Start by confirming exactly what information was exposed, then follow the breach-specific instructions at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach. Change exposed and reused passwords or PINs, use any free monitoring or identity-theft insurance the company offers, and watch the affected accounts and your credit reports. If a Social Security number was exposed, consider a free credit freeze or fraud alert. If you find misuse, contact the business involved and report the identity theft through IdentityTheft.gov.
Start with the breach notice
A breach notification is a starting point, not proof that someone has already used your information. Read the entire notice and make a written record before clicking links or calling numbers in the message.
- Identify the information involved. Look for specific categories such as login credentials, passwords, PINs, Social Security numbers, payment-card details, bank information, or other personal data.
- Note the incident date and notification date. The notice may distinguish when the company discovered the incident from when the exposure occurred.
- Record what the company is doing. Note account resets, replacement cards, investigation updates, or other protective steps.
- Record what the company offers you. The offer may include free credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance, along with an enrollment deadline.
- Save the update instructions. Keep the notice, reference number, and the official page where the company says it will post updates.
Verify an unexpected notice independently. Instead of using a phone number, email address, or link in a suspicious message, open the company’s official website or app yourself and look for its breach information. A genuine notice can still be imitated by a phishing message.

Use the official checklist for your type of exposure
The Federal Trade Commission directs affected consumers to IdentityTheft.gov/databreach. Select the information category that matches the notice and follow the resulting steps. The right response depends on what was exposed; a leaked password calls for different action than an exposed Social Security number.

If the breached company offers free credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance, the FTC advises taking advantage of those services. Review the enrollment terms and deadline in the notice, and use the service even if you have not yet seen suspicious activity.
Match your response to the information exposed

Some notices list several categories. Work through each applicable row rather than assuming one action protects every kind of data.
Change exposed and reused credentials
For a compromised login, change the password and PIN for that account as soon as possible. If you used the same password or PIN on another service, change it there too. Reuse is important because a criminal who obtains one working credential may try it on other sites.

- Open the account through the company’s official website or app, not through a link in an unexpected message.
- Change the password and any account PIN associated with the exposed login.
- Change the same credential anywhere else you used it.
- Save the new credentials securely so you do not accidentally reuse the old ones.
- Check the account for unfamiliar changes or activity after the reset.
If the company says it has already reset your login, still review other services where you used the old password or PIN. A reset at one company does not change credentials elsewhere.
Protect your credit when a Social Security number was exposed
A Social Security number can be used to try to open new credit accounts. The FTC recommends getting and reviewing your credit reports when your number was exposed. Look for accounts, inquiries, balances, or charges that you do not recognize.
Credit freeze
A credit freeze is free. It limits access to your credit report unless you lift or remove the freeze. To place one, contact each of the three nationwide credit bureaus separately. A freeze can help block new-credit applications that depend on access to your report, but it does not replace monitoring existing accounts.

When you apply for credit or another service that requires a credit check, you may need to lift the freeze temporarily. Keep the confirmation details and instructions supplied by each bureau so you can manage the freeze later.

A one-year fraud alert is also free. Contact one nationwide credit bureau; that bureau must notify the other two. The alert asks businesses to take additional steps to verify your identity before extending new credit. It does not block access to your report in the way a freeze does.
Seven-year extended fraud alert
An extended fraud alert lasts seven years. IdentityTheft.gov describes it for people who have experienced identity theft, and it requires an FTC Identity Theft Report. Review the official instructions before choosing this option, because it is intended for a different situation from simply receiving a breach notice.

Choose based on your circumstances. A freeze and a fraud alert are not interchangeable: the freeze restricts report access, while the alert places a verification request on your file.

Use the card issuer’s or bank’s official website, app, or statement telephone number. Tell the institution what the breach notice says was exposed and ask which protective steps it recommends. The appropriate response may depend on whether the information was a card number, account number, online-banking credential, or another detail.

- Review recent and new transactions for unfamiliar activity.
- Follow the institution’s current instructions if you find a transaction you did not authorize.
Official breach guidance emphasizes tailoring the response to the exposed information, but it does not provide one universal payment-card checklist. Your financial institution’s current instructions control the operational steps for its accounts.

If you discover suspected misuse
Do not wait for more evidence once you identify an account, charge, or credit-report entry that is not yours. Start with the business where the fraud occurred.
- Contact the business’s fraud department.
- Ask the business to close or freeze the affected account.
- Change the relevant login, password, or PIN.
- Report the identity theft through IdentityTheft.gov.
- Use the site’s personalized recovery plan for fraudulent accounts, charges, and credit-report entries.
- Keep a dated record of every call, message, case number, document, and promised follow-up.
Continue reviewing the affected accounts and your credit reports after the initial report. A single correction does not establish that every account or report entry is clear.
Set up a practical follow-up routine
Today
- Save the notice and write down the exposed data, incident details, company contact information, and available services.
- Verify the notice through the company’s official website or app if the message was unexpected.
- Change exposed and reused passwords and PINs.
- Enroll in any free monitoring or identity-theft insurance offered by the company.
During the next account and statement cycles
- Review the affected account for unfamiliar logins, profile changes, charges, or transfers.
- Review payment statements and bank activity when financial information may have been exposed.
- Review credit reports when a Social Security number was involved.
- Record anything suspicious and the action you took.
When the company posts an update
- Compare the new information with your original notice.
- Check whether the list of exposed data, service terms, or enrollment deadline changed.
- Follow the new official instructions rather than relying on an old message.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the contact details in a suspicious message. Verify through the company’s official site or app first.
- Changing only one password. Reused credentials must be changed on every account where they appeared.
- Assuming a monitoring service prevents fraud. Monitoring can alert you to activity; it does not replace account reviews or credit protections.
- Treating a freeze and fraud alert as the same. A freeze limits report access; an alert asks businesses to verify identity.
- Ignoring a notice because no fraud is visible. Take the protective steps even when the breach has not produced an obvious loss.
- Failing to keep records. A dated contact log makes it easier to track disputes, closures, and follow-ups.
