Stop applying the serum for now and check its label. If it contains topical minoxidil, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises stopping and seeing a dermatologist when scalp irritation causes dryness, scaling, itching, or redness. Advice for minoxidil does not automatically apply to every hair-growth serum.
What to do first
- Pause the suspected serum. Do not apply more to an irritated scalp while you work out what to do next.
- Check the exact product label. Note its active ingredient, inactive ingredients, directions, and warnings. Keep the packaging or save a clear photo of the ingredient list to show a clinician or pharmacist.
- If it contains minoxidil, stop and contact a dermatologist. AAD specifically recommends stopping minoxidil and seeing a dermatologist if the scalp becomes irritated, dry, scaly, itchy, or red. Read the AAD guidance.
- Follow the product’s own warnings. If symptoms are persistent, significant, or worsening, seek clinical advice. For severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, seek urgent local medical care.
When minoxidil is involved
Scalp irritation and itch are recognized possible effects of topical minoxidil. One official DailyMed minoxidil foam label says to stop use and ask a doctor for scalp irritation or redness. The same label lists chest pain, rapid heartbeat, faintness or dizziness, sudden unexplained weight gain, and swelling of the hands or feet as reasons to stop and ask a doctor. These are warnings from that specific label, not a guarantee that every minoxidil product has identical wording; check the package in hand. See the DailyMed foam label.
Do not keep using minoxidil through irritation just to preserve its hair-growth benefit. AAD notes that the benefit is lost over time after stopping. Discuss the scalp reaction and next steps with a dermatologist rather than restarting, changing the dose, or switching formulations on your own. Read the AAD guidance on male-pattern hair loss.
Could switching from solution to foam help?
AAD says a newer minoxidil foam formulation seems to reduce the risk of scalp irritation compared with solution. That is a relative observation, not a promise that foam will prevent symptoms or establish what caused your reaction. Ask a clinician or pharmacist whether another formulation is appropriate before trying it, and do not test multiple products on an actively irritated scalp.

What if the serum is not minoxidil?
The right response depends on the product. Itching or flaking alone cannot identify which ingredient caused the problem or establish that the cause is an allergy, contact dermatitis, dandruff, or another scalp condition. Pause the suspected serum, keep its ingredient list, and seek professional advice if the reaction persists or concerns you. A dermatologist can examine the scalp and help assess whether the product or something else is responsible.

- The exact product name and its active and inactive ingredients.
- When you started using it and when the itching or flaking began.
- Whether you noticed redness, dryness, scaling, or other symptoms.
- Whether to avoid the product, consider a different formulation, or have the scalp assessed for another cause.
