Contact your bank or card issuer immediately through its official app, website, the number on your card, or a recent statement. Explain exactly what was exposed and whether you see unfamiliar activity. Ask whether to lock or replace the card, secure the account, and dispute any unauthorized transaction. Then secure exposed login credentials, watch the account, and take identity-recovery steps if personal information such as your Social Security number was involved.
What should I do if my bank account information was exposed?
Act promptly, even if you do not yet see a fraudulent transaction. Use a contact method you find independently—not a phone number, link, or reply address in an unexpected message. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises consumers facing suspicious calls to use the bank’s official app or website to contact its fraud department.
- Contact the financial institution. Call the number on your card or a recent statement, or sign in through the official app or website. Say whether the exposed information was a card number, bank account or routing details, online login, or verification code. Ask what action fits the exposure: locking or replacing a card, securing online access, or taking other account-specific steps. An account number cannot necessarily be changed through the same process as a card number; follow the institution’s instructions.
- Report unfamiliar activity as unauthorized. Identify the transaction as an unauthorized charge, debit, withdrawal, or transfer, as applicable. Ask how to dispute it, what deadlines apply, and what documents the institution needs. Do not assume that reporting automatically means a refund; the institution may need to investigate.
- Keep a record. Write down when you noticed the exposure, when you contacted the institution, the names of people you spoke with, and any case or confirmation numbers. Save relevant messages and statements, and keep copies of written dispute communications. The FTC recommends following up in writing about lost or stolen cards and retaining copies.
- Check the account and linked activity. Review recent transactions and continue checking statements for new ones. Ask whether any linked account needs attention, and report unfamiliar activity immediately.
For US consumers, protections depend on the type of account and what happened. A card stolen and used without permission is not necessarily the same situation as someone being tricked into initiating a transfer. The FTC warns that bank accounts have different and fewer protections than credit cards, and that a person who is scammed into moving money may not get it back. Contact the institution right away and ask how its process applies to your specific transaction.

Call the issuer using the number on the card or statement, or use its official app or website. Ask whether the card should be locked or canceled and replaced, and report any charge you did not make as unauthorized. Keep monitoring the account while the issuer handles the report.

FTC guidance says liability for certain unauthorized credit-card use is limited to $50 under the described federal billing-error rules. That figure is not a promise that every disputed charge will be refunded automatically; report the charge promptly and ask the issuer how to dispute it. See the FTC’s credit-card dispute guidance.
What do I do if someone used my debit card?
Report the unauthorized purchase, withdrawal, or transfer to the bank immediately. For a lost or stolen debit or ATM card, FTC guidance describes different potential liability depending on when the loss is reported:

These are FTC-stated US rules for a lost or stolen card scenario, not a blanket guarantee for every exposed account number, bank scam, or transfer. Report the problem as soon as you learn of it and ask the bank how the rules apply to your circumstances. The FTC’s lost or stolen card guidance explains the reporting windows.
What if my online banking password or verification code was exposed?
If you can still sign in
- Change the exposed password through the institution’s official app or website. Change it anywhere else you reused it, especially on email accounts that could be used to reset banking access.
- Turn on two-factor authentication if the institution offers it.
- Review account activity and account settings for changes you did not make.
If you cannot sign in
Use the institution’s official account-recovery route or contact it through a trusted channel. Do not follow a recovery link from an unexpected text, email, or caller unless you have independently verified it with the institution.

Never give a caller a verification code. The FTC’s bank-scam guidance says, “Never share a verification code. Ever.” A code can let someone access an account or approve an action; a legitimate support conversation does not make it safe to disclose one.
How can I tell if a follow-up call is a scam?
After an exposure, a scammer may call claiming to be from your bank and may know some personal details. If a caller pressures you to act, asks for a verification code, or tells you to move money to a supposedly safe account, end the call. Reach the bank yourself through its official app or website, or call the number on your card or statement. Do not transfer money at a caller’s direction.

What if Social Security or other identity information was exposed?
If the incident included a Social Security number or other personal information that could be used to impersonate you, use IdentityTheft.gov for a tailored identity-theft recovery plan. Review your credit reports for unfamiliar activity. The FTC says a free one-year fraud alert is available by contacting one of the credit bureaus; consider whether that measure fits your situation. Payment-card exposure alone does not establish that your broader identity has been stolen.

Does the right response depend on what was exposed?
| What may have been exposed | First response |
|---|---|
| Credit-card number | Contact the issuer, ask about locking or replacing the card, and report unauthorized charges. |
| Debit/ATM card or bank account details | Contact the bank promptly, report unauthorized activity, and ask what account-specific security steps are needed. |
| Online banking password | Change it through the official service, change reused passwords, and enable two-factor authentication if available. |
| Verification code | Contact the institution through a trusted channel, explain that the code was disclosed, and ask it to secure access. |
| Social Security number or other identity data | Use IdentityTheft.gov and check for unfamiliar credit activity; consider an FTC-described fraud alert. |
What to do next also depends on whether unauthorized activity has already happened, whether you can still access the account, and whether the payment was a card transaction or a transfer you initiated. Tell the institution those details so it can route the report correctly.
