Opening a suspicious email or link does not, by itself, prove your phone was compromised. What matters is what happened next: entering a password or payment details, downloading or installing something, approving a profile or permissions, or giving someone remote access all call for different steps. Stop interacting with the message, then follow the response that matches your exposure.
First, identify what you did
Close the message or page and do not reply, call a number in the email, reopen an attachment, or follow another link from it. Do not revisit the suspicious link to inspect it. If the message might concern a real account, contact the organization through an address or phone number you already know is genuine.
- Only opened the email or link: This alone is not proof of infection. Close the page and do not enter information or download anything. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends verifying messages independently rather than using their links (FTC phishing guidance).
- Entered a password or account details: Secure that account promptly using its official app or website. Change the password anywhere else you reused it.
- Entered payment or identity details: Contact the relevant bank, card issuer, or institution using a trusted contact route.
- Downloaded or installed something, approved a profile or permissions, or granted remote access: Treat this as possible device exposure and use the platform steps below.
If you entered a password or account details
- Use a trusted route to open the service’s official app or type its known web address yourself. If this phone is behaving suspiciously, use another trusted device for sensitive account changes.
- Change the password you entered. If you reused it on other services, change it there too, using a unique password for each account.
- Secure your email account first if it can receive password-reset messages for other accounts.
- Review signed-in devices or sessions and account recovery details. Sign out devices or sessions you do not recognize, and correct recovery information that was changed without your permission.
- Enable two-factor authentication if the service offers it.
For a potentially compromised Google Account, follow Google’s account-security guidance. If you entered Apple Account credentials or personal information on a suspected scam site, Apple advises changing the Apple Account password immediately and ensuring two-factor authentication is enabled (Apple’s social-engineering and phishing guidance).

If you entered payment or identity information
Contact the bank, card issuer, or other relevant institution through a number on your card or statement, or through its official website. Explain what information you shared and ask what protective steps are appropriate. Monitor transactions and follow the institution’s instructions; the right response depends on the information exposed and your location.

If you downloaded a file or app, or approved access
Android
Do not reopen a suspicious file or app. Google recommends checking Google Play Protect, installing Android and security updates, removing apps you do not trust or need, and reviewing your Google Account security. The exact menu names vary by Android version and phone maker.

- Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and select Play Protect. Run a scan and keep Play Protect enabled. Google describes its protections in Google Play Protect help.
- Install available Android and security updates in your phone’s Settings. The update path and labels vary by manufacturer.
- Uninstall apps you do not recognize or no longer trust.
- Review your Google Account using Google’s account-security steps.
A scan is not a guarantee that a phone is clean. If signs of malware persist, Google says you may need to contact the phone’s manufacturer or reset the device; get trusted support if you are unsure how to proceed (Google’s Android malware guidance).

If iOS displays a malware alert identifying an app, follow the alert’s instructions to delete that app. If you installed an unfamiliar configuration profile, review it at Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. Apple cautions that a school- or work-managed iPhone should be handled with its administrator; removing a profile also removes its associated settings and data (Apple’s profile guidance).

On an iPhone with iOS 16 or later, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check to review sharing, connected devices, app access, your passcode, and Apple Account security. Some options may be limited by device-management profiles or Screen Time settings (Apple Safety Check guidance).
If someone had remote access
Stop using the phone for banking or sensitive account changes until trusted support can help, especially if the person can still control the device. Contact the phone maker or a trusted support provider through an independently verified route. The FTC also recommends getting help from the manufacturer or a trusted company when dealing with malware (FTC scam-response guidance).

Report the email safely
Use your email provider’s phishing or report-spam control, and notify any impersonated organization through its official site. Do not use contact details in the suspicious email. Reporting options depend on location:

- Apple impersonation: Apple asks that suspicious emails claiming to be from Apple be forwarded to reportphishing@apple.com.
