Get out of the water, then wash exposed skin with soap and clean water as soon as possible. Clean and cover any wound, avoid swallowing the water, and change out of contaminated clothing. Brief contact with intact skin does not automatically mean you will become ill, but an open wound, swallowed water, eye exposure, puncture injury, or developing symptoms requires more careful follow-up.
This is general U.S. public-health guidance for floodwater and sewage exposure, not a diagnosis. A particular spill may also contain chemicals, fuel, hazardous waste, sharp debris, or industrial contaminants, so follow instructions from local health and drinking-water authorities.
Immediate steps after contact
Take these actions in order. Do not remain in the water to finish a task or retrieve belongings.
- Leave the contaminated water. Move to a safe area and avoid further contact. Floodwater can hide glass, metal, needles, unstable surfaces, hazardous waste, chemicals, and electrical dangers in addition to sewage.
- Remove contaminated clothing. Handle it as little as possible and keep it away from clean surfaces. Place it in a bag or washable container until it can be laundered.
- Wash exposed skin promptly. Use soap and clean running water. Wash hands, arms, legs, and any other exposed areas before eating, drinking, touching your face, or preparing food.
- Use a fallback only when necessary. If soap and clean water are temporarily unavailable, CDC guidance lists alcohol-based wipes or hand sanitizer for the exposed area. Wash with soap and clean water as soon as they become available; sanitizer is not a substitute for removing visible contamination or for cleaning a wound.
- Deal with wounds separately. Rinse cuts, sores, or rashes with soap and clean water, then cover a clean wound with a waterproof bandage. Keep it out of contaminated water while it is open.
- Launder clothing before reuse. Wash contaminated clothes in hot water with detergent, following the garment’s care instructions. Do not wear them again before washing.
CDC summarizes the safest prevention principle plainly: “The best way to protect yourself is to stay out of the water.”

How much risk does the type of exposure create?
The route of exposure matters more than the fact that the water looked dirty. CDC disaster-cleanup guidance says contact with floodwater on intact skin alone does not pose a serious health risk. That statement is not a guarantee that every spill is harmless: the water’s contents are uncertain, and wounds, ingestion, inhalation of splashes, and physical injuries change the response.
| Exposure | What to do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Intact skin, brief contact | Leave the water and wash with soap and clean water. | Usually a lower-risk route, but sewage may contain germs, chemicals, and debris. Monitor for illness. |
| Open wound, cut, sore, or rash | Wash thoroughly, cover with a waterproof bandage, and avoid additional exposure. | Damaged skin gives germs a route into tissue; infection can develop. |
| Swallowed water | Stop further ingestion and follow local drinking-water instructions. Seek medical advice if symptoms occur. | Ingested contamination can cause diarrheal and other gastrointestinal illness. |
| Eye exposure | Gently flush the eye with safe water. Obtain medical advice if irritation or other symptoms persist. | Contaminated water can irritate the eye; the water may also contain chemicals or particles. |
| Puncture or embedded debris | Arrange prompt professional assessment; do not dig out a deeply embedded object yourself. | Physical injury, retained material, and tetanus risk need an individualized evaluation. |
Always avoid contact with floodwater that may be contaminated with sewage—“it can make you sick!”
If sewage water gets on a cut, sore, or rash
An open wound deserves more attention than contact with unbroken skin. Contaminated water can introduce organisms into damaged tissue, and a puncture can carry contamination deep below the surface.

Clean and protect a minor exposed wound
- Wash your hands with soap and clean water if possible.
- Rinse and wash the wound with soap and clean water. Remove visible dirt gently; do not scrub aggressively into tissue.
- Pat the surrounding skin dry with a clean towel.
- Apply a clean, waterproof bandage. Replace it if it becomes wet or dirty.
- Avoid swimming, wading, or other contact with sewage or floodwater until the wound has closed.
Get care promptly for high-risk injuries
Contact a clinician as soon as possible for a puncture caused by a dirty object, an embedded foreign object, a deep or gaping wound, or an injury in a person whose health makes infection more concerning. Professional cleaning may be needed even when the surface opening looks small.
Seek immediate medical care if an exposed wound becomes red, swollen, increasingly painful, sore, warm, or starts draining or oozing. Fever or rapidly worsening swelling also warrants urgent evaluation. Do not wait for a wound to become severely painful before asking for help.
Tetanus after a sewage-contaminated injury
Ask a health professional whether you need a tetanus booster after a puncture wound or a wound contaminated with feces, soil, or saliva. The recommendation depends on the injury and your vaccination record, including which doses you have previously received and when. There is no safe one-size-fits-all interval to apply without those details, so bring your immunization information if you have it.

