First identify what is blocked: adding funds, opening a new position, closing an existing one, or accessing a particular contract because of your location. Those are different problems. Read the app’s exact notice, check the contract’s current availability for your state and location, and follow the platform’s support process rather than trying to disguise where you are.
Identify what the app is blocking
A deposit failure does not necessarily mean your state is prohibited from trading. Likewise, a location warning, a close-only restriction, and an unavailable contract can have different causes. Note the exact message and whether it appears when you add funds, select a contract, place an opening order, or try to close a position.
On Robinhood, event-contract access requires separate derivatives approval; approval for an ordinary brokerage account does not by itself establish eligibility for event contracts. Its event-contract support page lists possible causes including state, account, employment, market-hours, counterparty, and app-version issues. These details describe Robinhood, not every prediction-market app.

What to check for a location or state restriction
Check where you are and what state is on your account
Some restrictions can depend on your physical location at the time you use the app, not just your residence. Robinhood says its location warning may appear if you are physically in a restricted state while residing elsewhere, if the state on your account does not match your current location, or if you are near a state line. Confirm your account address and current location, then use the platform’s support process if the warning seems wrong. Do not conceal your location to get around a restriction.

Check the specific contract, not just the app
Availability can vary by state and contract category, and it can change as litigation or court orders develop. Robinhood’s overview says availability depends on the state and contract. As reported on its page, Maryland and Nevada residents cannot trade sports event contracts, and Michigan residents cannot open new sports contracts as of September 9, 2026. This is not a complete nationwide availability list or a guarantee that other contract categories are accessible.
The Nevada Gaming Control Board’s litigation timeline records court and enforcement actions through June 2026. Robinhood’s June 2026 SEC filing describes ongoing state litigation, injunctions, and appeals, and notes that state-by-state availability may change. Check the app’s current notice for the particular contract rather than relying on an old list or a broad claim that a platform is available nationwide.

If you can close a position but cannot open one
Robinhood calls this “position closing only” (PCO): you may close an existing event-contract position, but you cannot open a new one. Robinhood lists an open margin call, an account eligibility or compliance review, and a detected change in eligibility as possible triggers. Check in-app notifications for the reason and any step the platform requires. A close-only restriction is not the same as permission to start another trade.

Separate a funding problem from a trading or location restriction. For Robinhood event contracts, instant ACH deposits are not available. Robinhood defines buying power for event contracts as settled cash available for new contracts, so check your settled balance and the app’s funding instructions instead of assuming a pending deposit can be used immediately.

Also note whether the problem occurs only when placing an order. Robinhood says market closure or lack of an available counterparty can prevent trading or closing orders. These are platform-specific explanations; other apps may have different funding rules and notices.
Use a focused troubleshooting sequence
- Read the exact notice. Record the wording and the action that triggered it: funding, opening, closing, or viewing a contract.
- Check account eligibility. Confirm that you have the product-specific approval the app requires and look for account, employment, compliance, or margin notifications.
- Check location and contract availability. Verify your account state and current physical location, then check the live notice for that contract category.
- Check funding and market conditions. Review settled buying power, deposit status, market hours, and any message about counterparties.
- Update the app and contact official support. If the notice conflicts with your circumstances or does not explain what to do, use the platform’s support channel. Do not use location-spoofing tools or other workarounds to evade a restriction.
When comparing prediction-market apps
Do not assume another app permits the same contract just because one platform blocks it. Compare the same contract category and verify each service’s current rules.

- State availability for the specific contract category.
- Whether eligibility depends on physical location, residence, or both.
- Separate account approval or other eligibility requirements.
- Funding rules, including whether funds must be settled before use.
- Whether existing positions can still be closed during a restriction.
- How clearly the app explains the restriction and directs users to support.
