If you receive a bank data-breach notice—or suspect your banking information was exposed—contact your bank through a trusted channel, find out exactly what data was involved, secure affected accounts, and report any unfamiliar transaction immediately. A breach does not necessarily mean your login details or account were accessed, but acting quickly can reduce risk and preserve your options if money is missing.
What should I do after a bank data breach?
- Verify the notice independently. Do not click a link or call a number in an unexpected message. Use the phone number on your bank statement or payment card, or type the bank’s known website address yourself. Ask what information was exposed, when it happened, and what steps the bank recommends for your specific account. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) advises contacting your financial institution after a breach notice (CFPB guidance on sharing financial data).
- Change exposed or reused passwords. Change the password for the affected service on its official site. If you used that password for online banking or another financial account, change it there as well. Use a separate, strong password for each financial account. Turn on multifactor authentication and account alerts if your bank offers them.
- Check transactions and statements. Review recent activity in online or mobile banking and read paper statements. Look for unfamiliar merchants, withdrawals, or small transactions that could be tests. Keep checking after the initial response: suspicious activity can surface months after information is stolen (CFPB advice on hacked card data).
- Report anything you do not recognize right away. Call the bank or card issuer using a trusted number. Ask how to submit written follow-up and whether a card should be canceled and replaced. Keep copies of messages and letters, transaction details, dates, names, and case or reference numbers.
- Do not follow instructions from an unexpected caller or texter. Never share a verification code or move money to a so-called safe account. Hang up and contact the bank yourself using the number on your card or statement.
How do I protect my bank account after my information was exposed?
The right next step depends on what was exposed. A leaked password calls for credential changes; exposed card details may call for a replacement card; exposed account or identity information warrants asking the bank what additional monitoring or protections it recommends. A notice alone does not establish that someone accessed your account or that every type of information was included, so ask the institution for the specifics rather than assuming the worst—or that no action is needed.
| Information or activity | Practical next step | Who to contact |
|---|---|---|
| Online banking password, or a password reused for banking | Change it on the official service; replace the same password anywhere else it was reused. | The affected service and your bank, using a trusted contact method. |
| Payment-card information | Review card activity and ask whether the card should be canceled and replaced. | Card issuer or bank. |
| Account number or other financial data | Ask what account-specific precautions are available; monitor transactions and statements. | Your bank or credit union. |
| Unfamiliar electronic debit, card charge, check, or transfer | Report it promptly and ask which dispute process and deadlines apply to that transaction. | The bank, card issuer, or institution that handled the transaction. |
How do I report an unauthorized bank transaction?
Contact the bank or card provider as soon as you spot an unfamiliar transaction. Use its trusted phone number or official website, clearly say that you did not authorize the transaction, and ask how to file a formal error notice. Follow up in writing if the institution instructs you to do so, and save a copy. Record the date and time you reported it, the person or department you spoke with, the transaction details, and any case number.

For certain electronic fund transfers, federal protections and liability rules depend on how the transaction occurred and when you notify the bank. CFPB guidance says that if an unauthorized withdrawal appears on a statement and your debit card or other access device was not lost or stolen, you should notify the bank within 60 days after the statement was made available. If a card or PIN was lost or stolen, reporting within two business days after you learn of the loss can affect the liability limit. These are not universal deadlines for every kind of fraud claim; report immediately and ask which rule applies to your circumstances (CFPB card-data guidance; CFPB unauthorized-transaction guidance).

- SIMPLE TO USE: Just remove the cover and swipe. The wide swipe makes it easy to cover sensitive information.
- VERSATILE APPLICATION: Ideal for a variety of documents, including contracts, court documents, shipping labels, tax returns and more.
- LONG-LASTING INK: The high-quality ink works on both glossy and standard paper and provides up to 330 feet of coverage.
For an electronic-transfer error notice covered by the CFPB’s guidance, a bank or credit union generally has 10 business days to investigate. If it determines an error occurred, it must correct it within one business day and has three business days to report its findings. This is the general error-resolution process for a covered claim, not a guarantee that every fraud report will be resolved on the same schedule (CFPB error-resolution guidance).
Checks: the processing method can affect your rights
Report an unauthorized check to your bank promptly. A check processed as an electronic transfer may have additional federal protections; a check not processed electronically may instead be covered by state law. Ask the bank how the check was processed and which rules apply (CFPB guidance on unauthorized checks).

Will the bank refund money stolen from my account?
There is no single answer for every disputed transaction. The outcome can depend on the payment method, how the transaction happened, when you notified the institution, and the facts of the claim. Report the loss promptly, ask the bank which error-resolution process applies, and keep the records of your report and follow-up. For covered electronic-transfer errors, the CFPB describes the investigation and correction process above; it does not make that timeline a promise of a refund in every case.

Scammers may pose as bank fraud investigators and claim that your account is at risk. A request for a verification code or an instruction to transfer money to protect it is a warning sign. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says, “Never share a verification code. Ever.” End the call or conversation and contact your institution independently; do not use a caller-provided callback number (FTC warning about bank-fraud calls).
