If a Samsung Galaxy update fails, choose the fix based on where it stopped: resume an interrupted download from its notification, make room if installation reports low storage, check carrier availability if the update is missing, or try Samsung Smart Switch when an over-the-air update repeatedly fails. If the device no longer boots normally after the failure, stop retrying and contact Samsung service.
First, identify what failed
Open Settings and look for Software update or, on some devices, System updates. Menu names vary by model and software version. Samsung’s failed-update guide separates an interrupted download, an installation blocked by storage, an update that is not offered, and a device that will not boot; each calls for a different response.
If the update is missing
A missing update is not necessarily a failed download. Samsung says availability can depend on the carrier that originally supplied the device, and newly released updates may arrive in waves. Check with that original carrier and try again later if the rollout is still underway.
- Connect to Wi-Fi if your carrier requires it for updates.
- If the phone is unlocked but associated with an original carrier, check whether that carrier requires its SIM to be installed.
- Connect the phone to a computer running Samsung Smart Switch; it may show an available update there.
These carrier and SIM conditions are not universal. Check the rules for the device and carrier involved. Samsung Philippines also notes that update menu labels can vary by model and software version in its Galaxy update guide.

If the download stopped or failed
Resume an incomplete download
Look for the update notification and tap it to resume. Samsung says an update that did not completely download can be resumed from the notification.
Try a stable connection
If the download fails repeatedly, use a stable connection; Samsung’s regional troubleshooting recommends Wi-Fi for more reliable updates. If the phone’s update process continues to fail, use Smart Switch on a computer as an alternative.

If installation says there is not enough storage
Free space on the phone by removing files or apps you no longer need, then retry the update. Samsung says the device will indicate how much space it needs; there is no single storage requirement that applies to every Galaxy model and update. Samsung Gulf also describes using Device Care’s storage cleanup in its software-update troubleshooting guide.
Use Smart Switch when phone updates keep failing
Samsung Smart Switch provides an alternate update route. You need a compatible computer and a working USB data connection. Connect the phone, open Smart Switch, and follow any update prompt it presents. If the connection or update does not work, troubleshoot the computer link before trying again.

- Check for updates on the computer, then restart it.
- If Smart Switch still fails, uninstall and reinstall the program.
- On the phone, set the USB connection to Transferring files / Android Auto.
- Try another USB port and, if needed, another cable that supports data transfer and fits the phone’s connector.
- If the connection still fails, test with another computer.
Samsung notes that a Verizon phone’s system-update USB mode is intended for Verizon’s upgrade assistant and is not compatible with Smart Switch. During an update, do not disconnect the USB cable or use the device. The phone may restart several times.

If the phone or tablet cannot boot normally after an update failure, Samsung says service is required to reflash the device. Contact Samsung service or the applicable carrier/manufacturer repair route. Do not treat routine update retries as a fix for a device that will not boot, or use unofficial firmware files or flashing tools.
