If something you bought on sale gets cheaper, first check whether the retailer offers a post-purchase price adjustment for that exact item and transaction. If it does not, see whether you can return it and buy it again—but compare the possible savings with return costs, stock and sale availability, and the return deadline. A holiday return extension does not automatically extend the deadline for requesting a price adjustment.
What to do when an item’s price drops after you buy it
- Identify the seller and purchase details. Check your receipt or order page for the seller, purchase date, item and model, and whether you bought online or in a store. A marketplace seller may have different terms from the retailer hosting the listing.
- Look for a post-purchase adjustment policy. Check the retailer’s current terms for an adjustment after purchase—not just its policy for matching a competitor’s price. Note the deadline and whether the lower offer qualifies. Product versions, seller, channel, and promotions such as clearance, bundles, member-only offers, or limited-quantity sales can affect eligibility.
- Save proof of the lower price. Keep your receipt or order confirmation and capture the current offer with the seller, item identity, date, and any conditions visible. The FTC’s holiday shopping guidance recommends keeping transaction details and asking about return policies. Its 2008 pamphlet is general consumer guidance, not a current legal rule or a statement of any retailer’s present terms.
- Ask through the retailer’s stated channel. Provide the order number, original price, current price, and evidence. Ask whether the item qualifies and whether the difference would be returned to your original payment method.
- If the retailer declines, check return terms before acting. Compare the potential savings with return shipping, restocking fees, the chance the new offer ends or sells out, and the effort of placing another order. Confirm the return requirements before sending an item back.
- Check your payment card’s current benefits. Read the benefits guide for the card you used or contact the issuer to ask about price protection. Coverage is not established here for any particular issuer, so do not assume reimbursement is available.
How retailer policies differ
These U.S. examples reflect retailer pages checked October 7, 2026. Policies can change; check the linked live terms and your item’s order page before relying on them.

Keep price adjustments and return windows separate
A return deadline tells you how long you may return an item under the applicable terms; it does not guarantee that the retailer will refund a price difference during that period. Walmart’s published policy generally gives 90 days for most items, with exceptions. Most items bought in store or online from October 1 through December 31 are returnable until January 31, but item exceptions and Marketplace seller participation vary. That seasonal return extension is not a price-adjustment promise. Check the Walmart return-policy page, the seller’s terms, and your order page for the item’s specific eligibility.

What to compare before returning and rebuying
- Potential savings: Calculate the difference between what you paid and the current qualifying offer.
- Return costs: Check shipping, restocking charges, and any other fees before deciding.
- Offer and stock risk: The lower price or item may no longer be available by the time the return and replacement order are complete.
- Eligibility and conditions: Verify that the replacement is the same item and condition, and check seller, channel, and promotion restrictions.
- Timing: Confirm both the price-adjustment deadline and the return deadline. They may be different.
