinical input when sleep problems persist or daytime functioning is affected.

Muse says people with a pacemaker or another implanted device should consult a physician or medical provider before using Muse. The manufacturer’s magnet warning specifically covers Muse S Gen 1 and Gen 2, which contain magnets. This is model-specific guidance; it should not be generalized to every EEG sleep headband. Check the safety information for the exact device you own and ask your provider if you are uncertain.
This is a pre-use safety question, not a setting to experiment with. Do not infer from this Muse warning that all sleep headbands contain magnets, or that a different device has the same guidance. Check the manufacturer’s safety information and consult your provider about your own implanted device before use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I stop wearing my EEG sleep headband if it hurts?
Yes. Remove it if it causes pain or uncomfortable pressure; do not try to sleep through it or tighten it. Muse specifically advises users with pain or discomfort to stop using the device and contact its support team. For another brand, follow that manufacturer’s safety guidance.
Can I turn off the sleep sounds and still track sleep?
For Muse S, Muse says you can track sleep without choosing a sleep experience. You can lower the volume or choose no experience to see whether audio is distracting, provided the band itself is comfortable. Other brands may have different controls.

My sleep headband is keeping me awake. Should I try another night with it?
If it is uncomfortable, stop for the night. If the band feels comfortable but optional audio or prompts seem distracting, simplify or pause those features. If disruption continues, compare with a night without the device. Do not assume that you will adjust or that a setting change will fix the problem.
Is my sleep tracker making me anxious?
If scores or sleep-duration estimates leave you lying awake worrying, step back from tracking and review any data in the morning rather than at night. The AASM says tracking should enhance sleep, not add stress. Consider discussing persistent worry or sleep trouble with a health care professional.
How do I know if a sleep problem needs a doctor?
Talk with a licensed medical provider if sleep problems continue, you are dissatisfied with your sleep, or you have excessive daytime sleepiness or fatigue. Consumer sleep technology cannot diagnose a sleep disorder or replace clinical evaluation, regardless of what the device reports.
Can I use Muse if I have a pacemaker or another implanted device?
Muse advises people with pacemakers or other implanted devices to consult a physician or medical provider before use. Its magnet warning specifically covers Muse S Gen 1 and Gen 2. Check the guidance for your exact model; do not apply this model-specific warning to every EEG wearable.
The Bottom Line
If your EEG sleep headband causes pain or pressure, take it off and stop using it. If the band is comfortable but audio, prompts, or tracking worry seems disruptive, simplify or pause those features and compare how you feel without the device. Muse S offers a tracking-only option, but fit and safety guidance vary by model. Persistent sleep problems, fatigue, or daytime sleepiness are reasons to talk with a licensed medical provider—not to rely on a consumer tracker’s score.
