After losing a job in the U.S., file for unemployment through the state where you worked, make a near-term cash plan, and protect your housing and health coverage. Then check your final pay and severance, preserve important records, and use local workforce services. Benefits and deadlines vary by state and plan, so confirm details with the agencies and administrators responsible for your situation.

What should I do first after losing my job?

Handle urgent income, bills, and coverage in parallel rather than waiting to finish one task before starting another. A first unemployment payment may take weeks, and health coverage choices can have deadlines.

  1. Apply for unemployment promptly. File with the unemployment insurance agency in the state where you worked. The U.S. Department of Labor advises contacting the state program as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. Submit accurate employment and separation details, then follow the state’s instructions for continuing claims and job searches.
  2. Map your cash and due dates. List cash on hand, expected final pay, severance, any likely unemployment benefits, essential expenses, debts, and payment dates. Use the CFPB’s Unexpected job loss tools to organize cash flow and prioritize bills.
  3. Contact housing providers and creditors before a missed payment if possible. Ask what affordable arrangements or fee relief may be available, and what they would cost. Review automatic withdrawals and pause or cancel recurring expenses where practical to reduce overdraft risk.
  4. Find out when employer health coverage ends. Compare continuation coverage, a spouse’s or other eligible employer plan, Marketplace coverage, and Medicaid or CHIP if eligible. Track election and enrollment deadlines while comparing.
  5. Keep records and check final pay. Save separation notices, pay statements, benefit notices, retirement-plan information, and written communications. Review severance terms carefully and ask questions before accepting terms with lasting effects.
  6. Connect with public job-search help. Ask whether your area has a Rapid Response session and locate an American Job Center. Begin updating your resume, contacting references, and setting a manageable routine for applications and networking.

The DOL says the first unemployment payment generally takes two to three weeks after filing. This is a general estimate, not a guarantee; timing and eligibility decisions are handled by state agencies. See How Do I File for Unemployment Insurance?

How do I apply for unemployment?

Use the unemployment insurance program for the state where you worked, not a federal application. State agencies decide eligibility; common considerations include whether you lost work through no fault of your own and whether you had sufficient work or wages. Apply even if you are unsure you qualify, provide complete and accurate details, and respond to requests from the agency.

After filing, keep certifying or submitting continuing claims as the state requires, and follow its job-search and reporting rules. Missing a required certification or deadline can affect benefits. Check the state agency’s official instructions for the current process, documents, and rules that apply to you.

How do I pay rent or my mortgage while unemployed?

Prioritize bills by the consequence of not paying, their due dates, available relief, and the cost of any arrangement—not by which creditor contacts you most often. Housing, utilities, food, transportation, and essential medical needs may have immediate consequences if disrupted.

If you have a mortgage

Call your mortgage servicer as soon as you think a payment may be at risk. Explain the income change and ask which options may apply, what documentation is required, and how any option affects fees, interest, or repayment. The CFPB’s job-loss guidance includes steps for managing housing and bills.

If you rent

Check local rental assistance programs and contact your landlord early to discuss your circumstances and possible arrangements. Availability and eligibility for assistance depend on location and program rules; verify them with local agencies.

For other bills and debts

Contact lenders and service providers before a payment is missed where possible. Ask about payment plans, hardship options, and fee relief, and confirm the full cost and terms before agreeing. Review automatic payments so a scheduled withdrawal does not create an overdraft when funds are limited.

How do I keep health insurance after losing my job?

First confirm the date your employer coverage ends. Then compare the available options by effective date and continuity, monthly premium, deductible and out-of-pocket exposure, provider and prescription access, and the deadline to enroll or elect coverage. The lowest monthly premium is not necessarily the lowest-cost or most usable option for your household.

Option What to check Deadline or timing
COBRA continuation coverage It can let eligible people continue their former employer plan, but usually requires paying the full premium, sometimes with an administrative charge. Compare total cost and provider access. The DOL describes a typical 60-day election period, measured from the later of the date coverage ends or the date the election notice is received. After job loss, continuation commonly lasts up to 18 months, subject to eligibility and exceptions. See COBRA Continuation Coverage.
Another employer plan Check eligibility through a spouse or another employer plan, its effective date, premiums, cost sharing, and whether your providers and prescriptions are covered. The DOL says the request period for special enrollment after losing eligibility for other employment-based coverage is generally 30 days. Confirm the plan’s requirements and deadline. See Protecting Retirement and Health Benefits After Job Loss.
Marketplace coverage Compare available plans for effective date, total costs, providers, and prescriptions. Eligibility and enrollment depend on your circumstances. Check current enrollment rules and dates through the Marketplace; do not assume another option’s deadline applies.
Medicaid or CHIP Check whether you or eligible family members qualify based on your circumstances and state rules. Eligibility and enrollment are state-specific; verify with the relevant program.

Do not let a comparison delay action past an election or enrollment deadline. The DOL’s Termination overview also summarizes health-benefit and unemployment topics associated with job loss.

What should I check about final pay, severance, and retirement benefits?

Keep copies of your separation notice, recent pay statements, benefit notices, retirement account information, and communications with your employer. Having these records together can help when filing claims, confirming coverage dates, and resolving pay or benefit questions.

Federal law does not require an immediate final paycheck. State rules may require earlier payment; if your regular payday passes without payment, contact the U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division or your state labor department. The DOL explains the federal rule and where to seek help in Last Paycheck.

Read severance terms carefully and ask about unclear provisions before making decisions with lasting effects. For retirement accounts, keep plan statements and contact the plan administrator about your options; the DOL’s benefits guidance covers steps to take after job loss.

Where can I get help with the job search?

Ask your state about Rapid Response services and find an American Job Center. Depending on your location and circumstances, services may include career counseling, job-search assistance, resume preparation, interview workshops, and information about training. These public services can help you get started without paying for a job-search service. See the DOL’s For Workers page for information on worker support.

Set a sustainable routine: update your resume, contact references, identify suitable roles, and schedule time for applications and networking. Follow any job-search requirements attached to unemployment benefits separately; state rules determine what counts and how to document it.
