Compare the specific health plans available to you—not Elevance Health and another insurer as brands. Start with estimated yearly spending, then verify doctors and hospitals, prescription coverage, plan rules, and eligibility. Elevance Health offers coverage through affiliated companies, including Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Wellpoint, but that does not mean a particular plan is offered in your area or suits your needs.
What should I compare when choosing a health insurance plan?
Use the same checklist for every candidate plan, including plans from Elevance-affiliated companies and competing insurers. A useful comparison is based on the plan’s documents and network for the coverage year you are considering—not on the insurer’s name alone.
- Estimated annual premium and likely out-of-pocket costs
- Doctors, hospitals, network limits, and referral rules
- Coverage and cost-sharing for expected care and medicines
- Plan quality information, considered separately from price tier
- Availability and eligibility where you live
How do I compare health insurance costs beyond the premium?
Estimate the annual premium plus the cost-sharing you are likely to owe for care. HealthCare.gov recommends considering estimated yearly costs, not just the monthly premium: Your total costs for health care.

| Cost item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Premium | The amount you pay for coverage, usually monthly. Multiply by 12 for an annual comparison. |
| Deductible | What you may need to pay for covered services before the plan begins paying its share, subject to the plan’s terms. |
| Copayments and coinsurance | Your share for common services, such as office visits, tests, or prescriptions. |
| Out-of-pocket maximum | The plan’s stated cap on your out-of-pocket costs for covered care under its rules; check what expenses count and what is excluded. |
Model the care your household expects to use, including recurring prescriptions and likely appointments. A plan with a lower premium can still cost more overall if its deductible or cost-sharing is higher for the care you need. Your actual spending depends on the services used and the plan’s terms.

Are my doctor and prescriptions covered by this plan?
Check the exact provider network
Search each preferred doctor, clinic, and hospital in the provider directory for the specific plan and coverage year. A provider’s participation in one plan from an insurer does not establish participation in another plan from the same insurer. Review how the plan treats out-of-network care and whether it requires referrals to see specialists. HealthCare.gov explains how network rules differ among plan types: Health insurance plan and network types.
Verify medicines and expected services
Use the plan’s covered-drug list to check each regular prescription, including its tier and cost-sharing. Read the plan brochure and Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC) for services you expect to use. The SBC is designed to provide an easy-to-read way to compare coverage and costs: Summary of Benefits and Coverage. HealthCare.gov also lists key considerations before choosing a plan: 3 things to know before you pick a health insurance plan.

How do plan types and metal tiers affect the comparison?
HMO, PPO, POS, and EPO plans can differ in their network boundaries, out-of-network coverage, and referral requirements. Compare the actual rules in each plan rather than assuming that the same plan type works identically across insurers.

Is Elevance Health the same as Anthem?
No. Elevance Health is the company; Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Wellpoint are among the affiliated plan brands or groups it identifies. Elevance says its affiliates offer commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid coverage, and its company overview identifies Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield affiliated plans in 14 states. That 14-state figure refers to the states where Elevance says those Anthem-affiliated blue plans are offered; it is not a complete measure of Elevance’s overall market footprint. It also does not show that a particular product is available in your ZIP code. See Elevance Health’s overview of its companies for its description of the affiliations.
Brand names and products are not interchangeable across every market. Compare the local plan documents and provider directory for the specific product you could enroll in.

How do location, eligibility, and enrollment timing affect your options?
Plan availability depends on where you live, the coverage category, and the plan year. HealthCare.gov’s plan preview asks for location and household information to show relevant options and prices: Health insurance plans and prices.
As of October 7, 2026, HealthCare.gov says that enrollment for 2026 coverage outside the annual Open Enrollment period generally requires a qualifying life change or eligibility for Medicaid or CHIP. It also says Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage begins November 1, 2026. Confirm current dates and eligibility on HealthCare.gov when you are ready to enroll, since timing rules and available options depend on your circumstances.

A practical plan-by-plan comparison
- Gather the candidates. Use the official comparison tool for your location and coverage category to identify plans available for the relevant year.
- Compare yearly costs. Record each plan’s annual premium, deductible, common copays or coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum. Estimate likely use rather than comparing premiums alone.
- Check providers and rules. Look up your doctors and facilities in each exact plan directory, then review out-of-network terms and specialist referral requirements.
- Check medicines and services. Search the covered-drug list and read the SBC or brochure for recurring prescriptions and care you expect to need.
- Consider quality separately. Do not infer care quality from the Marketplace metal tier. Use comparable plan-level quality evidence if it is available for your candidates.
- Confirm eligibility and availability. Verify that the plan is offered in your area and that you can enroll during the applicable period or through a qualifying circumstance.
For each item, rely on documents for the same plan and year. If you cannot verify a doctor, medicine, benefit, or rule in the plan materials, contact the insurer or plan administrator before enrolling.
What can—and cannot—be concluded about Elevance versus competitors
Without a location, coverage category, expected care, and current plan documents, it is not possible to identify which Elevance-affiliated or competing plan is available to you, compare local prices, or rank insurers on quality or service. The decision is plan-specific: compare the options you can actually enroll in and the costs and coverage relevant to your household.
