If an AI-generated or altered intimate image appears to show you, treat it as nonconsensual intimate imagery (NCII), even if it is completely fabricated. First protect your immediate safety, record where the material appears without forwarding it, report the post to the hosting service, and use the separate tools for limiting reposts and removing search results. In the United States, qualifying platforms covered by the Take It Down Act must remove a reported image and known identical copies within 48 hours, but no single process removes every copy from the internet.
1. Check safety and preserve only what you need
You do not have to investigate, confront the person, or report before you are ready. If someone is threatening immediate physical harm or you are in danger, contact local emergency services now.
- Record the locations. Write down the page or post URL, account name, post ID if shown, and the date and time you found it. Keep threat, blackmail, or extortion messages in their original form. Google says links and screenshots or surrounding context can help it locate material, but avoid making extra copies of the intimate image.
- Do not amplify the image. Do not forward, repost, download, or send it to friends as proof. When a report form needs evidence, provide the URL and the minimum context requested. If the depicted person may be under 18, do not download or share the image at all.
- Secure your accounts. Change passwords and enable multifactor authentication if the person may have accessed an account or device. Do not give the poster access to your accounts, phone, computer, or cloud storage.
Permission to have an image taken, or to send an intimate image privately, is not permission for someone else to distribute it. The same principle applies when the image was generated or altered by artificial intelligence.

2. Report the post to the service hosting it
Use the report control on the post, profile, message, or search result, then use the platform’s help or support route if the first report does not provide a suitable category. Choose the closest option for nonconsensual intimate imagery, sexual exploitation, privacy, harassment, or intimate-image abuse. Include the exact links and identifiers you recorded.

United States: the 48-hour Take It Down Act process
The Federal Trade Commission says the Take It Down Act requires covered platforms to provide a request mechanism and remove qualifying intimate images, including AI deepfakes, and known identical copies within 48 hours after a valid request. This is a U.S. statutory route, not a promise that every website is covered or that every manipulated image qualifies. If a platform has no functioning request process or does not remove qualifying material within that period, report the platform to the FTC at TakeItDown.ftc.gov.
Keep the confirmation number, email, or screenshot showing when you submitted the request. A platform may ask for information needed to identify the content; do not volunteer a copy of the image beyond what its secure form requires.
When the poster is threatening to publish
Report the threat and the account even if the image has not yet appeared publicly. A platform may have a separate route for threats, blackmail, or sexual extortion. Do not negotiate by sending money, additional images, passwords, or access to a device.

3. Limit matching reposts with the appropriate service
Host-site reports remove specific posts. Hash-matching services address a different problem: finding matching uploads on participating platforms. They cannot search every website or guarantee removal.

The FTC describes StopNCII.org as a free, global service. Its fingerprint is generated on your device, so the original image is not sent to the service for matching. If you are unsure whether the person depicted was under 18 when the image was made, use the minor-safety route and ask NCMEC for guidance rather than uploading or sharing the material yourself.
4. Remove the result from search engines separately
A search engine result and the website that hosts the file are different targets. Google accepts requests for qualifying real or fake intimate imagery appearing in Google services. If the material is on YouTube, Google says to use a separate YouTube form; content involving someone under 18 should be submitted through Google’s Search reporting form.

- Submit Google’s intimate-image removal request with the result URL and the host-page URL when available.
- Report the original post to the hosting site at the same time. Google states that removing a result from Search does not delete the image from the host website.
- After the host removes the page or file, request a Search cache update if an old result or preview remains.
Search removal reduces discoverability; it does not erase copies in private messages, forums, file stores, or other search indexes. Continue using the host’s reporting process for each new location you identify.
5. Treat blackmail and sexual extortion as an escalation
If someone says they will send the image to your contacts, demands money, or demands more images, stop the conversation after preserving the messages. The FTC advises not paying, not sending more material, and not giving account or device access. Block the person after you have captured the identifying information needed for a report.
- Report the extortion to local criminal law enforcement or the FBI.
- Tell a trusted person who can help you avoid responding alone and can accompany you when making a report.
- If the target is a minor, contact NCMEC as well as law enforcement.
- Call emergency services if the threat includes immediate physical danger, stalking, or a person coming to your location.
Extortionists may claim that payment will guarantee deletion. It cannot guarantee that copies will not be retained or shared, and payment often leads to additional demands.

6. Understand possible U.S. civil remedies
The Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women explains that 15 U.S.C. § 6851 creates a federal civil action for sharing intimate images without consent, including through the internet or social media. A claimant generally must show that the defendant shared an intimate image without consent and knew that consent was absent or recklessly disregarded that fact.
Depending on the facts, a court may issue an injunction, award proven financial losses or up to $150,000, and award attorney fees and costs. A court may permit a claimant to proceed under a pseudonym. These are possible remedies, not automatic payments or a prediction of how a particular case will end. The statute has limits and exceptions, including rules concerning commercial pornographic content and certain good-faith disclosures.
The DOJ page is legal information, not legal advice. State laws, filing deadlines, evidence rules, and available claims vary. A lawyer or legal-aid organization in your state can assess the image, the identity and location of the poster, and the harm you experienced.

7. If the deepfake is not intimate
The intimate-image procedures above may not apply to a fake political endorsement, ordinary face-swap, fabricated audio, or another nonsexual manipulation. Report that material under the platform’s impersonation, harassment, privacy, or manipulated-media rules. Preserve the same identifying links and threats, and ask a local lawyer or law-enforcement agency which state or national laws fit your circumstances.
Do not label a non-intimate manipulation as NCII merely to force it into an intimate-image form. The correct reporting category helps the service route it to the team that handles that type of abuse.
8. Get confidential support
You can seek help even if you are not ready to pursue a legal case. The FTC lists the National Domestic Violence Hotline and NCMEC among support options. The DOJ lists the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative (CCRI) Image Abuse Helpline at 844-878-CCRI (844-878-2274), the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-4673, and legal-aid resources.
Support organizations can help you plan reports, safety steps, and conversations with family, school, or an employer. Avoid services that promise guaranteed deletion, demand a large upfront payment before explaining their process, or ask you to send the intimate image by ordinary email or public message.
9. A practical decision path
- Danger now? Contact emergency services; otherwise continue at your pace.
- Image hosted online? Record the URL and identifiers, then report the host. In the U.S., submit the covered-platform request used by the Take It Down Act.
- Adult depicted? Consider StopNCII.org for participating-platform matching. Minor depicted? Use NCMEC’s Take It Down and CyberTipline.
- Search result still visible? File Google’s removal request; remember that Search removal is not host removal.
- Threat or demand? Do not pay or send more material; preserve the messages and report to law enforcement or the FBI.
- Need advice? Contact a survivor-support organization, legal aid, or a lawyer familiar with image-based abuse in your jurisdiction.
These routes can reduce exposure and create an evidence trail, but none guarantees that every copy, account, or privately shared file will disappear. Keep your records private, revisit reports when a new URL appears, and make decisions that protect your safety and control.
