After The Ghost in the Portrait, Zero is free and the quest is complete. You can add Zero as a companion, then wait for the next weekly Oogie Boogie quest: Rescue Mission, scheduled for October 14, 2026. The story is not finished yet; this is the third of six stages in the Season of Scares event.
What happens when you finish The Ghost in the Portrait?
The quest ends after you free Zero and confront Oogie Boogie. Its immediate reward is Zero as a companion. The quest is the third stage of the six-week Oogie Boogie storyline, so completing it does not finish the event or unlock the next stage ahead of schedule.
During the quest, you sabotage Oogie Boogie’s Lucky Wheel, gather five Zero Essence from drawings in the Mirror Lair, craft Real Ghostly Paint Thinner, apply it to the Royal Watering Can, and water the correct portrait to free Zero. If you are still working through those steps, the quest objectives list them in sequence. Use the paint thinner from your inventory to upgrade the Watering Can for the portrait.

The next scheduled quest is Rescue Mission, set for October 14, 2026. Disney Dreamlight Valley releases one new challenge each week during the event.

Should you keep the Lucky Wheel Cogs?
Yes. Keep the five Lucky Wheel Cogs you collected during the quest rather than discarding them. They may be needed later, but the available quest information does not confirm their future use.

How long do you have to finish the event?
According to the official announcement, players who begin the first Oogie Boogie quest before November 4, 2026, can complete the remaining quests at their own pace. After November 4, Oogie Boogie leaves the Valley, but players who started the first quest before the cutoff can still finish the questline and unlock him and Zero. If you have not started the storyline, begin it before that date to retain access to the remaining quests.
