If liquid may have reached your computer’s motherboard, stop using the device and disconnect external power when it is safe to do so. Do not turn it back on just because the outside looks dry: evaporation does not remove residue, and internal damage can remain. A repair professional can assess whether cleaning, component-level repair, or replacement is appropriate.
What liquid can do to a motherboard
While a device is powered, conductive liquid can create unintended electrical paths and cause short circuits. After the liquid evaporates, residue may remain on the board. Sugary drinks can leave solids, and acidic drinks such as juice or soft drinks can contribute to faster, more severe corrosion, according to iFixit’s laptop liquid-damage guide. These are general risks, not a prediction of what will happen to a particular computer.
Possible evidence includes water stains, oxidation, rust, or corrosion. ASUS lists these among examples of liquid-related motherboard damage; a damaged trace or detached component can also occur, but those conditions are not inevitable results of every spill. - Put personal safety first. Do not handle a soaked or submerged device while standing in conductive liquid or while you are wet. Do not put yourself at risk to retrieve it. iFixit’s repair guidance emphasizes safety before device recovery.
- Turn it off if you can do so safely. Disconnect the charger and other external power sources. Lenovo’s product safety guidance says to stop using a product and unplug it when safety concerns arise.
- Do not disconnect an internal battery unless you know how to do so safely. Battery access and disconnection vary by model. If you are unsure, leave the device unpowered and arrange service rather than opening it.
- Keep it disconnected. Do not reconnect power to test it simply because the casing seems dry or the computer appears to have recovered. Visual dryness does not establish that the motherboard is dry or free of residue.
- Arrange an assessment if internal exposure is possible. This is particularly important if the device malfunctions, liquid reached openings, or you see signs of corrosion. Do not rely on rice or desiccants to remove contamination; they do not clean spill residue, as iFixit explains.
Why drying alone may not make it safe
Drying addresses moisture, not contamination. Liquid can leave deposits behind as it evaporates, and those deposits may continue to affect contacts or contribute to corrosion. A device that starts after a spill is not thereby confirmed safe or repaired. Manufacturer safety guidance and general repair guidance do not treat a dry exterior as proof that internal electronics are safe to power.

Can a liquid-damaged motherboard be repaired?
Sometimes. The answer depends on what liquid was spilled, whether it reached the board, which areas and components were affected, how much residue or corrosion is present, the device’s construction, and whether suitable repair procedures and parts are available. An experienced repairer may clean the board, diagnose faults, repair components, or recommend board or whole-unit replacement. There is no reliable universal repair success rate or standard price for this work.
Cleaning and board repair are not the same as wiping down an assembled computer. General laptop repair guidance from iFixit describes removing affected components, cleaning residue and corrosion, drying the cleaning fluid, inspecting connectors, and reassembling. That guidance is not a procedure validated for every motherboard, coating, battery design, or spill.

When to use a qualified repair service
- Liquid may have reached the motherboard or other internal components.
- The affected areas are difficult to access, or the computer has visible corrosion or damaged components.
- The device behaves abnormally after the spill.
- You cannot safely isolate power or do not have the experience and model-specific instructions needed for disassembly.
A technician can inspect the device and explain whether cleaning, component repair, or replacement is viable. Ask for the diagnosis and total quoted cost before authorizing work; the sources do not establish a universal price range.

For experienced repairers, iFixit names high-concentration isopropyl alcohol, ideally 90% or higher, or distilled or deionized water as possible cleaning fluids. It also describes using a soft-bristle brush or precision cleaning kit to address debris and corrosion deposits. The guide cautions against solvents such as ketone, acetone, and naphtha, and warns that careless brushing can damage or dislodge components.

These materials are not instructions to pour or spray fluid onto an assembled motherboard. Choosing a cleaning method, removing power safely, protecting components, and confirming that the board is dry all require appropriate experience and device-specific procedures.

- ASUS: Its US motherboard guidance, last updated March 24, 2026, lists liquid intrusion, water stains, oxidation, rust, and corrosion as customer-induced damage examples. ASUS says authorized service centers may offer customer-induced-damage part replacement; when requested, both parts and labor are charged. See ASUS’s criteria and service statement.
- Dell: Its US base-support exclusions, last modified May 18, 2026, include motherboard corrosion from a liquid spill. A separate accidental-damage policy or another support entitlement may change the outcome. Confirm the terms for your model and plan with Dell Support.
- Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3: Microsoft’s model-specific service guide says a liquid damage indicator color other than white indicates liquid entry and that a device with that indicator requires whole-unit replacement. This rule applies to the Surface Laptop Go 3 documentation, not computers generally. See Microsoft’s service guide.
Before choosing a repair, compare the technician’s diagnosis and quote with any available manufacturer or accidental-damage coverage. A policy for one manufacturer or model does not establish what another provider will cover.
