If a fake social profile is pretending to be you or contacting your partner, save evidence first, report the profile and any harmful content through the platform’s official channels, and warn people who may be targeted. Secure your own account if you suspect it was hacked. If the profile is threatening, extorting, stalking, or seeking money through a false romantic identity, prioritize safety and contact the appropriate local authorities or fraud-reporting service. A report does not guarantee removal.
1. Save useful evidence before blocking or reporting
Document what you can while the profile and messages are still available. This is practical guidance, not a platform-mandated evidence checklist.
- Record the account’s username and profile URL.
- Take screenshots of the profile, relevant posts, and messages, including the dates you observed them.
- Keep messages that show impersonation, threats, requests for money, or attempts to contact your partner. Preserve originals where possible and avoid editing them.
Do not reply to the fake account or repost private information about the person you suspect is behind it. If you need to limit contact, capture the evidence first, then block or restrict the account.

Choose the reporting route that matches the problem: an account impersonating someone is not always handled the same way as a particular post or message. Use the platform’s official app, website, or Help Center—not links sent by the fake account.
#1 Best Overall
| Platform | How to report | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| X | The impersonated person or an authorized representative can file an impersonation report through the X Help Center. A bystander can report from the account’s profile; X says an X account is not required for that route. | X says impersonation violates its rules. It investigates valid reports, and a violating account may be suspended or asked to update its profile. Reporting a specific post is separate from reporting an account, so use the route that fits the issue. These are possible outcomes, not a guaranteed takedown or timeline. |
| TikTok | From the profile in the app or browser, choose Report, Report account, and Pretending to Be Someone, then identify the person being impersonated. TikTok also provides online forms. | TikTok lists a US form that requests valid identification and a separate form flow for people outside the US. Follow the current prompts for your country; do not send identification through unofficial accounts or links. |
| Messenger | Open the conversation’s Privacy & support menu, report it, then choose the impersonation category and the person being impersonated. For a Facebook profile, follow Facebook’s reporting instructions. | This Messenger route is for reporting from a conversation. Facebook profile reporting is a separate flow. |
| Use Instagram’s current in-app Help or Report flow, or consult the Meta Help Center. | Menu labels and reporting steps can change; follow the current prompts shown in the official service. |
3. Warn people who may be contacted
If the fake profile is messaging friends, family, or your partner, send a brief warning through a channel you already trust. Name the fake username, say clearly that the account is not yours, and ask recipients not to reply, click links, send money, or share private information. If it is safe, point them to your real account. Avoid publicly accusing a suspected person unless you have reliable evidence and a clear reason to do so.
4. Check whether your real account is compromised
Impersonation and account takeover are different problems. If you can still access your real account, review its security settings, change to a unique password, and enable an available two-factor authentication method or security key. Facebook lists login alerts, two-factor authentication, and security keys as account-security tools; a security key can strengthen account access but does not identify fake profiles or remove them.
If you have lost access to Facebook or see signs of a takeover, use Facebook’s hacked-account recovery route. Facebook recommends doing this from a device you have used to log in before. Use the official recovery process for whichever service is affected.
5. Treat romantic and financial manipulation as a separate risk
A fake profile that builds trust while seeking money or control may be part of a romance scam. The FBI describes romance scams as cases in which a criminal uses a fake online identity to gain a victim’s affection and trust. A fake profile contacting a couple is not, by itself, proof of a scam, but requests for money or sensitive material deserve caution.
- Do not send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, banking details, identity documents, or intimate material to someone whose identity you cannot verify.
- The FBI recommends researching the person’s image and profile details. In the United States, report suspected romance scams to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
- Meta’s February 2025 safety post describes romance-scam networks using military and celebrity impersonation and fake matchmaking schemes. That context does not mean every fake profile targeting a relationship is a scam.
6. Block, review the report, and escalate when necessary
Use blocking as one boundary, not a guarantee
Blocking can reduce unwanted contact. Facebook notes that some content may remain visible and that a block does not automatically cover additional profiles the same person creates. If another profile appears, document and report it separately.
Check a Facebook report’s status
For reported Facebook content, the Support Inbox shows the decision and may offer a second review. Facebook says that review is usually completed within 24 hours. That timing applies to the described Facebook review process, not every platform or impersonation report.
Get help for threats, extortion, stalking, or danger
Preserve the relevant messages and prioritize your safety. If there is immediate danger, contact local emergency services. For credible threats, extortion, or stalking, seek help from local law enforcement or an appropriate local support service. The right response depends on your location and circumstances.