A tetanus question is separate from whether the wound needs cleaning, closure, or treatment for a developing infection. Arrange the clinical assessment even if you feel well immediately after the exposure.
If contaminated water entered your mouth
Do not intentionally swallow floodwater or use it for brushing teeth, preparing food, or drinking unless local authorities have confirmed that it is safe. Spit out water that entered your mouth, rinse with safe water if available, and wash your hands before eating or drinking.
There is no universal testing or preventive-medication protocol for every swallowed-water exposure. Follow instructions from local public-health and drinking-water authorities, because a sewage spill can have hazards that differ from ordinary floodwater. Do not use water contaminated with fuel or toxic chemicals for drinking, bathing, or other household purposes; CDC advises following event-specific authorities for those situations.

If water got in your eye
CDC worker guidance for contact with human waste advises gently flushing the eyes with safe water. Remove contact lenses while flushing if they come out easily. Do not use contaminated water for the rinse, and do not force an object out of the eye.
Seek medical advice if pain, redness, blurred vision, light sensitivity, discharge, or irritation continues after flushing, or if you suspect a chemical splash or penetrating injury. Chemical contamination requires advice specific to the substance involved.

Cleaning yourself, your hands, and your clothes
Hands
Wash with soap and clean water after handling sewage, flood debris, contaminated clothing, or cleanup tools. Handwashing is especially important before eating, drinking, preparing food, taking medicine, or touching your face. If safe water is unavailable, use alcohol-based sanitizer temporarily and wash properly as soon as possible.

Clothing and washable gear
Wash contaminated clothing in hot water and detergent before wearing it again. Keep dirty items separate from clean laundry until washed, and clean footwear or reusable protective equipment according to its material and the local cleanup instructions. Disposable items that cannot be safely cleaned should be discarded in accordance with local waste guidance.
Household surfaces
If sewage-contaminated water entered a home, avoid tracking it into clean rooms. Wear appropriate protective equipment for the task and follow local emergency-management or health-department cleanup instructions. Rubber boots, rubber gloves, and goggles can reduce exposure when entry or cleanup is unavoidable, but they do not make the water safe.

Exposure alone does not prove that an infection will occur, and an absence of symptoms does not identify a particular cause. Monitor yourself after the incident and seek medical advice if you become ill. EPA lists upset stomach, intestinal problems, headache, and flu-like discomfort among possible early symptoms after contaminated floodwater exposure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Diarrhea, vomiting, or significant stomach upset
- Abdominal or intestinal problems
- Headache or unusual fatigue
- Fever, chills, or flu-like discomfort
- Increasing redness, swelling, pain, warmth, or drainage at an exposed wound
- Persistent eye irritation or vision changes
Contact a clinician if symptoms develop, worsen, or are severe. Tell them when the exposure occurred, whether water was swallowed, whether a wound was involved, what the water may have contained, and your tetanus history. Do not start antibiotics or other prescription treatment without medical advice.
When a small exposure can be managed with first aid—and when it cannot
| Situation | Reasonable first response | Escalate to professional care when |
|---|---|---|
| Brief splash on intact skin; no symptoms | Leave the area, wash thoroughly, change contaminated clothing, and monitor. | You develop illness symptoms or discover a hidden injury. |
| Small superficial cut that was washed and covered | Keep it clean, dry, and protected; avoid more contaminated water. | Redness, swelling, pain, drainage, fever, or worsening soreness appears. |
| Puncture, deep wound, or embedded object | Cover the area without probing it and arrange assessment. | Seek care promptly; ask about tetanus protection. |
| Water swallowed | Stop ingestion and follow local water-safety instructions. | Diarrhea, vomiting, fever, severe abdominal symptoms, or other illness develops. |
| Eye exposure | Gently flush with safe water. | Pain, persistent redness, vision changes, discharge, or suspected chemical injury occurs. |
Preventing another exposure
The safest choice is not to enter sewage-contaminated water. If authorities say entry is unavoidable, CDC cleanup guidance identifies rubber boots, waterproof gloves, and protective goggles. Cover cuts with waterproof bandages before work, and wash exposed skin and hands immediately afterward. Keep children and other people away from the area while it remains contaminated.
Protective gear limits contact but cannot remove hazards hidden in the water. Do not enter where electrical equipment, unstable structures, fast-moving water, fuel, industrial chemicals, or unknown containers may be present. Follow local emergency instructions instead of attempting cleanup that exceeds your training or equipment.
