If your feet hurt after walking, stop or reduce the activity that brings on the pain, rest and raise the foot, and use a towel-wrapped ice pack for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours. Wear roomy shoes with a low heel and soft sole. Get urgent medical help for severe pain, inability to walk, a foot that has changed shape, a hot swollen foot, or a snap or grinding sound after an injury. Pain location can offer clues, but it cannot confirm the cause.
What to do about foot pain after walking
If the pain is mild and there are no signs of a serious injury, try these short-term steps:
- Stop the activity that provokes the pain. Avoid sports and reduce long periods of standing or walking while the foot is sore. Do not try to walk through pain.
- Rest and raise the foot when you can.
- Apply wrapped ice. Place an ice pack inside a towel and use it for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours.
- Choose comfortable footwear. Look for room for your toes, a low heel and a soft sole. Soft insoles or pads are an optional comfort measure, not a treatment that works for every cause.
- Consider gentle foot or ankle stretches only if they do not cause pain and a significant injury is not suspected.
NHS guidance lists paracetamol and ibuprofen gel or tablets as possible options. These medicines are not suitable for everyone; ask a pharmacist or clinician if you are unsure what is safe for you.

What the pain location may suggest
Location and timing can help describe a problem to a health professional, but they do not diagnose it. The NHS advises: “Do not try to diagnose the cause of pain yourself.”
Heel or arch
Sharp pain between the heel and arch that is worst with the first steps after sleep or rest, eases as you move, then worsens after prolonged standing or walking can fit a plantar fasciitis pattern. Pain at the back of the heel with ankle or calf pain may be associated with Achilles tendonitis. Sudden severe heel pain, swelling, a pop or snap, or difficulty walking needs prompt assessment because a more serious injury may be involved.

Bottom of the foot or ball of the foot
Possible explanations include a sprain after intense or repetitive exercise, Morton’s neuroma—which may cause burning or shooting pain near the toes or a feeling like a small stone underfoot—bursitis, bunions, skin problems or plantar fasciitis. This list is not exhaustive.
Top of the foot
Pain on top of the foot may be associated with exercise, tight footwear, a sprain or strain, fracture, tendonitis, osteoarthritis, gout or referred nerve pain. Red, hot, swollen skin with severe tenderness warrants urgent assessment.

Pain after a sudden increase in activity
A rapid increase in walking or other activity can contribute to a bone stress injury. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says stress-fracture discomfort may initially appear only near the end of activity and last a short time afterward. Poorly cushioned or worn footwear may increase risk. Persistent or worsening focal pain deserves caution; this pattern alone does not establish a fracture.

NHS guidance advises seeking help if foot pain has not improved after two weeks of home care. Do not wait for that threshold if symptoms are severe, worsening quickly or otherwise concerning.
If you have diabetes and foot pain, seek professional advice: foot problems may be more serious. Care routes differ by country, so use the appropriate local health service.
