First, save evidence of where your profile or photos appeared. Then check the app’s privacy notice and visibility controls, ask the company what it shared and whether it can restrict or delete the material, and escalate if needed. The right route depends on whether this is ordinary profile visibility, a suspected broken privacy promise, or a nonconsensual intimate image—and on where you live.
1. Document what happened before changing settings
Record the app, the dates, which profile fields or photos were involved, where they appeared, and how you found out. Save screenshots, notifications, messages, URLs, and copies of the relevant privacy notice and settings pages. Keep the evidence private; do not repost or forward intimate material.
Preserving this information first can help you describe the issue accurately to the app or a regulator. It also gives you a record of the notice and controls that applied when you discovered the disclosure.

2. Check the app’s privacy notice and visibility controls
Review the current privacy notice and in-app settings. Look for who collects your information, why it is used, whether it is shared with other organisations, and whether a profile field is visible to other members or included in shareable content. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) says a privacy notice should explain who collects information, what it will be used for, and whether it will be shared; if the purpose is unclear, ask the company for details: ICO online safety guidance.

Visibility can extend beyond the profile page, depending on the service. For example, Tinder’s international Privacy Policy says information members voluntarily put on a public profile is visible to other members and may appear in Tinder communications, such as a profile snapshot sent in an email or notification to a potential match. That is Tinder’s policy language, not a rule for every dating app. Check the policy for the service you use.
Before closing an account, read what the app says about deletion and retention. Tinder’s policy says account closure and data deletion follow the terms set out in that policy. Do not assume that closing an account immediately removes every record or copy.

3. Contact the app with a precise request
Use the service’s privacy, support, report, or account controls. State what appeared, where you saw it, and when. Ask the company to explain:
- What information or images were shared.
- Who received them, or what categories of recipients received them.
- For what purpose and under which policy provision.
- Whether the company can restrict further sharing or remove the material, and what deletion or retention limits apply.
Ask for confirmation of how the company handled your request, and keep its reply and any case number. If you are unsure what a notice means, ask the company to clarify rather than relying on a general policy description.

4. Choose an escalation route that fits the problem

United States: report a suspected broken privacy promise
The FTC accepts reports about fraud and bad business practices. It has also pursued allegations involving a dating service’s privacy promises. In a March 30, 2026 announcement, the FTC alleged that OkCupid gave an unrelated third party access to user data, including photos and location information, contrary to its privacy promises. The announcement described nearly three million user photos; that is an allegation about photos, not a count of unique affected people or a finding of liability. The FTC’s OkCupid/Match case page listed the matter as pending when reviewed. See the FTC announcement for the allegations and proposed action.
This case shows the FTC can act on alleged privacy-promise violations; it does not mean every unexpected disclosure is unlawful or that an FTC report will secure removal for an individual. The FTC’s online dating guidance and consumer privacy resources provide further context.

Outside the United States: find the local regulator
Contact the data-protection or consumer-protection regulator for your jurisdiction if the app’s answer does not resolve the concern. The ICO guidance linked above is for the UK; it should not be treated as a worldwide complaint process. The rights and steps available to you depend on your location.
5. Use the intimate-image process only if it applies
If someone shared an intimate image of you without consent, and you are in the United States, check whether the content and service qualify for the Take It Down Act process. The FTC says covered platforms must remove a reported image and known identical copies within 48 hours after receiving a valid request. Its guidance says the relevant provision took effect on May 19, 2026, and covers qualifying intimate imagery, including real images and digital forgeries. The 48-hour period is not a general removal deadline for ordinary dating profile photos, nor does the guidance establish that every platform or image is covered. Use the platform’s designated process and check whether your situation meets the law’s requirements.
