If a Matter update in Apple Home appears stuck, first note its exact status and check whether the accessory still responds. Then check the manufacturer’s app and model-specific instructions before trying low-risk connectivity steps. Apple’s developer guide describes “Requested” as a wait for the home hub to transfer firmware; that status alone does not show that the accessory is broken or needs a reset.
What “Requested” means in Apple Home
Apple’s developer-oriented Apple Matter OTA User Guide describes the manual update sequence as Update → Requested → Installing. In that workflow, “Requested” means the home hub is waiting to transfer firmware to the accessory. Apple says the connected primary home hub acts as the OTA provider, supplying firmware to the accessory.
This explains the status, but it is not a universal consumer deadline or diagnosis. The guide’s timing estimates—notification within 24 hours and a recommendation to allow up to 48 hours for installation—apply to its TestNet developer testing workflow using the default OTA requestor, not to every Matter update in a household. Apple does not publish a universal cutoff for when a consumer update should be considered stuck.
Work through these checks in order
- Record the details. Note the exact Home app status, accessory maker and model, firmware version if visible, and whether the device responds in Apple Home and the manufacturer’s app. A status that has not changed immediately does not by itself establish a fault.
- Check the maker’s update instructions. Open the manufacturer’s app and consult the manual or support page for the exact model. Apple Support recommends checking the maker’s app for firmware needs and points users to the manufacturer for accessory-specific instructions. If the maker says to update in Apple Home, use that route; if it specifies its own app, follow that instead. Matter certification alone does not tell you which update route or recovery procedure a particular model uses.
- Check basic communication if the accessory is unresponsive. Apple recommends enabling Bluetooth on the controlling iPhone, iPad, or Mac, then restarting the affected accessory. Check whether it responds after each step. Apple’s consumer guidance is aimed at accessories that are not responding; these are connectivity checks, not a guaranteed repair for an OTA transfer.
- Check the hub and network if symptoms point to a shared problem. If the accessory or several accessories are unresponsive, Apple recommends restarting third-party bridges and home hubs. For broader failures, its troubleshooting also includes checking that the controlling device is on the same Wi-Fi network, restarting the router and hubs, and reviewing VPN or third-party security software that could affect connectivity. These steps are not necessary for every firmware transfer.
- Give Thread devices time to rejoin. For third-party Thread accessories in Apple’s unresponsive-accessory procedure, disconnect power for five minutes, reconnect, then wait ten minutes for Thread to stabilise. Those times are part of Apple Support’s specific troubleshooting steps, not a general Matter update timer.
- Use reset or removal only with model-specific guidance. If the device also fails in the manufacturer’s app, or you need to remove and add it again, follow the maker’s exact reset and re-add instructions. A reset can mean setting up the accessory again, and Apple does not recommend it as a routine response to a slow update indicator.
Decide whether the issue is one accessory or several
Only one accessory is affected
Start with that manufacturer’s app and instructions, then restart the accessory if it is unresponsive. If the device depends on a third-party bridge, check that bridge as well. Contact the accessory maker if its own app cannot update or control the device, or if its model-specific recovery instructions are unclear.

- [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The M3 is a versatile hub supporting Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices. It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. Supports advanced Matter bridge functionality, enabling Aqara-exclusive scenes and signals to sync with Matter ecosystems such as Home Assistant for seamless integration. Supports up to 127 Aqara Zigbee devices (** Not third-party Zigbee devices) and 127 Thread devices (Repeaters are needed).
- [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
- [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
- [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the smart home hub M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
- [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.
Devices from several makers are affected
Look for a shared Home hub, controlling-device, or network problem rather than assuming every accessory has the same firmware issue. Apple’s consumer checklist includes updating the controlling Apple device, closing and reopening Home, confirming the same Wi-Fi connection, checking Bluetooth, restarting accessories and hubs or router, and reviewing VPN or security software that might interfere with connectivity.

Contact the accessory manufacturer first when one brand or model is affected. Include the model, firmware version if available, the exact status shown in Home, whether the accessory responds in the maker’s app, whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread if known, and the steps already tried. Apple advises contacting the manufacturer when an accessory remains unresponsive. If accessories from multiple manufacturers fail together after shared connectivity checks, contact Apple Support.
