If you think a smart-glasses companion app exposed your photos, recordings, or location, first stop new capture and sharing, then secure the linked account from a trusted device. Preserve alerts and account activity before deleting anything. Next, check every place a copy may exist: the glasses, companion app, phone gallery, cloud backup, and services you shared to. A factory reset may erase data on the glasses, but it cannot be assumed to remove copies already transferred elsewhere.

An alert or suspicious setting is not, by itself, proof that someone accessed your data. The right steps depend on the glasses, app, phone, and country involved.

What to do first

  1. Stop further capture and transfer. Turn off the voice assistant, capture, live-sharing, and location features you do not need in the companion app and phone settings. If you cannot find the controls or need to stop activity immediately, disconnect or power down the glasses. Avoid deleting alerts, messages, or account history for now.
  2. Secure the linked account. Using a trusted device, change its password, review active sessions and connected services, remove anything unfamiliar, and enable multifactor authentication if available. These are general account-security steps; controls and labels vary by provider.
  3. Preserve a record. Save the alert or notice, note when you saw it, and capture relevant account activity and support messages. Record the glasses model, app and firmware versions, and any support case numbers. Keep the original notice if possible.
  4. Restrict phone permissions you do not need. In the phone’s app-permission settings, review access to photos, microphone, camera, Bluetooth, and location. Revoke unnecessary access while you investigate. Phone operating systems use different menus and permission names.
  5. Contact the provider. Report the concern to the app maker and glasses manufacturer. Ask what data was accessed or transferred, when it happened, who could access it, where it was stored, and what containment or deletion steps have been completed.

Do not assume that a privacy LED, a permission change, or a password change answers whether data was previously copied. Those controls address different parts of the problem.

Work out which data path may be involved

Photos and recordings can be on the glasses, imported to the phone, backed up to a cloud service, or shared through another app. Location may involve a phone permission, an app feature, or information associated with an account. Check each destination using that service’s own controls; removing a file or permission in one place does not establish that other copies are gone.

Data remains on the glasses Review the glasses and companion app for captures, recordings, and device connection status. Stop capture and transfer. Consider the model’s reset instructions only after preserving evidence and securing the account.
Media was imported to the phone Check the phone’s photo gallery and any photo-backup service. Use the phone or backup service’s deletion and sharing controls separately.
Media or information was shared onward Review the destination app, messages, posts, links, or connected services you used to share it. Remove the item or revoke its sharing access through that destination’s controls.
Account access may be involved Look for unfamiliar sessions, connected services, or account activity; ask the provider to investigate. Change the password, end unfamiliar sessions, remove unknown connections, and enable multifactor authentication if available.
Location access may be involved Review the companion app’s location permission and any location-based features you enabled. Revoke location access or disable the feature while you assess whether it is needed.

What the product-specific guidance says

Meta AI and Ray-Ban Meta

Meta says photos and videos captured in its AI-glasses gallery stay on the glasses until the user chooses to import them; after import, they are stored in the phone’s photo gallery. Meta also says users choose whether to share captures with Meta AI or another destination. These are Meta’s descriptions of its own product, not independent verification of an app’s security or a rule for every brand.

Meta says taking a photo or recording gallery video activates the capture LED, and its July 2026 FAQ says the LED cannot be switched off. Its responsible-innovation page says capture, voice, and notification preferences can be managed in the Meta AI app, and that voice recordings can be deleted. Meta says deleted information will not be used for future training. Check the current app and model instructions before relying on a particular control.

Ray-Ban’s US FAQ says Ray-Ban Meta glasses pair with one Meta account at a time and that a factory reset permanently erases captures on the glasses and the association between the glasses and the Meta account. The same FAQ says “always allow” location permission is required for location-based real-time voice questions such as weather. Those details are specific to that product and app guidance; they do not mean a reset deletes phone-gallery or cloud copies.

HeyCyan and other lower-cost glasses

On 7 October 2026, Australia’s Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) announced it had opened an investigation into Shenzhen Qingcheng Future Technology Co. Ltd, maker of the HeyCyan app used with some smart glasses. The OAIC said it had asked manufacturers and distributors how devices record information, who can access it, and where it is stored; it also said Shenzhen Qingcheng had not responded to preliminary inquiries. The OAIC identified Anko glasses sold by Kmart and lower-cost models sold through Big W Marketplace, Amazon, and other retailers as using HeyCyan.

This is an ongoing investigation, not a finding that a particular user’s data was exposed. Australian Privacy Commissioner Carly Kind said: “In the absence of any response from Shenzhen Qingcheng to the OAIC’s preliminary inquiries, I have no assurance that it is protecting personal data of Australians as required by the Privacy Act.” Her statement concerns the company’s non-response, not an individual exposure determination.

Other investigations and earlier regulator engagement

The Texas Attorney General has announced an investigation into concerns about Meta’s privacy representations and possible exposure of private data, recordings, and facial geometry. An announced investigation is not a concluded finding of fact or law.

The Irish Data Protection Commission’s 2023 Annual Report records earlier engagement with Meta about notice to people captured by Ray-Ban smart glasses. The report says changes included making the external privacy LED more than twice as large, adding a blinking pattern, adding controls against accidental recording triggers, and measures against tampering or unauthorized use. That is historical regulator-attributed context; it does not establish what happened in a separate current incident.

When to reset the glasses—and what a reset can miss

Reset only after you have preserved relevant evidence and contained account access, unless you need to disconnect the device promptly. Follow the exact instructions for your model. A reset may remove local captures or account associations as described by the manufacturer, but do not treat it as a remote deletion of imported media, cloud backups, messages, or shared files. Review those destinations separately.

If another person may have access to the glasses, disconnect or power them down while you secure the account and determine the appropriate reset procedure. A reset is a device-control step, not an investigation into whether data was previously accessed.

Where to report the concern

Start with the app provider and device vendor, using their official support or privacy contact channels. Include the model, app version, dates, screenshots or saved notices, and a clear description of what you observed. Ask for a case number and a written explanation of the data involved, access or transfer dates, recipients or storage locations, and steps taken to stop access and delete affected copies.

If the provider cannot explain what happened, does not respond, or sensitive information may be involved, consider contacting the privacy regulator responsible for your location. The correct regulator, reporting process, and any notification duties depend on your jurisdiction; the OAIC investigation concerns Australia and does not determine the right channel for everyone.
